How many of you have this knife? I know it's applications can be a controversial topic at times..but I'm fairly new here so I don't know too much better...I was wondering just how effective this knife can be for me without getting real-life physical instruction? Just how far can the books and videos really take you? I'm very interested in this knife and it's applications and am just beginning to learn more about it.

I know this topic can get pretty broad but this is where I thought I would begin. I was just telling my friend today about it and all the potential things that it can do...but I'd like to think that eventually I'd actually be able to use it to that potential.

Are there any websites out there that would aid me in this?

Edited for grammar

I have owned a Gunting for a few months now, and have watched some training tapes ( a training tape) on it, and feel that I am fully...errrr...well...unqualified to give an intelligent answer to your question, but what the heck...I'll try anyways.

I agree, that it's applications are a little on the controversial side, but the more you consider the knife, and learn about it the more thought you realize is behind the design. Basically, I do like the idea of a list of options that exceed the potential of bare fists, without automatically resorting to a lethal blade.

As far as the books and videos, coming from a neophyte kinda person myself they aint for the faint of heart or simple of mind. The video I've seen on it was Bram's Tactical Folders which he barely introduced the design (it was actually the REKAT escelator at the time) and it didn't take very long before I was scratchin' my head and goin' "huh?" Call me simpleminded if ya' must, but I had a hell of a time assimilating things. I do keep trying and have pretty well worn the rewind button off my VCR. Could be that some of the drills and such are simpler in other videos, but from what I've heard I wouldn't hold my breath on that...

I've learned the most basic concepts of strikes, openings as well as a joint lock or two, but to REALLY learn your way around this knife I feel you have GOT TO turn off the TV, git outta the chair, and find a partner that's willing to work with you and absorb some of the nasty strikes, locks, openings, etc. no matter how gentle you and a partner are, I do fully believe you are going to increase your knowledge in the application and absorbing of many, many forms of noxious stimuli. ie: you will get boo-boo's.

the use of ANY knife is better explored in a pragmatic fashion as opposed to a philisophical one, but it seems to me training with this knife is much, much...stronger in the necessity of hands on training with a partner.

The books and videos can get ya' into the basic concepts. but if you truly desire to "use this knife to it's potential" I think you'd be best off attending one of Bram's seminars. that's what I'm gonna do when I happen to have time off work AND some money to spend.

As far as websites that come to my widdle mind, I think this one and the MBC forum over at Spyderco are as good as you're gonna get in relation to this knife, it's pretty darn cool to get input straight from the knifes designer and manufacturer ya' know...

Some things that I like about this knife off hand are actually it's handle to blade ratio. I got really big forepaws, and it's nice to have a politically correct three inch blade in that size of a handle. I also like how high it carries in the pocket, and the way it was designed to easily go into a reverse grip. incidentally it makes one heckuva of an EDC, knock around utility kinda knife as well. Which happens to be a good thing since I happen to spend 100% of my knife time opening mail, cutting fruit, cord, and a million other mundane tasks. One of the more interesting places I carry my Gunting is when I'm on shift for EMS. It's a nice bit of protection sometimes for us folks what don't have badges and guns but nonetheless get in the occassional stressful situation, and I also figured out the horn on top of the blade could easily be used as a glass breaker in a pinch, if not the butt of the handle itself.

Anyhoo, it's about 0215 here, and I really need to quit runnin' off at the mouth and get some rest. Hope this holds ya' over until BRAM and some of the more knowledgeable folks can poke there heads in an' give ya' a better scoop.

Thanks for all that info. That helps a ton to hear of other people's firsthand experience with the knife.

A point you brought up which I forgot to post in my original post was that of the blade for utility uses. I'm glad it can be used for that as well. Just from what I've seen I thought it may have been too awkward for that kind of thing.

Thanks again for your informative post!

Hi.
thanks for all the kind words..
yes the Gunting is a new type of tool and because of that it invokes strong response..Of course so did the Glock...
yes my older series of tapes showed some tactical folding knife with a bit-o-taste of the first kinetic knife I designed ...
With the advent of the Gunting I actually made a new set of "learn from the tapes" series on Gunting..The first series of 3 tapes plus an intro tape was to generally explore what a Gunting was/is and general ways to apply it..pressure point, slam n jam & application of control...
Several "agencies" asked couldn't I make a learn directly from the tape series...sooooo that's what I did with Video Quest..
The Second Series of 3 tapes plus the intro tape is a 'step by step' "how to" called the Instructor Series...it personally instructs one on how to use the Gunting..Lots of slow mo and close ups..all done digitally...
It was just completed a couple of months ago!
both can be gotten from Video Quest @ 1-800-340-9664
www.videos4selfdefense.com or at [url]www.trainingblades.com from Edges2 Training Blades site

Several Governments agencies are using the tapes to supplement when I'm not actually there teaching...here and abroad..
The Second series is a true teaching set of tapes...

