Has anyone bought doubles of a TRADITIONAL knife you love?

I've been known to buy 3 or 4 of a pattern before I think I have enough.
When does collecting cross the line into hoarding?

When you have four 897uh stockman, 9 Case peanuts, 5 Vic cadets and 11 Vic classics you might be a hoarder (but I'm not, really)

Or when you have 50 GEC #53 Cuban stockmans! But only a pair of true duplicates.

Primble's post reminded me of my Rough Rider Eureka Stockman fettish. I have one of each of the four handle varieties, but then bought another four of the yellow comp version for gifts. It's just one of the most pleasing little knives to carry and use at 3⅜" closed, and only around $10 apiece.

LOL!!! Same here, but with the Wenger Standard Issue. When the SI's retirement was announced, I bought a bunch of them.

I may also have 4 or 5 Vic Soldiers. [emoji12]

Sounds like a good plan to me... I also stocked up :o :D

My first knife was a red handled Wenger knife with a bail so the bail on the Standard Issue is somewhat nostalgic for me.

Not fancy or rare, but I bought one and really liked it...so I bought a second one

I just received a lightly used CSC Cannitler today and if I can find a second, or third, I'll be all over it/them as well :D

Thank you! I did the same exact thing with this same exact knife! It's just so delicious, I want to eat it! Might be a bit too crunchy and hard to digest though. :p

Ok, so now I definitely feel better! I've learned today that I'm a hoarder and others have the exact same affliction! This is VERY good news!

And btw...next year these will likely be much harder to come by. Try finding the spear blade version with long pull from 2012!

Yeah, I have two Tidioute melon whittlers in smooth goldenrod bone and two in jigged second cut stag.

And another in pumpkin patch acrylic, but I don't have a twin for it...yet.

I bought 3 exact doubles. One pair was a mistake - I had ordered a knife from a dealer, thought it was out of stock since I never got a ship notice from them, ordered the same knife from a second dealer, then the first one showed up as well as the second one. It worked out well because I used one of them to experiment with dyeing the bone handles, and it turned out great, plus I still had another original condition knife.

The other two were intentional - I had a Case Small Texas Jack and Peanut in CV steel. I wanted to do some experimentation with patinas but didn't want to mess up my two favorite knives, so I bought a second of each as lab rats. I ended up gifting the second Peanut to a friend (still NIB) and did play with various patina techniques on the Texas Jack.

Funny thing, it's the patina experiment that I frequently carry, and the one I had intended to protect from abuse sits unused in the box. Part of the experiment was learning that I could polish off a patina whenever I wanted so there was no real need to have multiple knives, but I didn't know that at the time.

Now I do have a number of variations on a theme - like multiples of the same pattern, but always in a different steel, handle material, blade configuration, or some combo of those.

Oh - I forgot! I have two Victorinox Bantams in silver Alox. I bought two specifically because they are no longer sold in the US so I wanted to ensure I had a spare in case I ever lost the one I use and couldn't replace it.

I have found the rough rider large congress to be one of my favorite porch whittling knives. Especially the smooth tobacco bone. I have four of them plus several others in different handle materials. At $12 a pop, I can leave one in my pack, glove box, wherever and have no need of tracking one down when I'm ready to carve. I also have duplicates of several queens, case, etc...but those are for my seven year old son who is still learning the responsibility and value of a good knife.

Yes, the quest for knowledge. Like new drug testing - I needed a control group that I didn't dip into boiling vinegar. If I ever invite you to be in one of my experiments, you should probably ask to be in the control group. :)

Knowing that it may not be available again one day when you want/need another? Or is that just silly? :)

The closest I have come to "exact doubles" is I have a couple of Buck 301's.
►Got one with black covers and flat ground blades from the '90's.
►Got one with black covers and "Edge 2000" super hollow ground blades. (Their current grind)
►Got one with yellow covers, because I like yellow covers. They make the knife easy to find if I lay it down outside.

I also got two Case CV Sowbelly knives. One in Yellow Delrin. The other in Chestnut bone.

I don't really consider these "duplicates", because I don't consider them interchangeable.

On a side note. Some poster was saying he got taught a lesson about buying duplicates because the clipped knife he was carrying departed ways from him. You do realize that "clips failure" is not something which happens when you carry a traditional? Clip can't fail if the knife don't got one.

I haven't. But I love my GEC #21 so much, I'm often tempted to pick up his little brother the #71. I also have an Opinel in 6 and 8, so I guess my question is, do different sizes count?

Not silly at all, but I do it on a case-by-case basis ;)

I have a lot of Blurs I don't use, and I gave away a few that were dupes. I loved the ZT 0801 and almost bought another, but decided I wanted a ZT 0808 more rather than another knife I already have, etc...

Overall I'd rather have something different. Two is one and all that, but I don't think it has to apply to knives. Sometimes a knife is a knife, even if it is a little different - still cuts stuff.

OK that does it. Too many references to modern knives. I tried a subtle hint earlier. Apparently it was too subtle.

I have now edited the title to include the word "TRADITIONAL".
