Handled a Spyderco today....

You know I'm not even sure if G-10 is plastic Sal. But people seem to consider it to be so much more "quality feeling" then FRN and I beleive when most people refer to a knife handle feeling "plastic like" they are usually talking about zytel/frn. I haven't really heard that comment made about G-10.

p.s.- Sal, just want to thank you for your companies production of the FRN Native...Amazing Knife!!!
p.p.s.- Can we get a limited run of the Delica in G-10 soon?? Please!

I second that, the handles are the part I least like on the Delica. G10 would take it to the next level, IMO.

Glass filled epoxy may be just as much a plastic as glass filled nylon, but it feels different, and looks different. It's just prejudice -- zytel is not cheap plastic, it holds up well, but it ... well, it just sets off my cheap plastic detector, I guess, and G10 doesn't.

Zytel is very sturdy and extremely lightweight. Even though the stuff truly feels cheap I don't mind a Zytel handle in a rather inexpensive knife designed to be used. FRN Spydercos are in that category.

The Spyderco PE Delica and PE Endura are classic knives. Anyone who likes knives should have at least one of each. Can someone tell me what year they were introduced? I would also like to know what different steels they were made of as they evolved. dylan_d, you should get a Delica or an Endura, depending on what size you like. After you carry it for a while you won’t be sorry. :)

The Spyderco knife that "converted" me was the Native. I still think it's the best FRN knife I have ever used! Try the Native first.

The Delica is about the nicest looking knife I've had the pleasure to view, and use and cherish. I like the looks of most Spydies very much, and the Delica is my favorite.

I was attracted to the Delica at first because of it's pure beauty; no kidding.

It is a good thing that some Spydies can not be easally fliped open, many places a gravity knife is illegal.
I do like the Pre 98 Delica and Enduras handle shape better but for the best FRN knife out there, try the Native.
G10 is plastic but it is kind of like the differance between pine and Oak.I like G10 better than any other scale material.

Long ago I hammered the sh!t out of the zytel handle on my old CS Voyager, and I couldn't hurt it! That stuff is tuff and stiff, don't let the light weight fool you. But I too am a G10 fan. Got it on my Police, Wegner and Military and it is the way to go IMO.
My experience is that lockbacks generally take a little more to open than liner/frame locks, no biggie.
I like the Spyderhole much more than the stud/etc. I like the looks of several of the spydie designs. I think the Police is the greatest overall (blade/handle) shape ever made. Best knives: overall/blade steel/quality...for the $$$.
Of course that's just my opinion, but I'm not wrong! :p ;)

I love my Spydies, all seven (or is it eight?) of them. I actually prefer the feel of the FRN and chose FRN over SS for my recently purchased Cricket. Buy the Delica and use it for a while. Keep it in a LARGE drawer at night, Spydies multiply.

I love the reassuring sound of my Starmate clicking into place.
So far, I only have one knife that I have a fairly major legit gripe on (a Herbst that I got that didn't always engage fully, but If I open it hard enough, it would) and all the other knives were great. The herbst is a great piece in my opinion, it's just that I'm not likely to carry it often because the keys will wear on the coating on the scales.
But I also have my share of FRN blades, Endura and Native, and they're certainly great and tough. The Endura is less "feelable" than my CRKTs, and I use to not like them because of their looks and their plain looks, but now I fully embraces it.

wow. a lot of replies for such a "basic" knife. Not much to add, other than while I too continue my search for the "perfect" knife, the Delica is along for the ride. I have more folders than anyone needs (2, 1 in case you lose the other :) ) but the Delica is the only one that I always have with me.

Light, easy to carry, easy to handle, great steel, sharp, gets the job done, inexpensive enough not to lose sleep over if it gets lost (Sal, btw, I want one with a blaze orange handle)...

Spydies Ugly ?
they are the best looking, better working ergonomics knives for the money.
which other company as put such a strong effort in finding new solutions ,balanced with style and design ?

an episode:
years ago i were teaching -visual communications- in a famous and private italian design school.
in the industrial design class, during the case-history lessons, the teacher bring up several Spydercos, as an example of form following functions tools ,and stated that this process created a new style indeed.

As anything with a personal style ,it could be loved or hated -i love them- but how many other folders are so particular looking, immediately recognizable and 100% efficients ?

my best

I don't post much on this forum because I really don't own as many spydies as many folks here, but I'm still a huge Spyderco fan, The first knife I ever bought at a knife show was a Spyderco Michael Walker lt/wt and after six years it's still a favorite EDC. I have some really beautiful custom folders, but a couple of my spydies are just as pretty and of equal quality. They would be my Kiwi in jigged bone, the Howard Viele and the Jess Horn C27. I may not buy every Spyderco that comes out, but they always make me look.

Clipped to my back right pocket is a PE teflon coated Delica with VG10. It has been seeing more use than the BE800HS clipped to my fron right pocket.
