Guyot backpacker and GSI Cup

Well i finally decided on a new cook kit. After looking at cost and durability this is what I decided on. Alot of people complain about the new GSI cups not fitting the nalgene sized bottles. Will I went ahead and got the GSI cup and started there. mine fit a nalgene bottle and was kinda on the loose side. it weighs 5.0 oz. which is the same as a titanium cup and you save about 30 bucks. Plus the titanium is a little on the flimsy side for me. Well alot of people go with the Guyot standard bottle. after looking at the fit the standard bottle moved around enough that you would hear the clanking of the two hitting each other. And there was not enough space to add any padding material. So I went with the backpacker. Why you ask. Well I took and added a strip of cardboard to the cup on the interior. This helps the bottle nest perfectly... no clank heard and it does not pull out with the bottle. Next the stainless steel is only single wall.... put something hot in it and well... Don't put your hand on it. The cardboard works great as a quick coozy. I also have ranger band that goes over the cardboard to hold it there. The band normally rides at the top of the bottle to help with grip for normal drinking. Add this to a maxpedition bottle holder and there is still just enough room to carry a penny alcohol stove for those of you that use them.

a bandana also works well instead of that cardboard.

nice score dude!

:)

I tried a bandana and other cuts of fabric. The main problem is that if you pull out the bottle to take a drink the fabric has a tendency of either coming out with the bottle or moving when you put it back in. The cardboard holds its shape and stays put without any work.

Good stuff. I need to order the GSI Cup, when I ordered it on clearance from REI, it didn't fit, then GSI informed me that they sold some defective (therefore clearance price) to REI. I think REI should have noted that it wouldn't fit, because their listing didn't say anything about it being defective and even stated it would fit a standard bottle.

I got one of these guyots and gsi cups from twowolves a few weeks ago. ..there's two different size cups apparently.. a 16oz and an 18oz (I think is what was said before in another thread).. ..the two work out great and with then nested together, the weight of the bottle doesn't seem to bang against the cup.

I also ripped apart one of those give away nylon bags companies give out and stitched up a guyot/2 gsi cup holder.. (the second cup will sit over the top, upside down, on the bottle if I decide to get another one)

..one of those cool maxpedition pouches would be nice for it, but I'm a little broke at the moment.. plus. It was interesting to do on a sunday afternoon. ..there's probably 40 yards of thread into it just to "make sure". ;)

Well I worked as a tailor for awhile. Actually I was a kiltmaker. If you guys ever want to do some more in depth sewing there is a site called www.DIYtactical.com that has some great info on patterns and techniques with walkthroughs on making your own gear.

Also if you guys have a Sportschalet in your area they carry the GSI cup and it will save you on shipping. I paid 7.99 for it.

you can use the cord that holds the cap 2 the bottle to tension the cup 4 a nice tight fit...form the cord into a small u and slide the cup down over it.. no cardboard

You can always burn the cardboard as well. Not a bad idea. I got the standard metal and cup. No rattle. Keep them in either a Mountain Smith or Kifaru or Kelty pack, depending on METT-T.

Nice setup.
Maybe you could wax the cardboard and then it would be a great emergency fire starter.

It would melt all over the bottle if it was filled with hot stuff, and then when you put the bottle back in the fire it would immolate!

I just recently had the same problem. I was ordering a pack from campmor and thought I might as well throw in an Olicamp space saver cup (very similar to GSI one). I wanted to get a GSI but campmor didn't have one and I was already paying for shipping so I figured I would give it a try.

I got the cup yesterday and grabbed my Guyot backpacker out of my EDC bag (Chrome messenger) and it was a little loose. I wasn't super happy, but then I went and tried it on my KK 40 oz and it fit like a glove. I primarily use the guyot for every day stuff as it's alot easier to get ice from the ice machine at work into, and I never could really make up my mind which bottle I would use when I was going out into the woods. The cup made the decision for me and now the KK with the cup stays in my woods bag and my guyot is my every day bottle.

I tried the olicup also. After holding the GSI and it next to each other the quality difference was very obvious. The steel seems much heavier duty in the GSI. The spot welds on the handles are larger and the handles fit with alot better tolerances. Also I have tried the bandana thing as well. Freakin gets hot when trying to hold it. The cardboard works similar to those fantastic setups starbucks has. Inner layer with the corrugation middle so it does not transfer the heat to your hand. Also if you guys don't like the price tag on the maxpedition carrier 5.11 makes one that works well and has PALS webbing around it to add smaller pouches. about 15 bucks I think. Only downside is no insulation.

I hope you Guyot/GSI lovers are right.

Im at work and my wife just called. The set I ordered from TwoWolves showed up at the house so I'm a bit anxious to get home. Gotta see what all the hype is. :D

Also got my red Vic farmer in the mail today.

Y'all are a bunch of bad influences. :grumpy: I'm going to have to stop hanging out with you folks.

Since joining the WSS forum, I have been forced to by a Mora Clipper, a Vic Farmer, a Guyot SS Water Bottle, and a Nestor cup for my bottle.

......i've also purchased a Camel Back Mule, numerous firesteels, and....well it just gets silly from there.

You all are terrible influences.

Well, At least you are here now reading our experiences and advice so you get it right the first time instead of freakin trial and error like alot of us :D

Ive had the standard and the GSI for a long time, they are great!! A maxpedition bottle holder completes the setup very well.

I had the 32oz Backpacker with the taper and it was real loose. Bought the 38oz and a perfect fit in the GSI cup. Check out the page at Two Wolves linked about the cup fit. Great customer service from them! They take some of the trial and error away.

+1

Actually has a little room to spare. I'm impressed. Both with the combo and the service at TwoWolves.
