Hard use folder recommendations

My top recommendation of what not to buy: any liner lock folder.

To buy: Axis 710 is my fave. Sebenza is an excellent choice but pricey.

Take your pic of these Sebs and Umfaans. The wood inlay or gold coin ones would probably not be particularly suitable for hard use, but the plain ones, or the Rogard (r) coated one (I disavow any knowledge of where this knife came from) MIGHT work.

Don't usually like folders when I can carry a FB but it's your post so here we go. rdangerer made usefula comments which I generally agree with. The large Sebenza is the run away leader. The SERE2K is very ruggedly and well built but a bit pointy. The Wegner is a great blade shape but put it next to a SERE2K and it's like a Mack truck next to a small import pickup, but OK but one way more so.

With all of that said, I'll pick the Sebenza and then say that off all the knives I own, I have done the most outdoors with an old Buck 110 in 440c. That knife had held up better than my body in years of service. If you want to go uptown a little bit, go to Pete's Custom Knife Shop on Buck Knives website and get a 110 with BG42. They are a great bang for the Buck.

Well, as much as I would love to pick up a Sebbie for the trip, I'm afraid my cash is running a bit low at the minute. I will, however, keep that in mind for the future.

I think I will stay away from the liner locks if I can, the guys make a lot of sense. I am probably going to pick up an axis lock for this one, 710 or 730.

I like the idea of a Buck 110 in BG-42, I'm gonna give that consideration before I buy also. I hadn't really thought about that before, but it should be a stout design, has been around long enough to be proven, and gives a few options.

Thanks for the help.

Dieter MOD CQD knife is milled from solid bars of T-6 aluminum with blades of 154cm cryongenically heat treated steel. Dieter's tactical knife features a plunge lock system, secondary safety lock, cord ripper/cuff cutter, Dieter side hilts, a modified spearpoint broadening blade, and military anit-slip grip inserts. Brutally strong, it is available in matte bead blast or black titanium-carbonitride coating, with a plain or partially serrated cutting edge.

My personal favorite!

THAT would DEFINITELY be in the running, IMO.

I have used and enjoyed them all - the sebenza, the sere2000 and the different benchmades - but the Al Mar sere 2000 is without a doubt the stronger folder for the money - maybe the strongest overall...

The liner lock is VERY tough and doesn’t let go - and believe me I tried to make it fail...

It has great steel VG-10, feels VERY strong and reassuring in the hand and I will serve you well.

However - I wouldn't dream of going camping without at least one fixed blade - even a small one - its just so much better then a folder...

Also cheaper...
IMHO

I've waited a bit to respond to this one, until I got a SERE. I had a Seb for a very short period, I didn't like it very much and really was quite disappointed with it. I loved my Military until I got the Wegner. The Wegner could do everything the Military could do and then some.

Now I have the SERE and the Wegner. Both are tremendously strong folders, capable of very hard use. Either is a solid choice for daily carry and tasks assigned in that role.
BTW, I got both of these for less than the price of a Seb, I like them better, and they are both as well suited to the tasks assigned a hard use folder as a Seb.

I would love to see Cliff subject the SERE 2k to the same ... um... use that he subjected the Buck/Strider to. Just to see how long it holds up, and if even longer than the Strider.

get the sere, its damn near bomb proof and sharp as hell. it locks up so solid it may as well be a fixed blade

Sgtmike88, considering the Wegner and the SERE 2K, which will be more suited in your opinion for both everyday and outdoor use? Tactical/self defense usefulness is not a factor now. Grip comfort, cutting versatility, tip strongness (based on tip/edge geometry and blade thickness), 'abusability' (outdoor situations!), easy/minimum knife care are the main requirements.

It's a flip of the coin here. The Weg has better cutting belly, but the SERE has a slightly better blade steel - they both cut like crazy.

My preference for general purpose outdoor use would probably give the edge to the Wegner. The blade width is better suited to field dressing chores and without the SERE's wide handguard, I can choke up on the blade for precise cutting. The Weg's blade also has some handy grooves above the spyderhump which really aid in control cuts - they don't let your thumb slip.

These knives were both designed as hard use folders. The SERE for general purpose tactical, the Wegner for general purpose hunting / outdoors work. They both make great tac knives and they both make great gp knives.

Keep in mind a knife is the least effective and most expensive prybar you'll ever own.

Used to carry an M2 AFCK..but it just got retired by a SERE 2K which has just blown me away.

SERE 2K gets my vote...

I'd strongly second a vote for the Mission MPF. I,ve owned and played with alot of knives and seen nothing more rugged.

I saw thi spast wekeend the Chinook from Spyderco, it is an imressive design that look like a very good hard use blade. Another design I saw and liked a while back was the Lakota Hawk.
