I used to work at a gun range/store until recently. Of all the guns in this thread, the Sig 238 and its bigger bore 938 (9mm) were always the easiest for women to rack the slides on. I'm told that Sig Sauer designed the 238 and 938 with women shooters in mind, which is to say that the recoil spring on them is low enough that most women will have an easy time racking them. I've had women coming in the store that couldn't rack anything other than a 238 or 938.
My .02.
EDIT: I dismissed .22 LR guns in my response. Yes, they're the easiest to rack, but they're not something I suggested unless an absolute last resort.
Nice choice there! Glad she tried a lot and was happy with the S&W. Always nice to be happy about a purchase after trying the other options. What were you looking into John?
I was looking at the Ruger LC .380 Custom, the Glock 42 .380, and the Ruger LC9. I'll try some other shops when I get a chance.
I can't remember the last time I saw a box setting on the shelf at a store under normal conditions. The local WalMart doesn't put any rimfire on the shelf when they do have it. You have to ask for it and if you're not in the store within an hour or so of stocking you'll be too late. A small local shop had a special sale this past Thursday starting at 4:00 advertising ammunition. I got there around 4:30 and there were no parking spots available. Bricks of 22s are still bringing $45 or more at the gun shows with 22mag selling for $20+ for a box of 50. Hope she enjoys shooting it and continues to be able to find ammo. Next time I have a chance I'll have to check out the S&WLuckily I have close to 2000 rounds on hand. The actual gun stores have it for a bit less than $6 a box, still cheaper than anything else.
Winner is the S&W M&P Compact. She shot a Walther, Ruger, and Browning, and liked the S&W best.
Hey Zen - good to see you still here!