Get a DRone..really..no use training without a safe training tool..and it doubles as an impact tool..

Please feel free to email me or ask more questions..
I do have Gunting Instructors in Vancouver..

Thank you so much Bram...the info thats available both with the search function and from posting current threads always amazes me...

Its also a real joy to know that Vancouver has Gunting Instructors...

One of which I'm guessing would be Steve2295...

BOK,
I'm "one" of Bram's people but I may be able to help! When you first P/U the G she's a little strange. The G looks like no folder you have ever seen, you begin asking yourself, whats that thing(ramp)there for, what are those serrations for,why is the handle "made that way etc.!You want answers so you get the tapes, you sit & watch, answers come(yes you can & do learn from the tapes, best I've ever seen),yes you try "some" stuff on "friends'!Then you want more, you begin looking for instuctors, you ask Bram, where can I get more??If you are lucky, you take a siminar from Bram(the #1 Guy)! If not, his instructors(people he has personally trained)Instrustors like,Jody(a beautiful Lady),Tony,Vince,Andy,Steve(up North) or others all are qualified & are very good! The $$ you spend on Bram's Tapes ,Drone & live blade are well worth it in "my"opinion!!

BOK,

Drop me a line if you like. We'll play with the "G". Nothing better out there in a Tac-folder, IMHO. I may have to convince Bram to have another Vancouver seminar soon. Or, better yet, we can head (further) up North to see "Runs with Scissors". :)

See Bram, ya should've gone to ASLET in Alaska too. :D

Thanks Steve..

There's three of us that have it on order right now. When our shipment comes in I'll be sure to contact you.

Hey BOK,
I'm in Vancouver as well. If I read correctly ur at the House of Knives. You've probably run into Steve already as he likes his toys with an edge. Anyway, I have had instruction from both Bram and Steve at a number of Seminars. The G's a great little tool. If we're lucky we'll see Bram in Vancouver once again.
Stay sharp.

Vapor

I remember talking to Steve a long time ago at the PC HOK...he was carrying the drone that day...that was the first I had seen or really heard anything about the Gunting...

I'm pleased to know that I have so many resources for info and instruction on this knife in Vancouver...

BOK,

COOL! I wasn't sure where you were in Canada. The fact that you are in the Lower Mainland is pretty cool.

You will not be disappointed with the "G", but the important question is, "Did you get the red one?" :D

You need a drone to train. People quickly discover that MBC isn't much fun without a drone. You can't train with the live blade. The drone, on the other hand, gets banged, kin-op'ed, flipped, twirled, etc., all day long. In Israel, Bram asked all of us if anyone had a live blade for a magazine photograph. He had to laugh, as all his instructors/students were all carrying either red or blue. :D

Definitely drop me a line when you get the "G's". With more and more people up here interested in the Gunting we should easily be able to have another seminar up here with Bram.

BTW, I still have the website, but never seem to find the time to update/upgrade. Guess I'll have to buckle down on my next series of days off.

Eraser/Secret Squirrel/Vapor, give me a call when you get a day off, will ya? ;)

L8r,

Steve

It's the live blade that is on order right now however the order is only going out in August so I will have some time to save up and get that drone.

Also I hope to see you 'round sometime again...'cos I'd like to see that sheath of yours too...

This knife and it's accessories man!! My friend is gonna be pissed at me...the deal we got on the knife was great but all this other stuff is gonna push my Visa to it's limits pretty soon :D

*covers my ears* stop taunting me!!!! */covers my ears*
As if I don't have enough spydercos that I'm drooling for, I now want to get a Gunting too! But that would take a long long time. :(

I've been lurking there a bit the past few days or so.

There's a lot of good reading all over the place. There was a good thread at selfedefenseforums.com about the G. I know you're a moderator there...nice!

jim - don't worry about that...I've heard so many stories about people cutting their legs and thighs...I'll be sure NOT to follow in those footsteps with the live blade...

Bok,
You are in for so much fun, you have no idea! One suggestion, break out the liniment!LOL! Don't worry about being able to learn, I'm an old guy(58),if I can learn anyone can!!Course it takes me a little longer to comprehind!!
jim:D

BOK,

Are you registered at SDF.com? We need more Canadians there. Drop in and say, "Hi". :) That goes for you too, Calyth.

The Edges2 Trainers are reasonably priced. If you want any of the holsters, just let me know. I'll put in an order with Frank at Skunkworks. SKUCONSOL@aol.com if you want to contact him yourself. Frank is a great blade instructor, but he is a true Master with kydex.

L8r,

Not registered yet. I'm sort of just listening in for now and taking in some of the info over there. At this point I don't think I have too much to contribute. Feel kinda like the self-defense 'virgin'or something:D

Where can I get those edges2 trainers?
Sorry for all these newbie, dumbass questions...
