Gunting again...

Hey, Everyone was a newbie at some point. Feel free to jump in anytime. All contributions are valuable and can spark offshoot threads. There are always others that have similar questions to you, so why not ask and get answers that everyone can benefit from?

Edges2 is at: http://www.trainingblades.com/

If you want to see a couple of samples in person, drop me an email. We can meet for a coffee or something.

Thats great Steve...thanks...will keep that in mind..

I notice only the fixed versions (fixed closed and fixed open) at their site. Might it benefit me more just to pay the money and get the folding version from Spyderco?

The Spydie drone is the best available anywhere. Definitely the Cadillac of training drones, but the Edges2 fixed open/closed blades are a lot less harsh on your partners body during hard slam n' jam stuff (although Jim may disagree :)). Get the drone if you can afford it. They are worth every penny.

I usually have at least 2-3 sets of the edges2 versions for students to train with anyway.

Like BOK, I just ordered the gunting. Hearing all this about people getting cut is starting to scare me a bit. As soon as I learned that it was a total tactical knife, I was like I must have that. At first, I knew there'll be a couple of mess ups (no pain, no gain) but now, people is saying how they get hurt here and there, don't do this and that. Its turning out to be a scarier knife then I thought it was. Before, I thought I didn't need a drone but now, I think it'll be a good idea because I still want all ten fingers when I'm trained.

Hey..its an MBC-Tactical..nothing to be scared about.it puts reality back into the concept of a knife..Too many people "play" with live blades..a very dangerous idea..
In the old days they would have thought one crazy for training or playing with a live blade..
All the Gunting does is force one to understand WHY the old knife guys had DRONES..Because the real tool will bite you if you mess up cause it doesn't know good guy from bad guy..
especially like a balisong when you go to do all those cool things you see us doing...( we learned the old fashioned way!)
And yes the KIn-Op feature ( Kinetic opening) and the way to use it closed has a learning curve..
But like a Bicycle or swimming..once you got it you really got it.
BUT the Gunting DEMANDS that you never take it for granted..
Its like a Balisong..ignore it..think you are in command..and ooops..swoosh! you be bit!..
But that's part of learning..
And again as in the old fencing & fighting schools we appreciate the reality and we make DRONES....
How else can one safely learn to do MBC stuff?
Have a great time and enjoy..
and yes I certainly have more than my share of scars!I used to play Balisongs are us..ROFL...

Bram

PS: thats also why we have video tapes, Edges2 trainers, seminars..and Instructor Cert courses....to LEARN....
and enjoy!!!!

Just received my "G" and the drone. After hearing you guys talk about it I decided "If I'm getting the live blade, I'd better get the drone at the same time. otherwise, it will be the hospital for me!" Boy I'm I glad I did!

I slide my Gunting into my pocket and the edge of the pocket pushed on the ramp, opening the blade and promptly pushing the tip through the front of my pants. Yikes!

So, my question is about Gunting carries and sheaths. I've seen the ones made by Skunkworks. They look like they are designed to carry on the belt. True? I would like one a little more discrete, like IWB, has anyone seen one,or suggest someone to talk to? I'd like to work with someone who has built for the Gunting before.
Other suggestions for carry would be appreciated as well. How do you guys do it? I'm blue collar so I don't wear a jacket.

Bram: You posted in Spyderco's forum that you were working on holding a workshop in NYC. I'd love to hear about it.

Frank @ Skunkworks makes several types of holsters..from in the pocket, to in the Waist band..to shoulder rigs..

OK what kind of pants do you wear that you opened the blade with the ramp..on your pocket? just curious..A couple of others said this and since I've never done it..I was just curious..
I've carried it since it was a prototype..but its my baby..
I have jeans and jean type pants with knife pockets on each side as well..LOL..
I wear it with my suit, my tux...
and of course Frank makes me all sorts of cool holster rigs!

sorry about your pants..
Guntings are very very sharp!

While we are on the Gunting subject, let me pose a couple of questions.

1. Has there been anything definitive as to whether the Gunting can be classified as a club? I live in Texas...and "clubs" and "knuckles" are not legal. Any test cases...or legal opinions that have firmed up the Gunting's role.

2. The Gunting, as far as I can tell, has a nominal blade length of 2 7/8 inches. Right? Well, no matter how I measure mine...it comes out over three inches. More like 3 1/8. Now, as a guy, I know I have a tendency to inflate measurements...at times. This, however, is not one of them. What am I doing wrong...if anything?

By the way, love the knife.

I was wearing slacks that have a vertical pocket hem. That is how the ramp got pushed before the clip was fully engaged. The pants are actually fine, only the tiniest bit of the tip went through before I noticed and stopped.
Guntings are Sharp? No kidding! more like blood thirsty!

ahh slacks..OK have Frank make you an in the pocket holster..great for slacks, suit type pants etc...
works great for office wear...

The cutting edge is 2 7/8ths...the blade is on mine..whoa..it 3...hmm
well the protos etc are all 2 7/8 inch long from guard to tip..maybe in translation to the laser for production it got lost?
I never noticed..I guess someone from Egineering needs to speak up.. or the laser cutter guy? My spec sheet says 2 7/8ths...
and yours is bigger than mine?
geeeeeeeeeeee
Actually I really don't know whats going on...
thanks for checking...

Ask a student of mine,he's a believer !!Let Steve or Bram show you what a D can do,I ,now am waiting for a Crimpt!!:DBet Vince can make me feel some pain when we play with THAT!!

For partner and solo training at the beginning stages, I 'totally' agree that a dulled drone is the only way to go. However, I've noticed the tendancy after training for a considerable time, to sometimes get too comfortable with a trainer and when it comes time to move a live blade(solo not partner) through the same motions with full speed and aggression, it's just not the same. Even being alone with no partner-pressure, the live blade messes with ones mind a little bit(especially doble). I believe it is essential to move to a live blade during intermediate and up 'solo' drills. It really is the only way to ingrain comfortable/confident body mechanics when the pressure is on.
People who train in firearms usually move right into training with a live weapon in solo practice/target shooting, and reserve paintball/dummy rounds for practice against live opponents. I think a similar approach is necessary with a blade. Get comfortable with moving a live blade solo after a foundational skill building phase with a trainer/drone and train full speed with a partner with a safe alternative device. IMO.

I think the Gunting was the first production folder to actually have a training drone to match it, which is very admirable and smart on both Bram and Spyderco's part. My FMA training seems fairly different in method and mentality from Spyderco-oriented MBC'ers, however, the gunting as a blade combative instrument is highly valued by me.(I do think it could go longer in the blade, though)

train smart,
Ken

Hahaha, you know what....since me, you and aXed are all getting it. I'm not so keen in being her training partner. How about she trains on you and you train on her and I'll just train on either of you. Sounds good to me.

That means more work for you Steve!! You're going to have to train us so we don't end up injuring ourselves :)

Incidentally all 3 of us work at HOK.

Bram: Just wanted to say that I appreciate such a neat innovation. And find that such a design has valid reason in concept and application. But enough of being politically correct (sorry Sal), will there be ever a 4 inch Gunting?

Krizzard, out.
