Hatchet Jack

Well, I certainly hope you keep one around long enough for me to check it out. It's an extremely attractive and very timely design. It captures the current "look" perfectly and I love it!

Great photo too ^^^^. kinda gives a new take to the name "Rainbow Warrior" heh...

Congratulations on making your design a reality. Looks like a very handy blade. I do have similar questions to Will's - especially about the two holes in the blade - so I will look forward to your future comments.

Stuart, you're the best! Thanks so much :)

As I understand it, this one will be going to the Gathering;

Hello Lorien!

Another great project, mate! Would sure love to handle one as well! (will have to see if there are still some left... ;) )

Much looking forward to your action shots as well! :)

All the best,
Alex

I'm typically not a big fan of flat-stock hatchets but this is an excellent design and well-executed final product. Well done all around.

What a great way to start a weekend! Man, this week- when it rains it pours :)
I'm looking forward to getting out into the bush this weekend for a little testing. There are questions that need answered!

Anxious for this

You gonna throw um ?

Was just out throwing Hawks yesterday ....... Love it

You gonna throw um ?

Funny you should ask!

After tonight, it's definitely time for a new target! Might be I harvest one this weekend. I only threw from a +/- 10' distance tonight. Once I figured things out, which took 4 or 5 throws, I was able to stick consistent throws. I'm looking forward to moving downrange, as the accuracy for this chunky hatchet is pretty incredible. Pretty intuitive thrower, but I did have that in mind when I designed it. Works as planned, it seems. I'll be seeking stumps in the forest this weekend and might get some video footy.

I received two of these huntsman's hatchets today. The other one was picked up by a friend of mine who is big into hunting, and he was telling me how he's planning to use Hatchet Jack this spring for his bear hunt. If he gets his tag, he's planning on using this hatchet exclusively to prep the carcass on site and hike it out. He bought a Ryan Weeks knife awhile ago, of my HUK pattern, that performed WELL beyond his expectations. He's pretty intense when it comes to hunting, likes to be way way out there, remote as possible, and brings everything back by foot. High stress job contributes to the need to flee civilization and live like a man, I guess. I asked him if he'd take some in use pics, so there should be some gore available for you to enjoy down the road.

Thanks everyone for the kind words, just found this thread

Lorien, I really appreciate you getting ahold of me and trusting me with this build... I will be honest when they showed up in the mail I was a little un-sure about how they would perform. I have owned a few small axes (Hawks and Bag Axes) in the past and was not impressed with how they performed in the real world (I have no use or want for Tactical Hawks). I felt a large camp knife or a full size hatchet was a better choice, as my grandfather would say "Put that wrench down and go find a hammer, get the right tool for the job... Boy"

After the heat treat I made a custom duct tape handle and went to town on some unsuspecting 2x4's and logs around the house, chips were flying and I may have even made some strange vocalizations (So says my wife). All a testament to Lorien's design, intuition and the quality A2 Steel. IMO this is the perfect Hunters hatchet, If I had to break down a moose this is what I would want. I do not get one of these, but I will have one in the future so that I can take it with me in the mtns.

I also look forward to the video Lorien

Nice looking hatchet there, crazy but not cuckoo!

Sunday morning, I realized that if I wanted to get this hatchet into the woods, I had better figure out a way to carry it safely.
What follows is some of the worst leatherwork you'll ever see, but it took less than 2 hours and it got me on the trail.
Although this is belly leather, of the worst quality, the sheath functions very nicely- both on the pack and on the belt.
I consider it a successful prototype, and I'll include it with this test piece when it comes time to sell it. I'll make another one with more care and better materials for my next hatchet, which will be more of a collector piece.

This past weekend was interesting, weather-wise.
Sunday, it poured, all day. I mean, it was seriously wet!
Monday, beautiful! Warm, sunny, just fantastic.
