Has anyone ever had a defective Swiss Army Knife?

Never had any trouble with the few ive had. But I will say this, its my most lost/stolen knife. Every Vic ive ever had was either lost or stolen or "borrowed" etc. I dont have a single one despite buying several over the years! One disappeared last year under very mysterious circumstances.

Yes, also the most confiscated at airports.

About 20 years ago, a friend was bemoaning how many SAKs he'd had borrowed/stolen. All of them had red covers. He bought a Climber with blue covers, and the last I heard, he still had it

Have to say, this is a very old thread, I never expected to see again :D

Yeah, and I remember when it was new like it was yesterday.

Nope. Had at least a dozen Classic SD SAC's, and never an issue with any of them. I give away many, and no one complains.

I’ve had/have boatloads of them and never an issue. I always think about that when somebody attempts to explain away crappy craftsmanship or lackluster QC by saying something like “it’s a good enough knife for the price”.
Seems like Victorinox gets it right and a pioneer still costs 35-40 dollars.
Must be the quality enhancing effect of the scenic views and those pretty cows grazing outside the factory…

Yes, same here Jer! :D I've just read through it. It's a shame the pics have been lost from the early posts, and some of the text scrambled, but I'd forgotten what an interesting discussion we had. Sad that many of those once regular posters don't visit anymore, but it was nice to look back and remember them :)

Thinking about it, I have to change my answer. I'd forgotten that one of the Signatures that came with a Huntsman back around Christmas, 2005, or so, had a chipped edge on the pen blade. I was able to sharpen it out without making the pen blade into a toothpick or changing the profile ... too much.

I enjoyed watching this 'how it's made' type video online that shows the manufacturing of SAKs by Victorinox.
It's fascinating to see how much they have mechanized the process... I mean, there is MINIMAL hands on anything in having them made.
Basically, people just feed machines. They have almost eliminated any chance of human error.
While that has achieved a consistently almost perfect product line, the lack of their having any real "hands on craftsmanship", is the reason I only own a handful of SAKs. If I was to grade them for being a quality made tool, I would give them an A+.
But, the grading I'd give them for being a hand crafted item?... Well, I would have to say "not applicable"
That, of course, is only based on their modern offerings, since their much older stuff was not only well made, but also hand crafted 😊
