Hand Sanding Tips

Hi Guys,

Very interested in this as well. Since I am new to hand rubbing, does anyone know how to do it on a hollow grind? I can do it on a flat grind easily, but the contour for the hollow is not working for my sanding blocks.

Salem Straub has an awesome site with a lot of good info on it. Here is one page where he shows how he made a sanding "block" for a hollow grind.. https://sites.google.com/site/vorpa...-3/how-i-make-a-steel-12-radius-sanding-block

Just make sure that the outside diameter of you "block" is a "tiny" bit smaller than the diameter of the wheel that you used to make your hollow grind. And improvize by finding things that would work for your size contact wheel to hammer your block to shape in.

You can even cut out a piece of some hardwood or something using a bandsaw to have the same curve that matches the curve of the diameter of your size wheel, and then just use a belt sander and/or files & rasps to clean up the curve till it matches the wheel nicely. After that you can use something like superglue to attach a piece of thin strapping metal to the piece of wood so it conforms over it, giving you harder surface.

Or you can go Salem's route, but instead use the piece of wood you shaped as a form to shape a piece of mild steel, or even annealed carbon steel over it.

Just be creative. ;)

Also, Alpha Knife Supply does sell metal sanding blockes made especially for hollow grinds. Here is the link to them, but it looks like they only have a 14" diameter block in stock at the moment.. http://www.alphaknifesupply.com/hardware.htm#HA-TBSB You can call them and ask when they might be getting more in and what are all the sizes they offer.
