Handled a Spyderco today....

You know what I think is funny? Hearing everyone say spydies are ugly. Christ I always bought them cause I thought they were sweet looking. I'm serious. For me when I was getting into the knife scene it was always a throwdown between Spyderco and Cold Steel. I just thought CS was the uglier of the two so I bought spydies.

My first Spyderco was an FRN Endura.I've owned a Lum Tanto,S/S Police,Herbst and still have a Military, but My all time favorites are the FRN offerings. Some people claim Clip-its are Fugly??? NOT.Just My 2 cents worth.tom.

I'd take a Spydie over an Emerson any day! (And have enough money left over to buy my girl a nice dinner and a movie.):D

I own several Spyderco's and I think they are generally FUGLY (with exceptions like the Kiwi and the Calypso range), then again I didn't get them to hang on the wall :p
Look at the Ti-Salsa, it's ugly beyond belief, but I've never come across another knife in this blade size that slices so well and that I can bring so much force to bear on it. Athetically it's FUGLY, technically it's a work of art ;) .

They generally look like hard working tools, and guess what, they are hard working tools :) .

ALthough new to this forum, I am not knew to knives. My first kife was an Endura that I picked up in California 13-14 years ago. I used it nonstop for years. It went to the first Gulf War, then with my son twice to Honduras. I used it on our family farm for at least 7 years. It was my first consistent EDC for at least 8 years. I traveled all across this great county many times with one.
I have used this n my daily life, and have as a means of protection - even using Delica trainers.
I am suprised at some of the feedback about looks and light feel. These are some of the great features. It is light, slim, sharp, and reliable. IT is easy to always be there. This is a big key - it is always there.
Police authorities are very familiar with this knife as many officers own them. They are small enough for most jurisdiction not to attract negative attention. They work to work and protect if needed. My wife, kids, and dad and dad-in-law all have one. I bought if for them.
Ever heard of KISS Keep it simple stupid? This is simple, simpler that my knives worth a thousand $ or more - but I will always own one. It works. I think it would be a fantastic way to get into knives. Use it,keep it - then judge all others on its performance to spend your future moneys.

Sal - good for you to be part of this forum!

dylan_d, you might want to look at participating in the spyderco passarounds, currently there is a FRN 93mm rescue outm on passaround.

That way you could try an FRN spyderco knife without having to buy it first.

I also thought Spyderco's were FUGLY. Then I bought one and then some more.
One of the handest knives I ever had was the spydero meerkat.

I had a number of spyderco's I sold for some stupid reason, don't even remember why anymore. There must have been something else I thought I wanted.

Out of all the knives I have sold the Meerkat was the one I wish I would have kept.

I just bought a spyderco meerkat from a forum member today and I can't wait until it's clipped back in my pocket. :)

I really wish I would have kept my spyderco salsa too.

I guess they can all be replaced :)

I have a vague memory that a few years ago, I thought $50 was a lot of money for a good knife that you could use for years.
Now that I know more of the reality of the marketplace, I'm wondering how much you were hoping to pay for the perfect knife.
I'm not that wild about FRN myself; my EDC is now a steel-handled Co-Pilot, which replaced my old carbon fiber Dragonfly. To my mind the CF Dragonfly was just about perfect actually.

I know it is been said a bunch....but I must say that spydie's are the best and I have had my delica for 3 years as my edc it has not changed.

in fact I am kind of pissed :p because it works so damn well as a daily utilty that I have no need to change my edc.

sometimes I romantize about a sweetie but every time I use it, it behaves flawlessly that I can't even think about another knife.

everyone should own a delica it is small and comfortable in the pocket and totally accessible when it is needed.

it is the ultimate in modern knives.

I have yet to check out VG10 as compared to ATS55 but 3 year ago I thought ATS55 was the tops.

Delica's are one of the best, if not the best, value EDC's the industry has to offer. They are not fancy. They are not pricey. They WORK extremely well. Thats about it, and it's enough.

ajrand ...

Well said ! I couldn't have put it better myself but I'll try ;)

Light, strong, dependable, relatively cheap, ubiquitous, excellent steel, size, sheeple friendly, good lockback and easy opening. Need I say more ?

Long live the Delica !!

I know a lot of folks who would - nothing wrong witht hat, we all have what we trust. I've come to trust the Emerson knives I've owned, even though others have had weird un-reasonable problems I havent, and they've done for me very well - thats my only reason for taking them first.

Spydercos ugly? Dunno...I think my Spyderco Dive Probes are kinda cute :) (shown with a Strider BD for size comparo)

I agree the Delica and Endura and any other FRNR spydie are one hell of a knife for any price.

Nine times out of ten they will out cut and be easier to sharpen than almost any other comparible folder by Benchmade,Microtech,Emerson ect.

Spydercos are designed to cut above all other aspects and isnt this the reason we carry knives,to cut?

As far as the opening hole is concearned, it was designed as a means of controlled opening but they do become easier to flip open as they wear in.

I own many folders from many different companies in price ranges from $30 up to $200 but if I were entering some kind of cutting contest you can bet your ass that with me would come some kind of spyderco, be it a folder or one of their fixed blades as my choice knife.

I must also say that I find beauty in spydercos knives.

The fact that most Spydercos are rivited together is a good thing I think, I have carried them for years and never needed to take one apart, also rivets rarely fail and I do worry about the screws falling out or the pivot comming loose on other designs, Spyderco is mearly doing us all a favor by riveting their knives together.

Also, you should carry the thin and light weight delica for a few days and then carry another make in the same blade length with a thick stubby dual metal lined g-10 or whatever handle and then also add carrying ease to your decision.

Spydercos are like the Volkswagon Beetle -- both designed purely for function with no regard for appearance, both came out looking pretty weird, but the more familiar they become the more you get to like the looks of them. Okay, I'll admit it; they are ugly -- but I wouldn't be caught dead with a car or a knife that was designed to look pretty and the heck with function. There are plenty of those around, both cars and knives....

Glass reinforced nylon is very tough stuff, but it does have the look and feel of plastic. Maybe you'd be happier with a different handle material; Spyderco uses others and they're tough too.

I own knives by many different manufacturers - I'm not a Spyderco "arse kisser" - but I have to say my PE FRN Delica is my favourite knife.
Great steel, great blade shape, easy to open and close one-handed, lightweight, compact, reliable, robust, inexpensive and grippy.
As a firefighter I need to be able to rely on my equipment.
I know I can depend on my Delica.

Well, I'd say that most of the other people have covered all of the major points very well. The only thing I have to add is a response to Steve O's post.

You said that you never bought Spydies because:

THE PLASTIC HANDLES Well, Spyderco's higher end knives come in a variety of different handles. There's G10, Almite coated aluminum, Stainless Steel, Micarta, Titanium...

S.S. HANDLES W/ LESSER STEEL True enough...but keep in mind that the models w/ S.S. handles are the lower end spydies.

DON'T TRUST KNIVES THAT CAN'T BE TAKEN APART COMPLETELY. Many of Spyderco's higher end models can be taken apart. The exception would be the Police I believe. ( There might be more that can't be taken apart that I'm not aware of...but I know there are alot that can be.)

I hate VW Beetles...

Anyways, how are the SS Delica's compared to the FRN's?

EDIT: I just noticed that the SS Delica's do not have the option for left handed clip set up. Do newer models have this option?
