Hard or "soft" leather for strop?

I bought my veg tanned horse hide from Sheridan Leather & Douglas Tools - look them up. I got a very nice piece of leather from them earlier last year and I've made 3-4 strops.

I still have plenty left.

I use an old leather or canvas belt, (or leather sheath when in the boonies) for a strop. Guess I've been using the wrong things for 50 plus years. :(

I think it's the same thing with strops or any knife accessory as a person's individual choice of the knives they get. You get similar discussions of why get a $700 custom when a $200 production will do compared to a $30 knife that is sufficient for most people. If you have that much range as far as the knives themselves, don't you think a similar diversity of preferences / opinions will bleed into discussions of what equipment to sharpen knives?

The ONLY reason to use leather as a strop is for the natural silicates which are smaller and finer than compounds.
It's very important information!
I'm new here, and I have a lot of questions. First, I would like to ask for additional information about these silicates. What is their type, where I can find any scientific descriptions on this subject, I would be grateful.
