Howdy gents (and ladies)-

I was at Sportsmans Warehouse today looking for a way to blow a couple of small gift certificates I got for my birthday. I was looking at their drink containers and found this bottle for $20:

The price put me off at first, but they seem like they might actually be pretty versatile. Looks like single-wall construction so you should be able to boil water with it, and then not have to have a whole separate pot to carry.

Anyone have experience with it?

I also found a little lid-adapter with basket, that will hold loose tea or coffee:

You can put hot water into any wide-mouth container, shake it around, and have your drink. You just remove the basket and drink out of that container.

With the bottle above, this lid, and one of those cups that fits underneath, I'd have pretty much an entire brew kit in one little package.

I'm really considering blowing my certificates on this setup, I'm liking the idea so far.

Not for nothing bro, but aside from being versatile, there is new evidence that the kind of plastic used in nalgene bottles and clones may emit a chemical that mimics a hormone in your body that suppresses testosterone and increases estrogen. The report said it shouldn't be an issue for the occasional user. I don't know about you, but my nalgene is by my side constantly, not just on the trail, but in my cubicle, on the subway, in bed, at the gym. Something to think about.

There
s also something called the Kleen Kanteen in SS single wall Spooky, over at backcountry.com, 2 sizes too, 20oz & 40oz capacity under $25 each. Over at SwampRat Rat Chat/Survival Forum there is a thread on the Guyot if you want to see what those folks had to say, Q started it.

Thanks guys, for the info and for the other discussions. Is that thread on a subforum here at BF or at a dedicated swamprat forum?

i have one and love it. ive drilled two holes in the rim, below the threads to use with a bail if i want to boil water in it. if you get one, pick up a splash guard and a pouch from maxpedition. i ran across a good write up on one in the hoodlums forum under the cooking section, also has lots of pics.

This is the info I was referencing:

Nalgene Lexan (polycarbonate) bottles, used in the recreation / outdoor containers were recently found to leech bisphenol, which research has shown has an adverse effect on prostate development, tumors, breast tissue development, sperm count and enlargement of fat cells in the body. Scientists have warned against allowing any polycarbonate plastics near your food or water and stated the devastating effects of these chemicals posed the biggest risk to babies during early development. +1 on stainless bottles from now on.

I picked up a Kleen Kanteen a few weeks back and so far its great. Its been dropped and dented once but since there is no coating on the inside (like SIGG bottles have) theres no worries. I like the idea of being able to boil water in it if needed and the carry sling is handy for the trails.

Great, I have 4 or so nalgene bottles aroundthe house. Guess this means I'm gonna have to invest in some new SS bottles.

The Klean Kanteen bottles appear to have a small cap size. Do the guyout bottles have a larger cap size(like nalgene)?

But where can you buy them? Every retailer they list seems to carry all the accessories, but not the bottles themselves. Also, do the stainless cups for Nalgene bottles fit over the bottom of these? Where can one get those?

I bought both the Kleen Kanteen bottles and my Guyot's here:

The Oli-Camp cup is a little too tight on the larger Guyot bottle, but fits the shorter one. Both the Vargo and Snow Peak (700) Ti mugs fit both.

i bought mine at two wolves out doors, just google it. they were very helpful. it seems there was a run on them but when i called they had already ordered more and i got mine in about a week.

Instead of hearsay - read it from the horse's mouth. Here's what Nalgene has to say about it:

The pulling of nalgene bottles from the shelf was a knee-jerk reaction to politics....kinda like when a senator gets caught in an affair....it has no effect on his work duties...but the public questioning forces him to step down. There is no proof that everyday use of Nalgene bottles will cause these problems.

There have been a few great reviews on the stainless guyot bottles....they do work great. Couple downsides: more expensive, heavier; once you use it to cook, it's tarnished; hard to clean. I do like 'em...but just keep in mind the tradeoffs.

I picked up the bottle, the coffee maker device and stole a nalgene cup from my GF. The whole setup is very compact and sleek, and doesn't really weigh much more than my GI cup/canteen setup. I couldn't find a pouch that I was satisfied with to hold them, so I may just make my own.

I am going to hold out on making many judgments until I can give it a full review (which might be a while), but I'll make sure and post pics!

I also saw the guyot squishy bowls which I was rather interested in. Seems they should insulate the hand a bit, they compact tightly, and will bend so you can drink out of them. But the price tag kept me away at nearly $15, hard to spend when tupperware will usually do a fine job.

Yes, the Guyouts are just like Nalgene. The Klean Kanteens have a very annoying cap IMO, while threading them on or off, they make a nasty sound not unlike fingernails on a chalkboard:grumpy:
