I guess it often is a waste of my time to claim a knife in a pm and in a followup email to selling parties
Stating I would like a knife thats for sale..lets discuss details.
This has happened 3 times in three weeks already
This is what brought me here.

WHEN they sell it from underneath you anyway?
No communication that states--someone got to it first in a
email or Pm..
Nothing...Not a peep..Just look at the sales post and its SOLD
No names will be added..simply because if thats how it is..
Thats cool I simply will steer clear..
Might be isolated instances
Most are relatively new and that might be it?

Perhaps my bad luck..I very well might be alone?
Sucks to be me..

What is going on lately??????
Ok Im done...
Simply to say the least discouraging..

I wouldn't waste much time getting frustrated. Although I find it to be annoying, mostly the fact that you don't even get a "sorry sold, you where late" ETC....It's just the way some people are.

Doesn't take much to send, or reply to, a PM or an Email with a simple explanation.
Nobody is obligated to do that, but man, it's just feels like a normal human thing to do when you're part of "community"

Yep, there is no real rhyme or reason in these cases. While I do try to address each interested buyer sequentially, not everone cares to participate in that system.

Gizmo,

I eliminated that problem awhile back by only using the {I Will Take It Posted In The Sales Thread As My Time Stamp}

PM's and emails do not count

Please Keep All Communications To {Emails Or PM's}

Email & Pay Pal To This Address mr_rickster@mac.com

Please No Trade Offer's

Will Only Ship To The USA

To Purchase You Must Have A Verified Pay Pal Account Along With A Confirmed Pay Pal Shipping Address

To purchase please post I will take it in my sales thread and email me at the address I have listed above

There sure seems to be some strange things happening lately. I haven't been buying much lately, mostly selling, so I have not noticed this. All you can do is follow the terms and hope I guess.....

I get that man..
I have seen 1 specific BF member do this to me and various people multiple times..
I posted "Ill take this" in advance of someone else and pmd/emailed as well and guess what?
He said that he opened the other guy's email first hahahah
He posted it sold, but never said to who
Not only that
He didnt even bother responding to me until I asked what the heck was happening with the knife and posting in the thread ( like anyone else wondering wth happened to their possible purchase ha)
Worst part was that he had a good amount of feedback and seemed like a good seller..Hell I was wrong haha
I always assumed a good timestamped Ill take it and pm/email follow up was it, but I guess not.
And I hate to say it, but geez it aggravates me when I see him selling/trading..Ill never sell or deal with him ever again ha

I always go off the first "Ill take it"
Its just the right way to go about it
but some ppl just dont seem to care....lol

PS:sorry for the vent:D

There is no single "correct" method of buying or selling.
A lot of people here like to claim items in posts; but that doesn't make PMing or emailing wrong. The fact that people get so upset about not getting something based on saying "I'll take it" is somewhat amusing to me... and the resultant complaints remind me of so many jeers about entitlement.
While I agree that basic responses to inquiries are appropriate, if for no other reason than simple courtesy, I can see why some people might not want to bother.

A person's rep is as good as his words. Saying "the first I'll take it" in the thread is his word.
If not then obviously there can be more that happens between the lines of the thread.
I wouldn't get very upset There will always be knives.

I'd think that if a seller is listing a rare bird, or item deemed in high demand and would like to
Post "rules" he will observe, something like that is him going a second step for the good of the community members.
Otherwise, it's just a knife and there will always be knives.

I agree that posted "rules" should be adhered to...but very few people actually require a post in the thread. If the posted terms do not state that such a post is required, it doesn't matter how the claim is made; and being the first to post doesn't mean one is the first to contact the person.
To take it one step further, making an offer doesn't necessarily count as a claim - some people will reject a lower offer if another person agrees to the asking price, and I think that they are within their rights to do so (as long as they haven't already agreed to the lower offer, obviously); but other people will disregard other offers/claims in the interest of giving preference to the first contact. Those choices are up to the seller, and could depend on any number of variables - does that piece need to be spelled out in each ad? What if a seller doesn't want to sell to a particular buyer, does first "I'll take it" in whatever form trump that option? Personally, I don't think so; but it seems that some do.

I'll take it's in the thread don't work well for me unless you PM me also. I state for people to PM me. PM's go through to my Email which I check regularly. I don't check the threads constantly.
I don't post the buyers name in the thread, It's a private matter and nobody's business. Nobody is being slighted in any way. I am going to take the 1st offer that is a nut job at my price or any price I agree to.
I will however give someone I am in serious negotiations(not just showed some interest) a chance to get the item(but they may not have long to decide-not going to loose other offers), and all people contacting me with buy offers will get a response(but maybe only one-if they pester me)
These days there is a lot of bad behavior on both sides of the sale. I personally am loosing interest in doing sales at all, and my buying is being limited to those I know something about.
I used to enjoy selling almost as much as buying(meant I could buy something else), but these days not so. Too many low ballers and problem people.

