Hardness testing & decarb

I've also noticed where Peter's heat treats and then grinds a small area on either the tang, or in some more "unique" pieces I've sent them, some where around where the edge would be beveled. They're quite good with determining a decent spot to check. That said, they are also heat treating in a reduced atmosphere where I wouldn't imagine decarb or scale is really an issue. Seems like they just want to be thorough, or would a little bit of oxidation from tempering make a difference?
