This is for the hatchet users out there. What are your feelings about full tang hatchets? I'm not really a hatchet kind of guy but since making and using one, it is really growing on me. I own some of the others, Wetterlings, Estwing and my old Boy Scout Plumb but always preferred a large blade over a hatchet. One thing I've found with the full tang is overall balance is better plus it can be batoned easier if that would become an option. It also seems to split better because of the thinner head. As far as being too heavy, this was a concern for me but it is actually only 5 or 6 oz. heavier then my Wetterlings.
I really like JK's version and I think G.L. Drew makes one also. This is my version, the Gosshawk. I'm not sure if these will become a sought after item, but they are fun to work on and use. It's 5/16" thick A2 steel.

That looks real nice  Ever since I got an old style Buck hatchet years ago I`ve been a fan.

I've no experience of them but I'd heard that thing about vibration.

I think they could be something that really came into their own as a big butcher tool that also does well on wood. Although I've never butchered anything of any significance with a hatchet either so my opinion isn't worth a great deal.

Real Nice Work on the Hatchet, Sure Is a Beauty ! The one GL Drew make's Is shorter and has an ULU Skinner type Head Short & compact made for Skinning & Cutting Meat & Bone, Thank's for sharing the picture,

Nice looking hatchet Scott, I love them full tang hatchets and use the one I made quite. For a light weight hatchet I think they are to cool LOL.
Oh never had any of that vibration stuff either. Let us know if you do though Scott.
Every one is different and work diffferently with hand tools.

Thanks for the imput guys. I think there are advantages/disadvantages to both types. I guess these full tang hatchets are like most other equipment, some will like them others won't.

Out of curiosity I just went out and did a side by side comparison of vibration between this one and a wood handle hatchet. I didn't feel any noticable difference as far as vibration.

When I tested mine against my Wetterlings and Fiskar, I did not notice any vibration.

Was going to ask you that John, thanks for the reply. I really like your version.
Bryan, your hatchet looks great too. I hope to put mine to use this fall as a skinner.

Just curious: Can you tell us the overall length, length of cutting edge, and weight?

It looks great---both strong and stylish.
