I'm curious to how everyone carries their pistols that they take into the wilderness? How easy is it to access, what type of holster, how concealable is it, on your person or in your bag?

Pictures appreciated!

Right now I carry a Glock 29 in the dreaded fanny pack holster. Painfully obvious? Yes. but I can get to it in a hurry, and it is somewhat "concealed". I'm planning to move up to a Chest Raider by Robert H in the near future. Seems it would carry better than something on the waist, especially when wearing a pack.

Cross-draw or shoulder rig if it's a larger caliber revolver.

KyTac BraveHeart IWB for the Glock 20 if being discreet.

For normal hiking, I carry my regular EDC and CZ-75D PCR 9MM, very serious treks in the Rockies its either a Ruger GP100 4 inch .357 Mag or a Ruger Blackhawk 4 inch .44 Mag.

I don't own a gun . . . yet. I've got a Ruger 22/45 Mk III in layaway that I'll be getting out in a couple of weeks and I'll be ordering a Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack to carry it and a bunch of other gear in. I don't hike anywhere where there are large animals I'll have to worry about. The .22 isn't so hot as a defensive round against predators of the 2 legged variety but it's better than nothing. My next gun will be either a Ruger GP100 or a little snubby Smith and Wesson .357 or .38 special that I can carry in a cargo pocket for easy access. Whichever one of those I don't get as my second gun will be my third. I decided to start with the .22 so I can practice as much as I want without breaking the bank buying ammo. It should also serve alright as a means to bag squirrels or rabbits or other small game should the need or desire arise.

As I have hiked so many years w/o seeing anything or having any problem I'm down to a .22 mag Mini Master in my pocket for backpacking. For hiking usually nothing. I pretty much feel safe most of the places I go.

take your pick.

glock 17 strong side in don hume leather

springfield xd9subcom in dm bullard iwb

colt 1991a1 in Andys Leather House iwb

Ruger single six in strong side low ride quick draw name i forget

taurus 85 .38 in iwb uncle mike and don hume cross draw.

I carry a gun to enrich my outdoors experience (just because I like them) as much as anything else. I tend to be in the woods more during hunting seasons, so then I'll be carrying whatever's appropriate to the game I'm after. Usually shotgun or rifle. For general woods loafing (not "hiking") I usually carry a rifle, but occasionally just grab a pistol. Open carry.

Sometimes I carry a .22 on a belt or throw the .38 in a pocket.

A simple .22 caliber 9shot revolver w/6" barrel...have not need it yet , started out packing a .357 but after a few trips never needed it either and weight being a issue I am down to the 22.

I carry a Browning Buckmark 5.5" .22lr in a buffalo hide flap holster that I had specially made-up. Carry an additional mag (in the flap holster) plus 100-200 rounds of ammo.

If I'm in an unknown area, I've been know to bring either my SW 586 .357mag or one of my M1911s. Mostly loaded for 2-legged critters.

I've been known to carry an 1858 Remington reproduction in a leather belt holster while squirrel hunting. :D

Usually just my XD in a C-TAC, and usually because it's already there anyways.

I've been a LEO for 17 years and the last 10 I've had to carry concealed on the job in just about every environment you can think of around the world. It can be a challenge, to say the least, to find a rig that is right for everything. I continually looked for something that met these critera:

1. A safe and secure rig. As a rangemaster and firearms instructor, this was paramount to me.

2. Something that didn't telegraph that I was carrying a concealed weapon or that I was a LEO.

3. A rig that protected my firearm from the elements, but still allowed reasonably quick access to it.

I found out quickly, after trying many of them, that fanny packs met none of these. What I did find that worked reasonably well was the Wilderness Safepacker. It works great for me with a little practice and performs well off duty as well when I am out in the field, plus it has a lot of carry options and accessories (it can go on you or your pack/bag). You might give them a look. If you read at the middle of the product page, you'll see why it was designed. I hope this is of help to you!

Thanks for that link ejis! I'm gonna have to give one of those a try. Looks like a perfect solution for carrying while backpacking.

Good for you! Smartest thing you could do!

Thanks L.W. I owe the choice at least in part to the advice I got from this forum. You chimed in on that thread with some good advice about sights. You also recommended a revolver but I didn't much care for any of the .22 revolvers that I looked at so I went with the Ruger Mk III. Like I said, the revolvers will come later. I'm also planning on attending a full day handgun safety/shooting class the same weekend that I get the gun out of layaway. I'm pretty excited about the whole thing. :D
