Handle scales on traditional knives

I tend to prefer jigged bone over all other material - in darker shades but I do like a variety of colors (up to a point). Browns, chestnuts, ambers, goldens, antique yellows, dark reds, dark greens, dark blues. Mostly I have shades of browns, reds, and ambers. I've got some yellow Delrin. I like Victorinox checkered alox. I like the occasional smooth bone, but it is not my preference.

I only have a few stag-handled knives. I like stag, but within some limits - I like closely matched, not excessively textured, and not very thick. And I am usually not willing to pay the premium price over the same knife in a different handle material. I don't really care for wood at all, but I don't know why that is. I've looked at the newer acrylics with some interest but have never bought one.

The variety of handle materials is one of the things that makes traditionals so interesting. I get caught up on a particular handle material for a while then I start getting interested in the next handle material. I started out really liking wood but then got my hands on some smooth and jigged bone. I love them so now I'm really looking for some sawcut and soup bones. Stag is also starting to interest me on certain knives. It's too hard to choose one!

I guess You are right.:D

I'm pretty hung up on gecs acrylic scales. The few I own, have a nice smooth yet slightly textured feel that makes a good "worry stone". I also really enjoy all the patterns, colors, and the depth of the acrylics.
After that ,I'd have to say that wood is my second favorite. I love the almost mesmerizing natural patterns on my amboyna case congress

I do like the acrylic ones too. Especially the "glow in the dark", with a childlike fascination..
I was happy to see a little kind of depth coming out in the green handle, similar to the tortoise shell material.
Amboyna wood sounds great:thumbup:, maybe You have a picture to share?

I prefer covers with character, like gnarly stag, horn, primitive bone and burl wood.

I prefer mammoth. I just love the variety. Stag would be my second choice.

Dark and amber stag is my favorite. Not too thick and with some popcorn. Bone and wood are second choices.

I seem to like the natural handles. Stag is my favorite, burnt just perfectly. But jigged or smooth bone is nice, Appaloosa bone (or similar appearance) is great. The old Tested era Case jigged bone, or Rodgers bone handles are very eye-catching. I love buffalo horn or sheeps horn. Pearl and abalone is very nice, especially smoked pearl. Some woods are very nice, some are very boring. I've never cared for the old celluloid "Christmas Tree" or "GoldFlake". Although some of the new GEC knives have very interesting looking handles, if they aren't natural material, I'm not buying.

Here's a quick pic of the congress I mentioned :)

I like stag, ram horn, bone and micarta/paperstone the best followed by woods and yes that includes Buck's diamond wood and then delrin. I like leather and stag on fixed blades.

Sounding good, kind of nature like colors!
I also like jigged bone handles and the varieties of patterns used.
The Victorinox checkered alox looks to be alike some jigged metal handle..?

I've gone through many phases over the years. Stag, bone, wood, Delrin. I'm now on a Micarta kick. The rougher, the better.

Thanks Rookie, very good listing!
Just to highlight three: Appalosa, old Case and Rogers bone would be interesting to see.
Maybe someone has some pictures to share?
Unfortunately I haven't something like that, but will try to get some of my wood handles listed this weekend...

Thanks. The scout is paper micarta. The barlow is canvas micarta. They feel as different as they look.
