Has anyone bought doubles of a TRADITIONAL knife you love?

not crazy. some of my repeats I got to give as gifts. Some have different handle materials, for a little variety. I expect all my knives, from the Opinel, Kudu/Eland, Rough Riders, to the Bucks (the highest on the totum pole I can afford) and gifted to me Case and Ulster, to out last me.

Not exactly a double then is it?

I guess it's really like buying an insurance policy, right? I have on occasion bought doubles in shoes/boots, knowing I would wear the first pair down in a few years and go to buy it again only to discover it's discontinued (which has happened to me on many occasions). But I've not done it with a knife until now. And yes, these knives are built to last a lifetime in theory, but I have lost my favorite knife before and I have found it handy to have a spare in the car or in my briefcase. There are lots of reasons to want a few of the same thing, probably the least of which is that it gets used so much, it wears down - in the case of a knife.

Lol.... Shoes are one thing. I've worn out many a pair. But knives are the very definition of a durable good.

I used to carry my favorite pocket knife with me every day. I even had it clipped to my pant pocket. One day it must have gotten caught on something and fallen off. Upon needing it, I discovered it was gone. I retraced my steps of the entire day pretty much and I called places to see if anyone had turned it in. Nope, it was gone. I figured...I can just order another one...nope, turns out they stopped making it years earlier. I was so used to that particular model knife, so comfortable with it. I wish I had ordered doubles and had another tucked away somewhere...nope, never occurred to me to buy doubles of a knife, which is the very definition of a durable good.

I consider the same make and model with different handle materials to be the same knife. And if you look through the forum, you'll see lots of people have bought duplicates that vary only in the handle material. It's a huge part of the industry. Some manufacturers like Victorinox and Case rely on customers buying duplicates of the same knife with different handle colors, logos, or materials.

I have also bought duplicates of the same knife with the same handle material. It's nice to have a backup if a favorite knife is damaged or lost. Some folks just collect knives and don't use them. Then there's not really a big risk of loss or damage so I'd imagine that duplicates aren't really necessary.

I have a few gec 66's in 3 different variations. And I believe I'm up to 12 sak pioneers and 6 farmers.

I'd use the term variation, not duplicate or double, to describe the phenomenon you mentioned. But I guess we've strayed from the OP and are getting into semantics now.

Christian, I hadn't read through the thread until after I made my post. We both present a slightly different view but I'm not sure that one is right and one is wrong. I think it's a matter of perspective. I may not have chosen the best words. The manufacturers would certainly like us to think that a blue knife is different than red knife. To some extent the industry depends on it.

Knowing that it may not be available again one day when you want/need another? Or is that just silly? :)

Yep ... single clip blade Charlows. One will last a lifetime, but a couple more have been added since this pic.

I bought four of exactly the same knife, minor difference of tang stamp. The knife? Uncle Henry 897uh.

I've had the first one for 30 years (it was a free replacement of the original that was lost). I guess the loss made me paranoid about losing another. Schrade USA is not around anymore, but my 30 year old knife is and as Christian said - not much wear. I carried it as my main knife for at least 10 years straight and occasionally since. Well made and well cared for knives last a long time.

I'll eventually get rid of the other three or they'll be part of my estate. It makes me content to know I'll always have one (unless the house burns down - maybe I should put one in the safe deposit box!).

I have and have had too much disposable income to worry about having too many knives.

John, if you need to get rid of any of those TC clips, let me know! :)

I have 3 Case 6292s in various colors and handle materials. The Texas Jack is by far my favorite pattern.

As John (Chief) has shown above, if there is a pattern I collect, then I have many multiples of the knife with different covers. But of exact copies, I only have two. Both are GEC #53 Cubans, which I collect, and I have both a stainless and a carbon steel pair, one safe queen for the collection, and one user. Here is the pair of ram horn variants in 1095.

Same but not the same. I love semantics. :D

I won't included the ones I have sold.

When I first joined the forum I read several times to buy one to use and one to save. When I collected I thought of doing that, but didn't have the funds with so many choices out there to do that.

Only recently have I started buying two of the same, but not the same. I hope to hand these down, one for each child.

While your Soldiers may be functionally identical to one another they are not the same. Ask any collector. Or any parent whose daughter has to settle for a blue sleeping bag because the store ran out of pink ones.

Every now and then I have. Reasons might be that I like the knife so well that I get another for a later special occasion gift or find another that has richer bone color, etc.

One time I did this because I wanted one to put one up and the other one to be a user knife. For the reasons stated, it was not silly to me. :)

Primble - Very well stated my friend:) I have multiples of a lot of my knives. Some of my older Case knives I may have 3 of a pattern that I bought out of the same Pumpkin Box.
That is what is known as A "Knife 401K":D:eek::D If I had had more money when I was younger my "Knife 401K" would have a wee bit larger :D

I also have a few Schrade 897uh, as well as variants. Bought several as that knife is the perfect pattern for me - apparently one of the top selling stockmans ever....

LOL Very small differences are important to children and collectors (myself included) and both will throw tantrums over them. :D

BRL said something like.. small variations in common knives are often valued much more than knives that are truly rare. I wish I had saved the link to the discussion. It was a good one.

I have enough Victorinox Alox Soldier knives to start my own army. ;)
LOL!!! Same here, but with the Wenger Standard Issue. When the SI's retirement was announced, I bought a bunch of them.

I may also have 4 or 5 Vic Soldiers. [emoji12]