How you differentiate between showing serious interest and pestering?

The simple answer to that is - Once a person is told that an item is sold, or SPF, how much more is there for him to say other than "Okay, please let me know if it falls through".

I won't speak for Peter Hartwig on the negotiating issue; but there are a surprising number of people using this site that don't take no for an answer. I've dealt with a few people that choose to argue rather than accept a polite decline of their offer. Seriously - if you can get it for $25 (or whatever) less than my lowest price, just do it.
Part of the reason I refuse to post "I'll take it" in a sales thread is because I don't want to deal with people trying to buy the knife I saw (and purchased) before they did. One person was so persistent that I ended up blocking his email address and putting him on ignore. (Yeah, I probably should have reported him to the moderators; but I didn't). That isn't exclusive to this site; but it sure convinced me not to purchase that way here.

Sorry-2 different subjects -Serious interest, would be something on the line of the buyer saying he was interested in my knife but had a couple ?'s or could I send a photo. This person seems ready to buy, but just needs a little clarification to make sure we are both on the same page as to what he would be getting.
Pestering- is my turning down a low ball offer, just to get another from the buyer, or asking the same thing over and over. This might be something like my refusal to international ship. Neither of these gets the buyer any priority in line and may get them excluded at some point( my decision when that is depending on mood, some days I put up with a lot more than other days)). ?'s about the knife are fine. I am glad to answer them(though I have had a couple take it to extremes).

Bolded 1: I'll never understand people that attempt this, harassing and bullying until they get their way. It seems like a quick way to get put on many users' ignore lists around here.

Bolded 2: I'll never understand this either. Like you said just go get it where you saw the price you liked. I did something like that this morning - company A was selling a knife for $21.99 +5.99 s&h and it would take 3-4 weeks for the knife to arrive, company B (which is the company that makes the knife) is selling the same knife for $29.99 + 2.99 s&h and the knife is being delivered by 8pm tonight. I decided that paying a few dollars more to have it tonight was a better option for me. I privately let a few "friends" know what I had found and a short while later I was chastised publicly on company A's forum and given a warning(for the curious there are no rules regarding private messaging about better deals on company A's site). I didn't, and won't, argue with them about it. If saving $5 and waiting 3-4 weeks sounds like a better deal then good for them, I have no interest in changing the hearts and minds of people that are dedicated to supporting company A. I placed my order and am happily waiting for my new knife.

I totally understand. I think a lot of this harassing/pestering comes down to the keyboard warrior mentality and that most of the pesterers and bullys would have a completely different attitude in a face to face situation. Of course there are those that will still act like this face to face, but I have yet to see one succeed.

When i'm interested in a knife that i'm not familiar with i typically skip the sale and go spend time learning about the knife. Nothing i'm looking at is so exclusive that i won't expect to ever see it again (most of the time). When the knife reappears for sale i'm ready and can get right to the purchase (most of the time). I enjoy that though, it's like hunting for me and when I do get my prize it's pretty satisfying.

The old saying rings true: You catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar.

^ Is everything ok, Keith?

I think that there's a lot more going on here, then you're letting on...

Perhaps this gloom & despair attitude you've been exhibiting lately, has more to do with the Chicago Blackhawks being eliminated in the first round...rather than something related to this forum... :D

Cheer up! There's always next year, bro! :D And just so that you know: I'm commiserating right along with you; the LA Kings lost in the 1st round too.

^ I completely agree with you, Peter. However, you forgot to factor in, the stupid, rude idiots on this forum, whom feel the need to crap in other member's sales thread's.

Just like Brett Favre, I'm seriously considering: retirement. :D

To say nothing if the stupid, rude idiots who feel they have the right to take things out of GBU and crap on members' Visitor Messages.

Between the people incapable of reading the rules, and those who have declared themselves fit to stand in high judgement of the character and morals of all involved in the Exchange, it has become painful to even just watch.

I agree with marcinek post. Things have been getting crazy lately in the GBU.
One of the things I have put in my last few sales thread, that I had never posted before is "I reserve the right to sell to whoever I choose."
I don't know it that sounds rude of puts some people off, but the reason I did it was because of a GBU thread were the Seller refused to sell to buyer #1 and then buyer #1 got his buddy buyer #2 to buy it for him. Spark even weighed in on that thread.

Luckily, knock on wood, I haven't had any problems either buying or selling, but I feel like I have to be on alert, because of all the craziness going on lately in the GBU.
