Hatchets

Scott, thanks, I tell ya by the look of your hatchet head it will do just fine as a skinner. Last Dec. My nephew was home and we butchered a young steer and he used the first little hatchet I made and he could not believe how well a hatchet was able to skin with. Now cutting around the butt hole is not the easyest. but for pretty much the rest of the skinning a hatchet works just fine.

Yea as to the vibrations I never had any of that either and the several that I have sold to others ( one guy does landscaping and uses his real regular ) have never told me that they felt vibration.
Good thing you went out and tried it yourself Scott, to test for vibration that is.
Only a few more months till hunting season LOL.

I ment to add this pic of a hatchet that I made up for a customer who wanted a pointy end also LOL. Now this one might not have a probelm skinning around the butt hole of your Deer, bear Steer etc. LOL

since I did not get to try it out I really do not know but I think it would work just fine for that part of skinning too.

Dang Scott, now that you said that you are wanting to try it out for skinning I can hardly wait ( that will be several months of waiting now LOL) to hear back on how your hatchet does LOL

Keep us posted will ya.:D

Just curious: Can you tell us the overall length, length of cutting edge, and weight?

It looks great---both strong and stylish.

DancesWithKnives

Overall it is 11", it has a 4" head from pole to edge, 3" cutting edge. The handle is 1 1/4" wide and tapers to 1 1/8" just below the head. Thickness is 5/16" A2 steel. I did the grind the same as my knives, flat grind first then convex, leaving it thicker behind the edge for added strength but brought it to a true convex zero edge. Typical of Wetterlings and Gransfor. It did great making fuzzies and getting curls off of seasoned hardwood.

Mick, to answer your question, I found that if you lay your thumb along the spine just behind the pole, you can get better leverage and control for fine work. If you full grip it, it is not as comfortable.

Here's the sheath I'm going to make for it. Belt or pack carry and a ring can be added to the belt loop for adding a shoulder strap.
