Hard use multi tools?

Swiss tool is the only ones for me.

I have about 4 or 5 pairs.

Leatherman's I can crush in my hands & break the pliers, Swiss-tool I can not.

I've been pretty satisfied with the combo of:
(1) a SAK Huntsman, Farmer, or the new Soldier
(2) a good pair of real pliers
(3) a small thin-bladed Busse (BAD, Cultie, or a .14 GW)
(4) an FBM LE or SAR-8

Numbers 1 and 3 on my person, numbers 2 and 4 in my bag, pack, or trunk.

I might add a small folding shovel or steel trowel and a folding saw if I'm planning on an extended camp. And I always have a GB axe and a sturdy prybar in the glovebox or trunk.

I missed this thread. MM, Multi tools seem to really suck these days from what I have seen. The best I have had was a Leatherman Super Tool I think it is called. It is BIG and HEAVY but really strong. Like you already know a multitool will never replace real tools but that has nothing to do with your question here as you have stated.

I do have to ask though, and maybe you already answered this, but what do you use the most on the multitool?

Get a Victorinox SwissTool. By far the toughest multitool on the planet!

So the discussion about testing your tools and what constitutes abuse reminds me of what happened to me earlier today - trying to disassemble a piece of furniture for the move, I made the mistake of lightly prying on something to try to get it free when it was stuck. I did that prying with the large flat head screwdriver on my leatherman wave.

It snapped like a twig.

If I had done the same thing with my Active Duty, I have no doubt that it would have been no worse for wear. I appreciate that my Busse's are made with hard use in mind, and I don't have to baby them.

I'd like the same attributes in an EDC multi-tool.

I've owned many multi tools, from many companies - sog, schrade, gerber, leatherman, victornox, etc. Some of these are definitely much beefier and tougher than others.

Since you HOGS are the experts on ultra-tough, hard use tools, I thought I would get your insight. What do YOU all think are the toughest multi tools on the planet?

(mods, if this is off topic, feel free to lock it - I asked here rather than other places on BF because I trust the opinions of the Hogs, who are known for a preference for mean, tough, hard use tools, and I know elsewhere on the forums I'm more likely to get the "it's a screwdriver, not a prybar" admonishment more than a useful answer. Also, since Busse doesn't make a multi-tool, I felt it wasn't a discussion of competitors' products, since they don't compete in this product niche.)

simple.....a set of individual tools, like KLIEN or Snap On. Multitools are a COMPROMISE between a REAL TOOL and something in the pocket. You want hard use tools, BUY hard use tools, cuz multitools are NOT hard use.

I personally think the Leatherman Charge XTI is the best multi-tool on the planet. Mine has served me well for many years. But there is no prying tool anywhere on it. I keep a small prybar in my bag for just such an occasion. Right tool for the job I always say.

I agree with these two gentlemen. I own or have owned most multi-tools on the market and the Swisstool is the best I have ever owned. I have one, I gave my wife one, and my father-in-law one. I have two in reserve in case I lose mine. I bought them on clearance for 60% off. I bought all they had, they were without a doubt the best multi-tool purchase I have ever made.

When you compare the Swisstool to other tools on the market it is just flat out nicer. In fact the only multitool I care to purchase now is the old Al Mar multitool, I missed out on them when they were in production.

I am a user of the SOG. It is much sturdier than the Leathermans that I have owned, and broken. I have not used the Swiss Tool. I need to try one out.

I have broken several gerbers and 1 leatherman. I currently carry a SOG, but I think I got a bad one because I have had several problems with it. Pliers are binding and tools are difficult to close. Blades are way too wobbly, so on, so forth. I just ordered one of the swiss tools to see how it does.

I am well aware of "the right tool for the job." However, you can not carry pliers, screwdrivers, etc. all day every day without too much bulk. I work in industrial construction and my multi tool sees a lot of use. Mainly because it is faster to reach to my hip and pull out my "pliers" than it is to climb down and go find some real pliers. Whenever possible, the right tool will be used by me, in a pinch, multi tool it is.

I have a Spirit ordered so I will be trying that out next. I hope its better than the SOG, or I am going back to the Leatherman.

Swisstool.

It is simply the best, IMO. Mine gets the CRAP beat out of it in a rock quarry all the time, every day. Cutting and splicing belting, bending wires, etc etc. Even used it to tap on things occasionally.

It is miles ahead of Gerber in every aspect.

I own no Leathermans. Already been discussed why. I have played with a few, and the ones I did play with seemed pretty chintzy compared to the Vic.

Ernst Emerson posted on GlockTalk asking people what they would want to see in an multitool...so I am sure if that goes through, it will be a tough SOB.

Toughest I've found is the Vic. SwissTool X. It's beefy but I've yet to break the one I bought 5 or 6 years ago.

I've broken several off brand multi tools and one gerber. I have yet to break one of numerous leatherman charge tti, that i have. I have bent the pliers, let me clarify, placed the pivot of the whole tool in a very torqued state while applying very hard force, while trying to pry loose a steel cable wrapped around a trailer axle while coming back from a hunting trip with my leatherman. The leatherman got it loose and the tool was fine afterward, I checked it very carefully for any cracks, chips or visible signs of damage under a bright light. Nothing it was fine. Keep in mind that we had just snapped some china made knock off moments before trying to do the same thing. Was this hard use and probably abuse yes, but we were stuck on a dirt road in the middle of no where and had to make do with what we had to get moving again.

I have leathermans in all our vehicles, in the house and my deer bag, fishing bag. There indispensable if you spend any time hunting and fishing. They have saved a trip and my bacon on more than one occasion. So the leatehrman gets my vote. Which reminds me, going in one morning for a deer hunt in alabama on the long 4 wheeler ride in, Brians 4 wheeler got a large section of hog wire fencing wrapped around his back axle. Took about 5 minutes but I cut, pried and pulled it all out with a leatherman charge, again the tool was fine and hog wire fencing aint light weight material its fairly heavy gauge steel. Like to say later that morning I killed my largest buck to date. Thanks leatherman, I appreciate that.

The leatherman charge is also a favorite of mine, I've beat up several off-branders, and the first type of multi-tool SOG made, The charge has out lasted them all, the only piece I've broken on it is the small precision screw driver and I was being careless.

my vote for the charge
