Handling thoughts???

People have a tendency to forget that a lock mechanism is a mechanical item and therefore subject to failure. Some of the advertising and tests by writers only reinforce the idea that a folder can be as strong as a fixed blade.

I watched a guy take the tips off of two fingers trying the "spine whack test" because the lock failed. He said he saw an article on the internet about this test and thought that since he was going to Iraq it would be a good way to check out the knife he had just bought.

Part of this lack of knowledge is due to fewer people carrying knives IMHO. Guess we need to ensure the next generation is better educated.

Hmm.

IMO if you grip the rear area of the blade, "choke up" as it is generally called, and the pivot area, applying the pressure to the blade, not the handle, and not the blade and the handle behind the pivot at the same time, then there is no reason to it to fold. -- You are simply pressing the blade into the object being cut, not levering the blade against the handle, around the pivot.

I also say either way is just as safe, if you use the proper care needed for each method... The proper care might be more involved for some ways, but the care needed is individual, not comparative. things just need to be done right(as in safely) specifically to what they are, not right compared(safest) to another way.
