I remember when Phill's blades were something to own. I don't see that much of an interest today in hie blades. Is the fire dying! Thanks.

i don't know much about them but the prices seem high, especially in this economy. take a look at nordic knives website, they have quite a few for sale.

He makes good knives, but for me they are overpriced. I think part of his pricing is in the name he has built, but I just don't see good value in his knives. There are lots of folks that disagree with me on this, and I certainly don't think that my opinion means more than theirs. If you like his knives, and don't think they are overpriced, then buy them.

Ha! Time for the Hartsfield wars to begin, again. I think everyone knows where I stand. Seems they continue to sell and there is constant interest or we wouldn't see these threads.

Overpriced is something everyone needs to reconcile for themselves. Nobody forces anyone to buy one. To my way of thinking most knives are overpriced, that doesn't stop me from buying!

I do think that interest has dropped off from the peak years, as I remember them. But a lot has changed and there are hundreds of new makers.

Phill has always been a gentleman and he will make whatever configuration you want in one of his knives. A truly gifted designer and maker, IMHO.

Win

I just got some popcorn!

The Hartsfield blades cost what they cost and are worth it. They may look simple like something some average joe (like me) could make in their garage, but where he differs from most makers that make "TOOLS DESIGNED TO BE USED" is his heat treatment. Those suckers are tough as nails and Phill stands behind every blade he makes. I hear that he'll even replace one time an intentionally broken blade. If the knife should ever fail you, he will fix it immediately (to the original owner for sure). Will probably be a charge to a second owner.

Not everyone's cup of tea. People say the finish is bad or whatever, but that's not the man's concern really. He makes a blade that you could depend your life on and in the process tries to make it as beautiful as he possibly can. One can pay $5000.00 for a knife, but if it's a pretty and can't do what it was designed to do, what a waste of money.

Remember Punks---No Flame-War!! I am just curious about Phills blades at this time, 2008. Thank you.

I have never owned one , have handled quite a few , fit & finish never impressed me for the price's they fetch , but as Win said , Nobody forces anyone to buy em for those prices.
The one's I have handled were indeed very sharp .

but where he differs from most makers that make "TOOLS DESIGNED TO BE USED" is his heat treatment.
I seriously doubt that the reason his knives command such a premium is that his heat treat is better than most makers , on par with most makers , but I can't see how someone can claim his to be better.

I like alot of different styles of knives and can apreciate all types of knives from art knives to tactical blades but most of all I can apreciate good user knives. I very much like the man and his work. Although some are not the prettiest knives I have seen they have a functional beauty that I apreciate

Without going into the flame war, I think that (1) the fact that there is a controversy (whoever is right) and (2) the fact that Nordic has had so many pieces available in the last year or so, probably impacted the desireability.

heat treatment plus his method for sharpening (belt moving slowly and "backwards", I believe)...

I have one..love it...would definitely buy more.

I'm sure the direction of the belt makes it somehow superior:rolleyes:

I love his designs and the functionality of them. But when I can get a knife that will serve me as well of a fraction of this price I would have to pick that road. Being in highschool limits knife spending just a little bit...... :)

That's exactly why I went in the direction of Leu Custom. And...his blades perform just as well.

3M---Good move. I have a Yoroi Toshi INCOMING!! :0
Make sure you Post which Leu you get.

It won't be anytime soon my friend. :)

I just got a Krein Woodcarver and a David Farmer Nessmuk. Later this year I have a custom from Eddie White coming to celebrate my Eagle Scout rank. Early next year I have more plans with Tom Krein and possibly with Michael Burch as well. I am a busy kid! :D
