Gym shorts and knives

One more Tasman Salt guy here. It's clipped to the right front pocket of my surf shorts for tide pool adventures with my six year old, which is the extent of my beach activities these days.

I never carried a knife during a workout, between it being unnecessary ... and honestly unsafe depending where you place it, and what type of workouts you take part in.
But honestly... there is no need for it. Just my 2 cents...

In that hour or so that your lifting weights or running or what-not.. I couldn't really see what you'd be doing that you'd find yourself needing a knife...

I carry this in my bag.

For the off chance that I need to cut people free of entanglement. People like this:

Hi. I often go running out in the fields around the village where I live. It’s very quiet and friendly when it comes to people, I go travelled runners’ tracks and we always say “Hi!” when we cross each other, even if we don’t know in person. When running I anyway carry a knife, one of my folders, depending on the rotation, since it can always happen to get trapped into something, to have to arrange a quick bandage to get back home, etc. For self-defense I carry a pepper spray, I had one bad, scary experience with stray dogs. All these items and my cell-phone go into something like this:

In the gym where I train sporadically it would sound to anyone really weird to carry any knife… but of course, I imagine it can depend on the neighbors one lives in and the types of people one is surrounded by :D.

Look, I'm new around here but this seems to be the wrong attitude. I'm not calling you out but it's really a personal decision whether or not to carry a knife and where. The people that want to take our knives (and guns) ask those kind of questions. We shouldn't.

/soapbox off

Not sure what you think a forum is for. I made clear I meant no offense and then responded to OP's question. To insinuate that I am in any way suggesting taking people's knives or guns away is pure paranoid BS.

As to the original question it appears OP explained that he was curious about a knife on gym shorts or the advisability of locking it up at the gym. To those points I agree with the suggestions made. A light knife like a mini grip poses no problem on any shorts. Plus if your locker is ripped off its not a super expensive loss. That said in 30 years of gyms, I've never been ripped off. Left a knife behind once in a hurry. Picked it up at the front desk two days later as it had been turned in.

I wear a Strider SMF and a Surefire E1B in my gym shorts all the time, at home, quick run to the store...etc.

Manix 2 LW or Al mar eagle. Don't even know they're there.

As far as why a knife in gym shorts, usually for me its night runs or a "comfort day" where I am not working out, but happen to be in mesh shorts or sweats..

Al Mar Falcon, weighs an ounce.

Or a neck knife of some fashion.

Jazub, good call on that thread... lots of good stuff in there.

I always have a knife or 2 on me, whether at home, at the store, beach, or wherever. My reason? Bc I can the only time I don't have a knife is when I'm somewhere strictly prohibited like an airport, but they're in my luggage under the plane. When I wear athletic shorts I usually just throw a small fixed blade in the pocket or clip a folder inside the waist band.

Spydies FTW! I have an old school Spyderco Michael Walker FRN handle/clip it pocket clip, delica old and gen 4....these are ideal in gym shorts, or pjs. Yes, I live in an place where I have land, and sometimes may go outside in pjs...to grab some wood or whatnot....I'll carry a light folder as mentioned, because anything heavier puts weight on the pjs or shorts.

I don't go to gyms, but if I did, there's no way I would leave anything of value in a locker. I've seen too many news reports, and heard too many stories from people about stuff getting stolen from lockers.

Even when people bring their own locks, I've seen some techniques thieves use to easily "pop" open lockers even when there is a lock on it. There's more than one way to open a locker. People might be surprised just how easy it can be.

In a gym, I would keep my valuables nearby at all times in a gym bag (along with water, towels, cell phone, etc). I'd use a duffle bag big enough to be highly visible and not easy for someone to just pick up and walk away with it without being noticed (like some little fanny pack).

As far as the question of "why would anyone feel the need to carry a knife there?", which is a question that seems to come up every now and then, my answer is - I don't just carry a knife for the times when I know I will need it, I also carry a knife for the unexpected times when I don't know I will need it (and I don't mean for use as a weapon). I can't count how many times I've found myself needing a knife at a time, or in a place where I never expected to.

Yes. My stuff is in my gym bag and my bag is within reach at the gym.

If I am going for a run I don't carry anything but my keys.

If I am not running or at the gym I am not wearing gym shorts.

I sometime go running (not to often) but when I do I use a neck knife, Aegis or Flash II clipped inside my shorts. I also sometime walk the dog in track pants or work out pants, again the Aegis or Flash work well very light and reasonably good.

I'm in cotton shorts most of the year and carry a benchmade triage in one pocket and a benchmade Adamas in the other!

I actually carry several different knives at different times... wearing gym shorts and always at the gym.... Spyderco Cricket( in waistband), Microtech Combat Troodon( in Kydex neck sheath), Green G10 Spyderco Worker(Inside waistband).... Trouble doesn't always announce its arrival.

The reason we all carry knives is to have something to cut with if/when it's ever needed. Example - I typically don't carry a knife with me to the beach when we go as a family, unless we have food that may need prep. If I'm surfing, especially on big, rough days, I sometimes stick my tasman salt in my waist band in case of a board leash emergency, etc. However, a couple of weeks ago, while at a crowded beach with the family, my wife runs over to me asking if I have a knife. The only thing I had with me was the Leatherman micra on my key ring. A bather had somehow managed to get a discarded hook embedded in his heel and there was a lot of additional line and weights still attached to that hook. He was desperate to get the line cut away from the hook because every time the water would go back out it would drag all the extra and pull on his heel (don't ask me why he didn't come all the way up out of the water). I was able to cut the line off the hook with the micra and then he was able to work the hook out of his heel. The point being, no matter where you are, you never know what you might need that blade for. Better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. So for me, the Tasman salt is my go-to for lightweight, sweat-soaked carry.

^^This. I have a small SAK on the key ring that holds my gym and locker room access cards. I don't feel the need for a defense knife in the gym or walking to my car, but I would feel stupid if, as Marthinus says, I needed a knife to rescue some idiot from entanglement in equipment.

At the gym, I don't bother but out jogging/running, I wear my dragonfly on a neck setup seen here:

Or I carry my endura in my flipbelt which also holds my cell phone.
