Hand sanding - i've broken my spirit

Any pictures of work produced using these? Which would be equivalent to 400-600 finish? Curious about these.

This probably isn't really being fair since I'm using the block to maintain the finish of a user but here it is.

600 is plenty to get a nice hand rubbed finish, I've done a number with 400 grit and as long as it's clean and uniform, it looks great.

You picked a difficult blade to learn on (on a number of levels), since there is so much surface area to thoroughly sand, and with regard to the finishing passes merely because it's so wide and there is a lot of room for error and causing any non-uniformity. Any slight movement in the finish passes can show up as a wiggle and then you have j-hooks etc.. Just make sure you've gotten rid of all of the previous scratches with extra lights and even magnification and then spend some time getting the finish even with the right size sanding block and backing, which I'm sure you're already well aware of by now. You'll get it!
