"Hamon" thread

Nick, it says in the rules, don't make me drag them up please . . .
Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

It might be good if someone did drag them up. The only rule that I can find on this is in the Knife Exchange forum rules, not in Posting Rules for this website in the Rules of Bladeforums.com.

Regardless of the general comment at the top of the page, this particular rule appears to be very specifically tailored toward threads in the Exchange where folks are looking to buy something, and whether it is really intended to apply to every post on every forum here is IMO ambiguous at best.

SECTION 4 - Rules for buyers

First, see section 2.2 above.

1.Do not post in an ad unless you are interested in the item / service that is being offered.
2.ABSOLUTELY NO COMMENTARY OR FEEDBACK IN SOMEONE'S THREAD. Seriously, if you stomp on someone's ad, your account can and will be locked.
3.THREAD NECROMANCY IS HIGHLY DISCOURAGED. Do not bump threads that are older than 120 days. Send the seller a message instead.

If this was intended as a general rule, it seems to me that it should be listed on the overall Posting Rules where everyone would easily see it, instead of in a link that someone might not ever see or read unless they were interested in exchanges here - and even then under the title of "Rules for buyers" (implying perhaps that it does not apply to "For Sale" threads by sellers???)

But maybe there is a rule somewhere else that more clearly applies to threads like this one? It would be good to know. Because I never claimed to be the sharpest tool in the shed anyway, and I admit that I find the organization of rules at this website to be . . . unique.

(EDITED TEXT)

I've always relied on two things with respect how this is interpreted. First is the "general rule" to which you refer - one that although somewhat ambiguous, does suggest it is applicable to all forums. Second - I've seen bf mods (presumably the final arbiters/interpreters of rules), over time, offering similar reminders, in this subforum, to people about resurrecting old threads. My personal view/interpretation of the rules is formed by those two factors. Others my feel otherwise. Absolute clarity in the form of rule revisions is usually a very good thing.

I don't have an absolutist stance on thread necromancy, as every thread is different. I like seeing threads I haven't seen in awhile, in some cases. Like running into an old friend :)

Some threads are more timeless than others, and therefore have what it takes to keep providing value, even if they've been forgotten for awhile. Other threads, well, their value is limited and sometimes they're brought up for the wrong reasons.

Rules and regs are good and necessary, but they ought to be tempered by sound judgement informed by a general knowledge of the forum and an understanding of why it is that people spend time here. Imo :)

Lorien, I personally couldn't agree more with your comments. But one man's interesting thread of value is another forumite's thread of crap. Who's to judge?

Hell, I wish none of the rules existed so we could really go for the throat (j/k);)!

.....Who's to judge?....

DEMOCRACY!!

Platinum and above Members - notice I didn't say Gold ;) - get to vote!

If a thread has been inactive for +3 months (or whatever) and is re-posted then it's flagged as such and our high-level Members get the opportunity to either "Revive" or "Banish" it by clicking the relevant button. Most votes in the ensuing 12hrs (or whatever) decides/wins.

OK, so STeven should probably get 5 votes and Lorien 3....

:D

I have only seen one on his knives posted at this point, I would post pictures of my favorite examples I have seen him post on his website, but I don't know how... Anyway not to take away from any other makers but Mr. Lamey's temper lines, in my opinion, are the most beautiful that I have ever seen!

Oh! And as this thread hasn't been banished yet I must say I do concur with my learned friend Gottmituns78: Having this Hamon conversation without reference to http://lameycustomknives.com/Site/Hamons.html is akin to a discussion on persons both blind AND deaf without mentioning Helen Keller ;)

Cheers....Pete

All democracies, revolts, revolutions, guillotines and firing squads aside...that's a very cool hamon, Lorien! I wouldn't mind seeing more...even if a new thread had to be started to compromise with the less sentimental party.

My photography skills lack, but here are a couple.

The rule on necromancy was meant for the Exchange. But if a seller doesn't want to be bothered by having an old and completed sale bought back, he can always close the thread.

A workable solution might be to start a new thread and add a line to the first post that points to an older thread on the same topic for anyone who might be interested. But in reality, that will rarely happen.

Mods opinions on this differ like everyone else's. If it feels good, do it. :)

Bolded part is because, generally speaking, people are too stupid, stubborn or lazy to try.

Thanks for the suggestion. I think it is a good one.

The problem with "start a new thread instead" is how many newbies necropost on their entry here.

Lorien, I love seeing those blades getting some use! thanks for posting them. Personally I like having threads that run on, If I want to see Hamons I go to the Hamon thread rather than search through 20 different threads. Choppers, I go to the chopper thread.

Here's the clay-hardened blade on one I'll be posting up after it makes it's way back from Paul Long for a really fancy sheath, and from Joe Mason for some gold inlay...

I feel the same way. Damascus thread, ironwood thread, frame handle thread, ivory thread- general topics that are custom knife specific...these types of threads have legs anyway and it wouldn't bother me at all to have a half a dozen or so of them stickied or whatever. Developing a 'democratic' system where they can individually be unstickied if the forum gets tired of them could make that work maybe.

I would encourage newbie collectors to search/view old threads here as they present excellent learning opportunities. Especially the many educational and thought provoking discussion threads we use to have here on a regular basis. And I see nothing wrong with their bringing threads back up if they have questions or seek further information.

IMO, this Customs & Handmade forum has for the most part turned into a 'Gallery' forum or at the very least gravitating that way.

Amen, brother, and I had that shizznit, which is why I and many other veteranos do not actively post any more? Simon, carnal!

Mi Vida Loca, comprende'?
