Handgun question

I've heard nothing but good things about the M&P compact .22, so much so I really want one! Congrats to the Boss for her new firearm, good to hear her getting back into shooting!

I used to work at a gun range/store until recently. Of all the guns in this thread, the Sig 238 and its bigger bore 938 (9mm) were always the easiest for women to rack the slides on. I'm told that Sig Sauer designed the 238 and 938 with women shooters in mind, which is to say that the recoil spring on them is low enough that most women will have an easy time racking them. I've had women coming in the store that couldn't rack anything other than a 238 or 938.

My .02.

EDIT: I dismissed .22 LR guns in my response. Yes, they're the easiest to rack, but they're not something I suggested unless an absolute last resort.

If you read my posts carefully you will see this is not for personal defense, just something to get back into shooting and have fun.

Nice choice there! Glad she tried a lot and was happy with the S&W. Always nice to be happy about a purchase after trying the other options. What were you looking into John?

I was looking at the Ruger LC .380 Custom, the Glock 42 .380, and the Ruger LC9. I'll try some other shops when I get a chance.

Cool - I have not seen one M&P .22 yet -

I hope you all have better luck finding .22 than I have had over the last year.

My little Colt is a favorite for the kids, and I love to fire it as well since it is so accurate and easy on the hands and ears.

Good job getting the Boss back up and running, Mr. K!

Luckily I have close to 2000 rounds on hand. The actual gun stores have it for a bit less than $6 a box, still cheaper than anything else.

Well John, you mentioned trading a vaquero in this deal... In my opinion the vaquero is way cooler than the guns you mentioned. If there is a purpose that you want to carry or something, then I might feel differently. But on straight coolness and class, i think your vaquero wins

I have not shot the glock 42 or the ruger lc 380, but I have shot the LC9....Long trigger pull and I am not a huge fan of that for many reasons.

I can't remember the last time I saw a box setting on the shelf at a store under normal conditions. The local WalMart doesn't put any rimfire on the shelf when they do have it. You have to ask for it and if you're not in the store within an hour or so of stocking you'll be too late. A small local shop had a special sale this past Thursday starting at 4:00 advertising ammunition. I got there around 4:30 and there were no parking spots available. Bricks of 22s are still bringing $45 or more at the gun shows with 22mag selling for $20+ for a box of 50. Hope she enjoys shooting it and continues to be able to find ammo. Next time I have a chance I'll have to check out the S&W

Around me the local Academy usually has it but limits your purchase to 1 large box or 2 boxes of 100. Last time I was in there CCI box of 100 was 7.99, no large boxes.

Winner is the S&W M&P Compact. She shot a Walther, Ruger, and Browning, and liked the S&W best.

I am a little late to suggest this gun but I agree. I have the M&P22 full size and really like it. Very easy to rack the slide. Fits my hand perfectly. Never had a failure to load, fire or eject. I have not seen or held a compact yet.

Man, I would love to get my hands on some affordable 22.
It's nice to hear Connie's getting her hands back on some firearms and getting out doing some practice. Great way to do it too!
That S&W M&P22 has to be nice. I've had my hands on the M&P line for awhile (full size, compact and shield in 9). I really like them.

BTW, hello everyone!

Hey Zen - good to see you still here!
