H.E.S.T:Review

Great idea Bear Claw.

You got me thinking about a couple of ideas. The washer is great I am also thinking that a handcuff release, slash screwdriver, slash pick might be a good add to lanyard. Lemme work on an idea.

The RAT DPx H•E•S•T has other uses for the prybar. You can pop bottle caps faster with the prybar than the opener. The opener is also there for a good thumb grip.

The other hold for the knife is a concealed one. hold it upside down in the palm of your hand, forefinger on the "prybar" and blade just poking out of the right side of your fist. Now think about what how you could use in self defense mode without presenting a target, or "grab-able" weapon to the attacker. That "prybar" can do more damage to the maxiofacial area, wrist, throat etc and you have a choice of going in bladefirst (which will get you stuck in and lose momentum), reverse slashing or using the prybar and reverse slashing to continually slash and rip the most tender, painful part of the body. As I have said the RAT DPx H•E•S•T is designed to be non-lethal and ideally your potential attacker won't even know what hit him.

The prybar is really useful as a scraper and for hard metal/aluminum objects. You can also bash it with a rock to split, pry and chisel things. In your test you could have easily used the heavy blade of the knife to separate the pallet. And keep in mind you can use your RAT DPx H•E•S•T skeletonized which gives you an open handle or use the attachments points to bolt on a longer handle/prytool.
You can even make with your own custom spear, mini machete using the three holes and open handle . Try bolting two skeletonized RAT DPx H•E•S•T's together and look at the serious sper blade. If you want get all ninja ass crazy bolt them end to end or four up into a throwing weapon and you have a serious "that dude is crazy" knife ;))

Great photos and keep working that RAT DPx H•E•S•T until you run outta things to abuse it with :)) The point is have fun and share your ideas with other H•E•S•T users, its how we all get smarter.

best

Welcome aboard!! That is very cool of you to jump in here with all of us and stoke the HEST brainstorming sessions. Have you had a chance to travel much with this little monster?? We love stories

There you go...from the man hisself! Thanks for sharing that info. RYP! Gives a bit more insight into the intended uses and possible applications this knife allows.

They also have astronomical #'s of lead in those bottles! :thumbdn:

i wouldn't be surprised. though they did start selling boxes of them at my local Southern California Costco, so I am assuming there is some quality control now...

CAn't say that I've fought my way out of a turkish prison, but I have done a few Turkish Get Ups here of late. For Gin and Tonic, It'll sure put a hurtin on a lime-- That I can say definitively. Now, with my saddleback leather briefcase, corkscrew, and HEST, I'm ready to head south of the Equator once again....

Wire Breaker Notch Part 1:Barbed Wire

OK, first off, these pictures SUCK. It was starting to rain, and it appears that the auto focus on my digital camera was focusing on the background instead of the wire!

I had to scrounge for some barbed wire, my local feed store wouldn't sell just a few feet, they wanted me to buy a whole role of the stuff, but my brother had some at his place in the country, it's been painted beige at some point, but it wasn't rusted. I strung it between 2 branches of a downed tree in our yard.

This was a tricky test, to flex back and forth, ran a high risk of getting a barb in the back of the hand!

Wire-2.jpg

Took about 5 minutes of flexing and twisting the wire while being mindful of the barbs and the blade edge, but it did break the 2 strands!

Well, she does work! The black finish inside the notch did not come out unscathed, but no real damage to the knife itself.

Thanks for pointing out this knife to me over at the other forum Bear Claw. Here I was just remembering how much I liked the old Neely Survival Hunter with the removable handle scales, and now RAT Cutlery & Mr. Pelton have come up with a similar concept with some new features.

Your welcome, the HEST just keeps impressing me as a great "have it when you need it" knife.

I've not decided for sure what's going to be in the handles on mine yet, but I'm having fun seeing what will and won't fit.

This is looking like a perfect knife to keep stashed in my daypack or weekend travel bag. Nothing too obtrusive, but enough to cover most tasks I might need a knife for.

How are the ergonomics of it?

The funny thing is I actually remember hearing about Mr. Pelton's book, Licensed To Kill, on the radio and being interested in getting it. Now I could get it with a knife I am interested in - tempting. Normally I wait till I can handle one 1st, but I do have a bonus check coming at the end of August...

That's what I use mine for, it rides in an outside pocket of a small daypack. Light enough you don't notice it and there when you need something beyond a pocketknife.

Ergonomics are great, I prefer the handle scales, but others have removed them and wrapped it with parachute cord, so it's pretty versatile.

I started "Licensed to Kill" last night, not to far in, but enjoying it!

any idea how the pry bar would do asa window punch?

No, I really wanted to try it on an old clunker car my brother has, but he wouldn't let me!

I'd say if you put the point against a window and tapped the base of the handle on the other side with something, it would probably work.
