Handles on Scrapyard knives....

I've recently begun taking in stray Dogs myself...

Here are my first two:

I really like the feel of the Res-C handles
I see more "adoptions" in my future! :D

OINK! :pig:

Res-C is by far my favorite handle material. Its two weaknesses are heat—it will melt if left too near a fire—and abrasion, as it can be cut. I’ve had some very minor damage to handles left under car seats that have been cut by the steel frame/tracks of the seat moving back and forth. I recall some reports of chipmunks or squirrels gnawing on Res-C handles and doing some damage on knives left exposed at campsites, also.

Noss did destruction tests on two Resiprene-C handled Busse’s I believe, a Scrapyard and a Basic 9, and in both cases the handles were still functional after the blades gave up the ghost. By comparison, on micarta-slab/full-tang handle Busse’s, the impact and vibration he imparted by pounding the blades over and over again through concrete, steel bar and pipe with a 3-lb. steel mallet caused handle fasteners to eventually fail, leaving tangs bare with no grip. So in Noss’s tests, the Res-C handles functionally survived more punishment than micarta-grip handles. Of course, these were extremely severe tests meant to see what the knives would take if pushed all the way to destruction—not many real-world applications, but I think it serves as an interesting head-to-head comparison.

Here’s a Basic 9 handle after his destruction testing—still perfectly functional, although there was some minor splitting at the butt (not pictured):

Just as a point of interest, here’s a tang photo with Res-C grip removed, showing the full-thickness reduced tang and how all angles are radiused to prevent stress risers. As was indicated in an earlier post, when spread during finishing the thong ferrule that passes through the hole at the butt also serves to anchor tang-to-grip:

So many awesome replies. I hope to have my first Scrapyard soon!

Thank you everyone!

Well allright.....an Urban Regulator is inbound. I have a thing for obscenely thick knives. ;)

Wonder what the steel is.....

:D

A fantastic choice for handling zombies; right up there with a TGLB! Do it "Daryl Dixon Style"!:D

Will, you are being too modest. Did you not volunteer that Basic 9 to Noss for his testing?

Wow, cool handle!

The Urban Regulator arrived today and it's a monster that is very comfortable to hold...Lighter than it looks and it looks MEAN! :D

Thanks for the help everyone. It's nice to have a stray dog.

... Honestly, I like chopping with the Res-C handles better than any of the other Busse clan blades. They are amazingly ergonomic and easy on the mit while allowing for a secure grip.
Well said, and I agree!

Here's a handle out of Res-c they made for a military unit as an escape and evasion tool.I've chopped through hickory with no damage to the hatchet.

Great pictures guys! Res-C is an incredible material. These handles can definitely take one heck of a beating. Shock absorbing and they don't break/wear down as you're using them.

Res C is not indestructible, but is my favorite handle material. Even in the event that someone would have a problem, the shop would replace the handle pronto and get you back in business. I wouldn't hesitate to buy a resiprene handled knife if I were you, as I won't hesitate to buy my next one, you know, when the Basic 8 is released. :D

Of course you guys were right....grippy, firm, comfortable. Nice!

I like that these have a different identity than the Busses that I have. Really a cool knife.

I do appreciate the information everyone. :)

The Regulator handle is by far my favorite. It begs to be put on a big chopper.

Nice score!

Here's the info from the Scrap Yard website on Res-C.

Handle Material Used

All Scrap Yard knives come equipped with Resiprene C handles. Think of Resiprene C as an all-terrain truck tire with better chemical resistance.

Resiprene C was made famous as a handle material when it was used on the Busse Combat Basics. These handles have all the advantages of rubber handles without any of the disadvantages. They are comfortable, shock absorbing, slip resistant when wet, and provide insulation from the cold. Unlike Kraton, Resiprene C is a Non-hygroscopic material which means that it will neither "take on" or "emit" fluids. This quality not only gives them unparalleled durability but makes them extremely easy to keep clean as dirt will simply not stick to them. It is impervious to salt water and petroleum based chemicals, and is much more resistant to higher and colder temps than is Kraton. Resiprene C is likewise impervious to the powerful insect repellent, DEET. It is so amazingly tough and durable that Busse stands as the only company to have ever put a Lifetime Guarantee on a rubber handle. All Scrap Yard handles are fully textured to supply a slip-resistant purchase in any grip configuration. So, whether you hold the blade in a saber grip, reverse grip, upside down grip, side grip, or whatever which way you are required to hold it for your particular application, you will be assured of having a secure hold.

This is amazing in and of itself.
