Has This Been Suggested?

OK, khukuri designers, I still don't have any really bright ideas for a scabbard...and all suggestions are welcome. Blackdog?

But I feel like this idea Chris has for the multi-rig has great potential. If no sheath revelation is ever presented here, a version of traditional wood-and-leather would do just fine. The placement of the knives is up for grabs. Chris has an interesting way to put the knives in order of biggest to smallest, and it seems very good. The Nepali design puts the khukiri a little farther away, and keeps the handle from digging into the carrier's side or back. But I don't know if this is really an issue, as the only big knives I've worn are GH khukuris.

Do we want to keep the kothi, the brass scabbard tip? (Craig is going to have us speaking just enough Nepali to be dangerous) How about a provision in the end of the sheath for a tie? One could even get inventive and have a blunt kothi with a hole or 2 in it.

Being a lefty I've had to rotate scabbards in the frog so the k&c are on the outside and the draw is much less comfortable. I really like this Idea though! my vote would be for a WWII style with the companion knife slightly shorter than the blade (about 9-10")so the handles don't interfere with each other and the bottom of the scabbard isn't too "blockish". I think a skinning type knife would be very useful. I've also been dreaming of a metal match firestarter with a little wood handle on it!

I've been thinking about the piggy-back sheath idea and have tried to come up with an idea for a rig to carry dual fixed blades. But, I keep going back to the Gerber sheath for some reason. It's such a simple, sturdy and lightweight design. Why not have a Gerber type affair with a pouch that would accomodate both a large khukuri and a large folder? Better yet, the length of the Khukuri sheath would allow room for two pouches, one for a folder and another for anything from matches to fishing line to 100 feet of paracord.

I would like my smaller blade to be either a drop point or a spear point design. A 3" to 4" blade is probably the most useful for normal utility chores and with the newer locking systems available today they're nearly as tough as a fixed blade in a smaller package. There are probably several hundred folders on the market today with blade lengths from 3 to 4" that would fill the gap between the Khukuri and the karda.

I tried the pouch on my Gerber rig and it holds every folder I have with no problem, including my CRKT large KFF which is one BIG folding knife. Here's another pic of the Gerber sheath with a 3 1/2 " folder in the pouch.

Blackdog, this is such a good idea that I don't even know which I like more. On one hand, we have a somewhat traditional inspiration, but yet aren't we gradually trending toward something more innovative and versatile?

There are lots of great folders out there to suit everybody. And the notion of a place to stash fishing line, metal match and tinder, or whatever just might make the rig work for all of us and most any situation.

Can we develop this concept some more? (all forumites, Chris S., ArchAngel, Blackdog?)

This is great idea. I like the way you guys think! Who will make the sheaths? The sarkis or will this be a special project? I'd rather it be another special project but is it feasable? How about a khukuri with a puukko going piggyback? I prefer fixed blades (but I do love my CRKT KFF- I wish they would make one with upgraded steel!).

Happy Holidays

I think you guys are woking on a great idea. I tend to lean towards the idea of a Kydex sheath with a pouch for a folder. I get deployed alot and find that the only two blades I need are one of my khukuris and my Emerson folder. The only problem is that I have never seen a Kydex sheath for a blade as big as a khukuri or a curved blade.

My Cold Steel comes in a nylon sheath. If you have seen a kydex sheath for it please let me know.

Grimas go to the cold steel website. There's somewhere where they sell the concealex sheath by themselves but I can't remember where. Someone said these Cold Steel sheaths fit the WWII's.

Remember this? I just can't seem to get this thread off my mind. I'm not discounting any of the previous ideas, but opening up another can of worms.

If we're thinking of the #2 knife as anybody's folder of choice, maybe the sarkis could fashion a pouch for it attatched to a customized SN1-style frog! We could decide the dimensions and send them the material (if leather is out) or even pre-made pocket(s). Those guys might get a kick out of our using a Velcro closure on the flap! And Blackdog's idea of a double pocket for fishing line, para cord, etc., works here, too.

An advantage of having the pouch on the frog is that it can be shifted for lefties or replaced if desired.

Comments? The light's on, but it's mighty dim....Dan

An afterthought: What about 2 elongated rectangular pockets, to be positioned 1 on each edge of the scabbard? This could keep the profile narrow, and snag less on brush when worn on the belt.

Hi Dan,
Good to see this topic back up to the top.
I like the dual pocket idea. Having it attached to the frog is a good idea also. That makes the manufacturing aspect fairly simple, and makes it removable, to switch out with a standard fitted frog.
I have been waiting with excitement for the arrival of the Ken Onion Khuk. I have been thinking that when I get mine, I may have Terry Sisco make a piggyback sheath for my Reiger and Onion as a combo. That was sort of what I had envisioned in my minds eye when this topic came up. This will be a little larger than was discussed, but it would be a way to see the idea up front.
Maybe this setup with a frog with pockets on the edges? When I am done, it will way more than I do. I will need to hire a young backed person to carry it for me. Or get in better shape. Must go back to work. Talk to you all soon.

Greetings, ArchAngel. Yes, Chris S. got us going on a good thing here, didn't he? (hope he comes back to get us straight!) Like I sez, all these ideas are good, and I don't want to edit out anybody's designs. Instead, I hope folks will proceed with whatever suits them and see what comes of it. We may even get to the point of taking specific designs to start new threads.

It looks like some categories are emerging here: one with 2 fixed blades, and another with one khukuri and pockets for a folder and some light gear. I think they're BOTH great ideas, and don't want to abort one in favor of the other. So I hope you'll proceed with the first direction, or as you like.

Your Rieger/Onion idea is a fine working example, and I hope you do it and let us know where it leads you. The weight issue is also on my mind. Do you ever carry a small pack or water bag that you could strap it onto? (I have this uneasy vision of a heavy belt rig causing a "drop-trou" situation with witnesses!) As an aside, there is a nifty little rig that Ragweed carries. It's a Leuku/Puukko piggyback combo. [www.ragweedforge.com/FinnishKnifeCatalog.html] (thanks to DD for the link)

As for me, I'll explore Blackdog's idea some more. This might be a good excuse for me to get a good folder. Such a personal sacrifice to further khukuri research(?!)....Dan

Guys: I haven't forgotten about this project. But we're still trying to get the WWIII finished and also get some work done on the Ken Onion Khukuri (which Lalit and TB have pictures of as we speak).

Hi again Dan,
The more I think about the two pocket idea, the more I like it. If these pockets were atached to a frog so they were on the leading and trailing edges of the sheath as you mentioned, this would keep profile down to a minimum and look really nice.
This could almost be a seperate manufacture item, sold as an accessory to all Khukhuri owners to use on their present favorite Khuks. Make it easily adjustable and there we go with a great new addition to our regular carry systems. DMT in one pocket and good folder in the other? The possibilites are endless. I like it! Talk to you all later.
