H.I.Tomahawk?

'Tis easier to persuade such people that they have business elsewhere right now, with a castrating knife and a look of outrage than with just a look of outrage.

Time to call the pharmacy, I suppose.

I got an e-mail as well Bro.

I think it's a good idea, but I'm afriad it would be cost prohibitive.
To drill a hole that small that far would be a feat even for the kamis I think.

I wonder if RMJForge ha had this problem and if so how they got around it?
Perhaps an e-mail to them might let us know somethng.
I do Know that a guy was selling some smokeable pipe 'Hawks in Missouri and he had all of those he had left confiscated.

We could do as I suggested in the beginning post and make our own handles. Two pieces of hardwood with a saw cut down the center could be epoxied together and the handle carved from that. All one would need to do then is put a small wooden plug in the head end so it would draw through the pipe.

Bro, I think that's the best idea. Make your own handle or get Terry to do it for you if you are not handy. I think the kamis would burn the hole rather than drill which might make the rig look even more suspicious to the customs folks.

Where's Blues? He should be able to fix things with customs so we don't get busted for bringing in pipe hawks.

I really like the pipe style myself but, given the complexities of making them right, my vote goes for a light weapon hawk with a back spike.

Any idea on the style of tomahawk yet Yvsa? Is it going to be a working pipe or one with a back spike? At this present time the are only the cheapie "made in India" and "made in Taiwan" hawks, then there are the custom made ones. I bet the H.I. Tomahawk can bridge the gap. A custom looking/working hawk at a better price than the custom ones. I guess we have to keep our fingers crossed!

I am hoping to make my next HI purchase the 'hawk. I haven't bought any knives since the bowie I bought for my dad in October. I don't think I can wait much longer. I can't wait to see how it turns out. How does a tomahawk compare to a hatchet in terms of chopping ability?

Re drilling a hole through the handle...

It shouldn't be a problem. I've drilled 16" holes in wood (metal as well) on my little South-Bend-clone lathe, drilling 8" from each end; my suggestion would be to turn the handles from stock, with the required taper, on a wood-turning lathe and then transfer them to a metal-cutting lathe, with a decent chuck and fixed steady, to drill the hole. Brazing or threading a drill onto an extension rod is no big deal.

For anbody prepared to pay the transatlantic shipping costs, I'd be willing to give it a try. What diameter hole are we talking about, anyhow?

Sorry I ddn't get around here much yesterday. I was kind of puny.

Well the way I count it, weapon it is.
I got 5 for weapon.
- 3 for pipe.
- and 2 for working, with some waffleing between all of them.

If this one works out maybe we will do a pipe 'Hawk next. Although Crazycrow.com does have some nice _solid iron_ Pipe'Hawks that are very reasonable.
I think they're probably strong enough for a weapon, but not strong enough for really hard work.
I have done some light chopping with mine.
But I had to dull the edge because some people wouldn't keep their fingers away from the edge when using it in ceremony and cut themselves and then complain.

I think perhaps the best thing to do is compromise a little bit and make the H.I.'Hawk in between a super light weapon like Rusty's and a heavy using one that I have made from a full size double bit axe. That 'Hawk is Osage sized!!!!
Rusty's 'Hawk is Apache size.

I think I may have some 2X material
that's straight grained enough to make the model and I will check on it tomorrow when the snow and ice melts off our walk to the shed a bit.
I will do my best to get the model done and to Uncle Bill in 30 days or so, but don't hold me to it.
I have to conform to the things my body will let me do and this damnable cold weather and the weather changes is putting kinks in my best laid plans.

When I get the design down right I will try to post a pic of it, perhaps more than one to tide you guys over until we get the real deal.
