For partner and solo training at the beginning stages, I 'totally' agree that a dulled drone is the only way to go. However, I've noticed the tendancy after training for a considerable time, to sometimes get too comfortable with a trainer and when it comes time to move a live blade(solo not partner) through the same motions with full speed and aggression, it's just not the same. Even being alone with no partner-pressure, the live blade messes with ones mind a little bit(especially doble). I believe it is essential to move to a live blade during intermediate and up 'solo' drills. It really is the only way to ingrain comfortable/confident body mechanics when the pressure is on.
People who train in firearms usually move right into training with a live weapon in solo practice/target shooting, and reserve paintball/dummy rounds for practice against live opponents. I think a similar approach is necessary with a blade. Get comfortable with moving a live blade solo after a foundational skill building phase with a trainer/drone and train full speed with a partner with a safe alternative device. IMO.
I think the Gunting was the first production folder to actually have a training drone to match it, which is very admirable and smart on both Bram and Spyderco's part. My FMA training seems fairly different in method and mentality from Spyderco-oriented MBC'ers, however, the gunting as a blade combative instrument is highly valued by me.(I do think it could go longer in the blade, though)
train smart,
