Have people reacted to your knife with shock or fear?

We have no lack of guns here really. There's plenty.
And lots of people get stabbed in the States.

No offense but knife stabbings in public places in the states is rare. Like I said I can't remember any where I live. Lots of shootings in public though, sadly. Canada and the usa are like brothers. Our cultures and backgrounds, histories are very similar, but there are vast differences as well. Same could be said about each state in the usa as well. Each state is like its own country in a way. We are a nation due to our union. In the end canada is a very great, but very different place from where I live and here stabbings in public places are an extreme rarity.

I guess it also depends on how public we're talking.
Most stabbings (like most shootings) are done in the home here, as well as in the States as far as I know.
And the media always likes to publicize shootings more. They just seem to get people going more, I guess.

idk...I'd say I hear a pretty good amount of reports of stabbings. Even had a guy stabbed right outside my store here in one of downtown Boston's busiest streets a couple of weeks ago -- in broad daylight! But I would certainly agree shootings are more common than stabbings.

.... I cannot describe the shriek that little guy made. It was one of the oddest, funniest sounds I'd ever heard! (for a split second his eyes weren't even Asian! -- haha I keed, I keed xD). He then started laughing at his own reaction but even then he threw out the 'ol "Why you carry that? You wanna kill someone with that?!" Only then I realized it was the little blade that had so shocked him....

Here is the next thing to try

+1 on that, that's exactly the attitude that the antis love to hear, gives them all the ammo they need and a perfect example to use.

Once again I respectfully disagree. I continually see more people that are rude, self centered and lack basic regard for others more so than polite, respectful people. Knife or no knife.

It appears that quite a few folks here give quite a bit of credence to stereotyping as opposed to individual actions and personal responsibility.

Yes, we have good and bad in the community. I for one will not muzzle everyone for the sake of a few bad examples I feel it's akin to banning an inanimate object because a few misused it.

Feel free to hide in the shadows and feel threatened by ignorance. I won't.

I live in Canada. I guess because we have a lack of guns we use knives. I understand your point with the power tool but I think a lot of people, at least around here don't see it as an essential tool (I didn't until I started carrying it). So when they see one they automatically associate it with a weapon. The first response I got when my friend saw i was carrying a blade was "is that even legal". It was a 3 inch stainless steel folder.

Understood. I live in the deep south or florida. Here shootings are more common, sadly, than knife attacks in public places. Thank you for the follow up. I think most of us are on the same page or at least the same chapter. I will also agree with you in hindsight, my choice of wording was not very hospitable, using the terms weak and illlogical to describe anti knife and easily scared of tools types of folks. I will do better next time.

But who said to hide?
For the most part I've seen suggestions to be civil, not hide.
I don't hide the proper use of my knives, even in a university classroom. I just do so in a normal manner.
I personally think that those who try hiding the use of the knife end up looking MORE suspious.
I know a guy who is so scared about people seeing his knife that he looks around so much and looks so guilty that people do look at him a tad oddly.
I pull my knife out, use it, close it and put it away, and generally everything is cool.:)
And if someone asks about the knife, I explain the tool usage, and/or bore them with the merits of various expensive features.

Other than my workplace stabbings seem to be pretty rare around here..I cant remember the last time I heard of one and I keep up with the local news consistantly. The last stabbing I remember was a woman who ran a hammer drill with a masonary bit thru here husband...Its funny because there has been several "clubbings" lately..At least three that I know of in the last couple of months. A few shootings here and there..

REASONABLY COURTEOUS. Asking people to smoke away from your kids is reasonable. Asking smokers to smoke outside of city limits is not. If I was a smoker and someone told me to take my cigarettes out of the city I would tell them to "F Off." And I think that would be appropriate. Now I think you can draw the same analogy for a knife situation. If someone says, "hey, do you mind, juggling your striders is scaring my daughter" I'd say that was reasonable. If I'm in a public park and cutting a sandwich at a picnic table and someone walks 50 yards over to me and tells me to leave the park with my knife... I might be a little less compliant. Are we really at odds on this point?

No sir, we are not at odds on that point. Courtesy is a two way street. Let’s just make sure that the blade holders are walking on the correct side. If others are not, that is their bad.

Well sure in boston ma. Guns are practically outlawed there, so the next best thing for troublemakers is knives..:) bad jokes aside, as I mentioned in my post.....each state is different.

Prisons, Ive worked in three different systems. retired from a federal usp max..Stabbings are pretty run of the mill stuff..

Ah, yes, that makes sense.
I salute your courage for working in such an environment. I think it's a higher danger level than what police face generally.

well thank you..I got into while I was in school and expected to finish my degree then go on to another form of law enforcement..End up liking my job and stuck with it..

In England the IRA resorted to using cordless drills as weapons, primarily for torture, and you could get in trouble for having one and no good reason to possess it.

ANYTHING can be a weapon and people can be silly about anything ..lol its the way of the world.

If you made a wish and guns and knives disappeared, people would be scared of sticks the same way.
