Guyot Steel water bottle

I'm with you. I carry the GSI cup and I don't like the metallic taste in my kleen kanteens so I've gone back to Nalgene.

Is it definitely a taste, and not a smell, that you're experiencing?

I'm just wondering because I can smell certain steels very strongly if they have the tiniest bit of corrosion on them. O1 for instance. I can even smell it on my hands after using the knives.

Not that it probably makes any difference one way or the other.

For the past 35 yrs I've used just plain old generic 'denture tabs' in ALL my water containers, and even some camp pots, to get them clean after every trip. The denture tabs are cheap, light, easy to pack and carry in your possibles bag, backpack, PSK. Try a few of these tips Marcelo and then give us feedback. I'm not a bottle fan, always have a small ti pot with me.

My Guyot had gunk under the lip that was very difficult to remove. Is it possible you have some still. I can tell the difference between water from a Guyot and a Nag bottle but neither are unpleasant. As far as weight my Nag bottle and Guyot cup together weight the same as the Guyot bottle alone.

I've switched over to kleen kanteen and guyot water bottles for daily use for the past year or so now, and never noticed a taste to the water as long as i used clean water to begin with. Stainless water bottles are great for water storage and transportation for me. The nalgene bottles always used to make the water taste funny to me, and i never used hot liquids in them. I use and clean my stainless bottles frequently, and only used water from bottled or filtered source and have been totally happy.

Side note, i first used the guyot standard for a bit, but it was pretty heavy. I switched to kleen kanteen and have been pretty trouble/complaint free. I haven't used mine to heat water yet, but when the need arises i know i'll be set.

I got one of the Reduc'e S.S. bottles from storls[goingear] and like it a lot.Been carrying it to work and hiking etc and havent noticed any unpleasant flavors.--KV

kvaughn, is it good to go on an open fire?

Yes-the plastic lid screws into threads pressed in the metal.Bottle without top is all metal. I took 2 -12" braided wire fishing leaders [30 lb. test] and made a noose that will hold it over a fire or you could just set in in the coals. The noose does make it easier to handle.--KV

Yes!

Marcelo, scrub the bajesus out of it (with the ruff side of a sponge), there is a residue in them from manufacturing that might be causing the taste. Clean stainless steel doesn't leave an after taste in water (maybe long term).

Thanks guys, you won't believe the difference it made.

I know what you mean about the metallic taste - I get the same thing but I don't mind it. Guess it just reminds me I'm drinking from steel instead of plastic that may be leaching a little bisphenol-A. :D

I think scrubbing it might help - and maybe changing the water often. I tend to notice it when waters been sitting in it for a few days. I put my tap water through a Brita filter before it goes into the guyot but I still get that metallic taste sometimes.

Still I love it - unless I'm really trying to conserve weight when hiking or camping it's what I take. I can fill it up in a stream and sterilize it over a fire - just not a fan of having to chemically treat water in order to drink it.

Scrubbing the wood-smoke resin off of it after a camping trip isn't much fun though! :o

To help with the woodsmoke resin take a little soap and water and coat outside of your container or frypan etc and the resin should just wash off easily. Saves the time scrubbing, or let it blacken.

I love my guyot and my 27oz Klean Kanteen, clean em with denture cleaning tablets. Works awesome, no aftertaste. Works good on hydration packs too!

Funny thing, my 27oz Klean gets alot more use then my Guyot.....

I use a Nalgene with a Snow Peak Mini Solo (pot, lid, and cup), and it weights less than the Guyot bottle. I like this combo because you can be treating water in the Nalgene, drinking a cup of tea, and making a pot of Ramen at the same time.

I use denture tabs....with great success.......I bought a whole bucnh of the WalMart branded ones...like 75 for 3 bucks or something like that. Great little cleaners they are.

i was tasting the metal in my guyout...so today i picked up a kleen kanteen figuring the smell was the cause... the kanteen has a plastic sippy sports top that should keep the smell far from my nose... ill let you know after i wash it if my theory is correct

I have a question for you guys. whats the difference between the GSI cup and the Olicamp? I purchased a few Olicamps for their ability to nest on the bottom of my nags but of the 6 about 4 have cracked down the side. I believe this is due to the wire not going under the lip of the cup..causes it to flex under pressure and thus crack. Are the GSI's better? heavier steel perhaps? I do have some older SS Texport's that have been batttered in packs and used as digging scoops but that they won't nest with my nag's. Is the GSI SS bottle smaller in diameter than the Nag's....This is one of those issues that has plagued me for years. I liked my old GI cup and canteen but its kind of hard to scrub the inside of it. I like the Nag's because you can wash them inside and out but the lack of a durable nestable cup irritates the crap out of me. Anything yall have found would be helpful. Thanks. Anrkst

I don't own a Guyout bottle, but I do own quite a few Nalgenes. I like my Nalgenes a lot and never saw the need to branch out and try anything different. I have a metal cup that comes with me that I can boil in.

It would be rare that I'd want to boil the entire 32 ounces of a bottle so boiling in a cup is just fine with me. Not to mention I'm pretty anal and would hate to see little dents in my water bottle.
