Knowing that it may not be available again one day when you want/need another? Or is that just silly? :)

Yes. But not with a pricey knife. Kershaw leeks are something I just bought cause I saw one at Menard's, and figured mine was getting too beat up. Bought so many, have two or three on hand. Same goes for scallions. Actually have like 4 or 5 on hand.

Bought a zt last week on here. Been carrying it ever since.

Edit: but yea, my repurchasing of the kershaws had nothing to do with me worrying about it not be around later.

Edit2: just saw the subforum this is posted in. They always overlook the area im in when using tapatalk

Yes. Old Timer, USA made, large stockman 8OT. I'd rather not say how many I have, let's just say "several."

Never. As nice as some knives are, I've yet to come across one that was so so perfect in design, so flawless in execution, that I felt the desire to grab another exactly like it. There's always some detail I'd change. It could be size, steel, handle material, or blade grind or profile. It could even be something as simple as the swedging. That being the case, I'd rather have another knife, even if it is just slightly different.

ix-Nay.
The Leek is a pretty thing, but Traditional it is not. Please leave it at the door.

The idea has tempted me to buy a double of a GEC I really enjoy but as there are so many different variations..I can't justify that extra cost just to have one lying around. That being said, I do have New in Tube knives still around waiting to be used.

If it is a knife that really floats your boat, one that you've been hunting for ages for..one that hasn't been made in some time. By all means. :D

I've done it a couple of times. One example is the Buck 703. I carried one in the mid 80's to early 90's and I loved that knife. It was my one and only knife for several years. Decades later when I officially became a knife knut I searched out another one just in case they all disappeared. I now own three of them. Each from a different year of production but essentially the same otherwise.

Ironically, I don't carry them but I do enjoy owning them. I should stick one in my pocket.

I have bought exact doubles in a couple of instances, but not for the reason listed in the OP.

Oh yes. I purchased a number of spare Schrade and Camillus knives when the factories closed down. I've also purchased a spare Remington R-4, in case mine ever gets lost.

Sure. One as a daily user with a nice patina, and the other all minty. 1970 ten-dot Case peanuts:

Unfortunately for my bank account, yes I have. Multiples in some cases for models I feel may be discontinued or limited runs that I'm fond of. Cost does come into play when speaking about customs or like the Case/Bose models for instance.

Every now and then I have. Reasons might be that I like the knife so well that I get another for a later special occasion gift or find another that has richer bone color, etc.

One time I did this because I wanted one to put one up and the other one to be a user knife. For the reasons stated, it was not silly to me. :)

Y'all are crazy. Is it the possibility of loss? Or do you really work your knives that hard that you're wearing them out? With stropping and careful sharpening the rate of wear on my knives is so small it's infinitesimal. Even my primary carry should last the rest of my life and then some.

not crazy. some of my repeats I got to give as gifts. Some have different handle materials, for a little variety. I expect all my knives, from the Opinel, Kudu/Eland, Rough Riders, to the Bucks (the highest on the totum pole I can afford) and gifted to me Case and Ulster, to out last me.

I guess it's really like buying an insurance policy, right? I have on occasion bought doubles in shoes/boots, knowing I would wear the first pair down in a few years and go to buy it again only to discover it's discontinued (which has happened to me on many occasions). But I've not done it with a knife until now. And yes, these knives are built to last a lifetime in theory, but I have lost my favorite knife before and I have found it handy to have a spare in the car or in my briefcase. There are lots of reasons to want a few of the same thing, probably the least of which is that it gets used so much, it wears down - in the case of a knife.

Having said all that, I have had it backfire on me too in that by the time I get around to needing the double for whatever reason, my tastes and preferences have changed and I'm not into it anymore. And the opposite has also been true...even after going through the doubles, I find I need a triple and they are nowhere to be found.

Have 2 Kabar 1152's. If see a deal on another one, will get another. Have many multiples of my favorite knives.
