I need a knife that I can take to basic training next year that can be worked pretty hard. I was looking at the Emerson knives and they seem pretty solid from what I can tell. Any suggestions? It needs to be a folding knife and less than 3.5 inches (blade length). Im sure you guys have some good ides. Price range is around $120.

I would say the ZT0500 Mudd knife would fit perfectly with what you are wanting.

Just out of curiosity, what kind of basic training allows you to have a knife?

I would need to know what kind of use under what conditions to be able to suggest something specific, but for general purpose, see the Spyderco Delica 4. Or anything by Spyderco :D

All the major manufacturers have at least a few appropriate models. Emerson is good, I've got a few myself. Benchmade you could go for the mini Griptilian or mini Skirmish, both known for durability under harsh conditions. Kershaw has a few really nice non-assisted openers -- I don't think AO would go over too well and anyway the simpler the mechanism the better.

You might want to take a look at the CRKT M21-02. It has a 3-inch broad, plain-edged spear point blade, tough aluminum frame and the Lake and Walker Knife Safety. If you want to max out your blade, consider the CRKT Thunderbolt. Nice little knife with a sort of aviator motiff and, of course, the LAWKS.

The CRKT M21 series comes in various sizes and configurations. The
-02 and -12 models sport smaller, 3-inch blades. All of these are
available through A.G. Russell.

The CRKT Thunderbolt has a 3.5-inch tanto blade. Some of
the tanto blades sport serrations on the front edge, an innovative
design which I like.

yea, from what I understand they take everything you have on you away when you get on the bus. Dunno why you'd want to take your own knife into basic.

Yeah, basically the only thing I was allowed to keep was my wallet which they searched extensively for contraban pictures and such. Some guys could take in crosses and such if they were small enough. I didn't see my civy clothes for a long time. We weren't even allowed to take knives to combat training. The closest thing we were allowed was multi tools. They confiscated everything else for the duration. We couldn't even have scissors in boot camp. Too many nutjobs trying to off themselves in the head at night. Even had a guy try with a pen rubbed down into a shiv. If you bring a weapon you are opening yourself up to ridicule right from the get go. You wouldn't believe some of the stuff guys brought. Nunchucks, brass knuckles, tasers....unbelievable.

I've read this same thing many times, Lockheed. I recommend stashing some dough and buying yourself a knife after basic as a way of congratulating yourself. Good luck, btw -- and thanks in advance for your service!

First off, good luck!

Assuming you're allowed to carry a knife, why not the Salt1 by Spyderco? It's totally rustproof, minimum maintenance due to time constraints involved with any training or duty, and very functional. It can certainly stand up to any hard use, short of abuse such as prying and etc. It's relatively cheap if lost or stolen, and will hopefully leave over some funds for an even nicer duty knife once you've graduated.

Um, what the guys above said. You won't be taking anything with you into basic training. You won't even be taking the hair on your head. The night you arrive, you will be stripped down, naked as a jaybird, and "given" all new clothes. (you will have to pay for the clothes) The military wants to break you all the way down, and build you back up- essentially from scratch. I don't remember even being able to keep my wallet when I went through basic.

Once you finish basic, just hit the PX, they'll have plenty of knives for you to choose from, and at good prices, too! Have fun! Basic will be one of the most memorable experiences of your life. While you're there, just remember to keep it in perspective. Think of it as a game.

Uhh... Yup, Yup and Yup. No knives in basic. Concentrate on your training, they'll provide everything you need and a whole lot of what ya don't want but you'll appreciate it later. After Basic, use that HUGE paycheck for a knife.

Well Im not doing the basic training you guys are thinking of. Im going to the Air Force Academy next year and we can bring two personal items to basic, not including a picture. Since I carry a knife around everyday, and collect them, I thought why not congratulate myself for getting into the Academy too. lol. From what I have been told by alums from there is that I can have a blade as long as it is not over 3.5 inches, which is also state law.
Thanks guys,

Lockheed

Things must have changed. I went to the Academy also, they even took my watch. But that was back in 1979. Good luck!
