Guns Shop discussion

My house is awash in Chinese made stuff. My issue with knives is the sadness I feel when a cultural icon is outsourced. I would hate to own a Russian made Mora, a Slovakian Victorinox or a Spanish Opinel. I don't have strong opinions about Buck taking their tacticals off shore, but that's because I'm dismissive of tacticals. I see them as ubiquitous knives of the world, made every where by every body with little to distinguish them other than steal specifications. I couldn't care less where somebody's tactical was made.

But seeing classic American patterns made else where makes me sad. I want a Buck canoe. But I'll wait till they make them in the US.

Regarding the off shoring as attributed to greed, well sort of. This sort of greed is baked into our system and it's why my house, like many of yours, has so much pacific rim goods in your homes. Our system doesnt value domestic jobs or much of anything other than growing GDP. Suggest googling for the article, "If the GDP is Up, Why is America Down?"

I for one am glad Buck is still alive. Don't get me started about the Taylor Brand Old Timers though.

Ok, just so we understand that your China boycott is restricted to knives.

:)

No I started with Hand Tools, Guns, Knives, Kitchen Pots/Pans/Knives, PM's, Food, and anything I plan on leaving the kids/grandkids. All electronics stuff is just junk to me overall. I do not chase the high-tech debt craze. This stuff is junk in 5-years. I invest in the best of the stuff above that will last multi-generations. Maybe that's one reason my family does quite well when many seem to be so deep in debt.:D This is just me.

afghanwarrior;you are so right.I started out a Buck man 38 yrs ago untill they outsourced to china when that happened I switched to Case because of there promise to allways be American,NOW that Case won't build a factory in the USA for there tactical line I have NO faith in them so I am buying Bucks again.I was allways a Schrade lover untill they shut down. And the same goes for tools, cars, trucks, watches (we look like we lost that fight along with electronics))LISTEN I'M A HARD WORKING ELECTRICIAN I am sick and tired of us losing this fight with politicians and foreign SWEAT shops:grumpy:REMEMBER-Buy AMERICAN the job YOU save may be your own:cool:PS.I know your going to say Buck is outsourcing to china but BUCK says they are pulling operations back to th USA and I'm going to support them in their effort...

Yes, Buck has an import line but I challenge you to name one single Buck knife where USA production was dropped and moved to China. A distinction everyone seems to overlook in this discussion. What formerly USA Buck knife did you want that was moved to China?.....:o

That is not my issue. I just say I will only buy the Buck knives made in the USA.

The best we can do is buy American and help the folks at home. Just about everything in Wal Mart is imported from China and if ya take a good look, we've let it happen ever so gradually we didn't see it coming and now our product choices are becoming fewer.
A couple of years ago I made a real fool of myself when I bought tires from a major chain. Several days later I was cleaning the car and looked at the fine imprint on the rubber -- Made in China. I was furious and can only blame myself for an expensive careless act. Keep with the American brand knives in your pocket at all times because it is the right thing to do.

I work at a gun shop that sells knives and Im amazed how many people want "cheap knives" By that i mean $10 and under. I dont carry really high end, Becker, Esee, Benchmade, Buck, TOPS ZT, Spyderco, CRKT, SAK, Kershaw, Mora, and a couple Hogue knives, nice stuff but nothing outrageous. It shocks me how many people want a knife and then ask if we have anything under $10 or so.

Some years ago I purchased a new John Deere tractor. ( yes, I knew the diesel engine was Japanese) They had a rebate for implements and I went ahead and got the John Deere brand rotary cutter also. Assumed that at double the price it was a USA made cutter. One day when greasing the PTO I noticed the tag on the gearbox....made in China......sob. Just to keep this on topic, I want to say I'm sure I had a Buck knife in my pocket, probably a 422 at that time.
