Has Anybody Tried the Sterile Yankauer Suction Tips?

Yeah, I have. I went through at least a hundred of them, suctioning mucus from Kim's trach tube in the first year after her hit and run. The hospital staff and then the nursing home staff could not be depended upon to keep her properly suctioned out, so I did it. Even learned how to remove the inner trach tube and clean it, feed her and give her meds though her stomach tube, etc. The last four years have been very educational! She has come such a long way. All I have to do any more is occasionally perform the Heimlich, as she still gets choked occasionally when eating. I am looking forward to the day when I will be useless.:D

I don't really know if the Yankauers were the Busse ones or not, but they did indeed suck!:D

i had to do the hindlick maneuver on vicki once, it was fairly easy to do.

I'm experienced at the Heimlich, but if any of you Hogs ever need me to perform the hindlick maneuver, I'm afraid that you are gonna die.

Hi Mike, good to hear the Mrs is doing better with your TLC

Yes, I use "yanker" quite often when I work in the hospital setting, mostly for pediatric respiratory patients, connect the "yanker" to the "sucker" (wall suction machine) and you can clean up many nasty body fluid that get stuck :barf:  OK I'll stop from here.

OTOH, it's no more than soft plastic tubing. One accidentally ;) find its way into my BOB, good for drinking, siphoning gasoline etc.

No experience with the loafers :)

I sprained my "yanker" once. Oh, what a sad time that was.

Not the Mrs., 25 year old daughter. But thanks for the kind words.

KAAK, I will get Kim on line in the morning and let her tell you how she is doing. I will say, though, for those who met her at Blade the last three years, you are in for a shock when you see her again. She was dismissed from speech therapy fall of 2004 because, "with her lack of progress and no real hope for improvement, we feel that it would be unethical for us to continue treating her." They also felt that the nerve damage was simply too great to overcome. She and I have continued on our own, trying to come up with creative ways to improve her speech. For example, when we are out in the car, we will have "yell practice", seeing how loud she can scream. Since Blade this year, and really in just the last two months, she has had a sudden, dramatic improvement. She now speaks in phrases and sentences rather than single words, and can clearly (although slowly) converse with strangers. I am beginning to hope that, if we can ever overcome the choking problem, she may be able to live semi-independently in the future.

Sorry about the thread hijack, by the way.
