I've been lurking for awhile and have enjoyed my time doing so, but I feel its time for me to ask a question.. ..I want a guyot h2o bottle and a cup/pot that will fit over the bottom of the guyot. I don't want any fancy pants Ti (I just can't justify 40$ for a cup to drink/boil).. ..do any of you guys know a site where I can find these two, *together* (those shipping costs really send me up the wall), that will fit, w/o exception? I've seen the GSI cups at REI, but comments say "Doesn't fit". I am one of those guys who doesn't have much patience so when I order something w/o handling it and it doesn't work, I get kinda pissed. So I'm turning to you guys for help. I don't really have any big sporting goods stores around here where I can handle these things. I've put a sort of EDC collection together via piece meal on the internets, but I'm missing the vital part: water. Any direction to a website that can help me out? Twowolves looked good, but they're out of the cup, which is listed as a GSI which makes me wonder if it will really fit. If the cup comes w/ a lid, that's a bonus. Help? ;)

..and thanks for a great source of information.

[edit]: I just emailed Twowolves and got a reply like 10 minutes later. A response like that just demands business because someone actually cares enough to answer their email, unlike some of the other outfitters I found online and posed the same question to. They've got my business.

lol. ..yeah. I'm all about supporting a "local" business over a huge company so I really wanted to purchase from there.

twowolves are excellent to deal with. They are good people who I consider friends.

The TwoWolves folks are great! My lady ordered me the Guyot Standard and nesting cup from them for xmass--and then got jealous of it when it got here. I ordered one for her for Valentine's day (and some more romantic goodies of course) and it got here in three days!

They'll have my business for a looooooong time. :)

What's the appeal of the Guyot over the plastic Nalgenes? I've been using the latter for years and prefer being able to see what I'm drinking.

All of a sudden, the Guyot seems to be the hot item. Why?

Stainless/aluminum is preferred because you can boil in the container easily. you CAN boil in plastic, but it sure ain't pretty!!

Some are afraid of leaching of BPA from the older Lexan Nalgene bottles. Most, though, probably like the Guyot (and other stainless steel) bottles because you can boil water in them.

I am one of the very few who prefer the 27 oz. Klean Kanteen to the Guyot.

Ah. Well, my Nalgenes are older so I guess they have BPA in them. For the annual amount of water I drink from them, I'm not worried. I drink almost all my water from Kirkland (Costco) plastic bottles so those will probably kill me instead. Matter of fact, I use one or two of those for my hikes more often anyway. Already having a couple MSR .85 mL titanium pots, those are what I use to boil water.

I've never liked the idea of drinking out of containers where I can't see the contents.

I picked the guyot because all the nalgene accessories will fit it and you can boil in it. I will choose metal over plastic any day because of how I treat my equipment at times. ;)

i'm not sure where this fear of Lexan comes from. Every restaurant in America uses Lexan in the kitchen...

Thanks for the kind words guys!

Will get that stuff out to you as soon as possible MagicDot! Thanks for the vote of confidence.

The Lexan is reported to leach an estrogen compound into your water or whatever over time, and the ingestion of estrogen over time can be damaging to certain people.
Since the same estrogen is used to treat menopause and I am heading that general direction, I personally don't care... not sure about the teen tho, she doesnt look like she needs anymore estrogen!! Yikes!
But the new Nalgene bottles don't have that compound in them.
And, as you say, the Lexan compound is used far and wide.

But the stainless bottles are very cool and versatile.
And you gotta luv the new GSI 18oz cups that actually fit the bottles.

I ordered two of the standard Guyots from TwoWolves yesterday. Primarily because of the recommendations in this thread. I've been looking for a place to buy these. Also, I just got a Snow Peak 700 Ti pot to go with the one I will place in my pack. I got that from REI when I returned the SP 600 which, FYI, DOES NOT fit a Nalgene or std Guyot. I like the idea of being able to boil in them. I am not worried about being able to see through them because it will always be water and I will know how much there is inside. BPA is a different story. I don't know much about it, but, being a 30ish single man, I don't like the sound of the Estrogen thing. I thought my breasts seemed like they were growing  Just kidding. I think I can do without the Estrogen, though. I will check back after receiving my bottles. -DT

..there was just a thing on the news about BPA last night. ..it doesn't stick w/ you very long. ..unless you haven't eaten. ..is it good? is it bad? I dunno. ..we live in a world of chemicals and always have. ..everything we do or eat or touch is a chemical compound. ..should I run scared? No.. ..do I enjoy my teflon pans? Yes. ..do I drink lead paint for an after work beverage. No. ..think about the generations before us and the *toxic* chemicals in their lives.. ..was there a mass death? All this stuff needs to be taken w/ a grain of salt. People don't like second hand smoke because, yes, smoke contains the chemicals that *trigger* cancer. ..but there are people out there that smoke non-filtered camels for 60 years and die in their sleep w/ no cancer..

..perhaps by *not* experiencing dirt and germs, we're really just killing ourselves anyway.. ?

Re: BPA's I think it's one more of these things with no real basis in fact. What peer-reviewed studies can someone point me to? Nalgene dropped the formula purely for marketing purposes.

Regardless, I think spending $8 vs. $22 for a bottle that is tough as nails makes more sense. Mine are at least 10 years old and have been beaten about. Still seal fine. Now, if you want to boil water in a tall skinny bottle that will stay hot for some time, go ahead. It just seems to me that these Guyots are the talk of all the forums and maybe people are buying them at almost three times the cost because they read about them somewhere. I like having a water bottle *and* a separate cook pot. The titanium MSR .85 is brilliant IMO. My bottle doesn't fit in it though, I use it to carry my alcohol stove, fuel, and tea. My water bottle fits in a bottle pocket on the side of my packs.

That's not even the least bit conclusive. I suspect you'd have to start eating Nalgene bottles by the dozens to begin to have an issue with BPA's. But all this is good for Nalgene, they get to sell you stainless steel bottles for three times the price. ;)

..see. my point exactly. I chose the bottle because I *could* boil in it. I also got a cup that I could boil in. ..did I pay more for the bottle than I wanted? Kinda. I had considered the lexan, but from what I know about camping and walking about is, I should have *lots* of options in my gear. A belt is something that can hold your pants up, but it can be used for more. That's the same thinking I had w/ purchasing a SS guyot can over a lexan model. I didn't choose it because of chemical factors because, lord knows I drink a shit-ton of local 'shine, but because I put my faith in metal over plastic. I choose metal because I'm "old school". You bought a Ti cup that cost $40. ..for the weight ratio? The way I move, that extra "weight" isn't a factor. If I was an alpine climber, then maybe.. ..but for me, the application and form factor were correct.

..there are no "rights" or "wrongs" in choosing kit. ..if it fits you, then use it/buy it. ::shrug::
