Yeah going back to the beginnings of airsoft in Japan back in the 70's there have been electric airsoft pistols that run on standard batteries in the grip.
Low powered and usually more toy feeling, but originally airsoft was just a way to practice shooting sports indoors since firearm ownership is very restrictive and I don't think they can even own airguns.

Technically they still are.
There's a spring powered piston inside that pushes a blast of air...and with an electric airsoft gun a motor turns a gearbox that draws the piston back then releases it.
There's only been one pneumatic airsoft gun that I'm aware of though.
Otherwise it's a spring position that may or may not be manually operated, co2, HPA, or green / red gas which are propane with oil adetives.
