Have We Gone Mad!

I don't have an explanation. I am dead center politically and I'm afraid the good old days of reason and rational tolerance are over. Taliban on the left, Taliban on the right, both screaming at us. Leave us in peace, we were doing just fine. I don't want what's already happening in many Euro countries. Sheesh.

I was class of 84' in high school, I carried on my belt as did many others, what has become a cultural icon, a Buck folder.
What they are doing to this little kid stinks. Hard to say but recently, for the first time in my life, I'm becoming ashamed of the direction of my country. My local news (A Fox station) even went so far as to point out that it had a large blade in addition to the spoon and fork (of equal size) and that it was clearly a weapon.
IDIOTS!

When principals and administrors had discretion, and could use common sense, they were accused of not applying the rules in an even-handed fashion and/or discriminating. As the number of lawsuits increased, schools went to zero-tolerance policies as a way to protect themselves from such suits.

My what a broad paint brush you have.....

When I was in primary school we had a teacher Mr Cassidy who used to use a simple slip joint pen knife in class to sharpen pencils and deal with wrappings etc...

He was an avid Cetic Fan ( Scottish Soccer Team ) and on his retirement I got him a Celtic emblem slip joint as a present...he was a great down to earth teacher...

Now....that simply would'nt be possible...unless you were very lucky and in a sensible private school with an outdoor emphasis...the UK is bad but I see the USA is not far off either.

From a lot of years in the military I often wonder what is it all for?? I often have more in common with the tribesmen I have met/lived with than the Western Society I am supposed to "protect"...they certainly don't want you back amongst them if you have old style common sense values.

Maybe I could just retire to a Saami or Inuit or Nepal village and let the western world go by....

Old style values have been re-classified as criminal behaviour....or so it seems to me...

When I was a kid--maybe 1971--I once got in trouble for bringing a golf ball to school. I can still remember Mr. Wagoner (the principal) explaining the dangers of bouncing golf balls. But no one thought our cub scout knives were a problem back then.

And contrary to what was said in a previous post, Zero Tolerance policies in schools are not the result of lawsuits, they're an idiotic outgrowth of The War on Drugs.

I know people that are weapons. They are dangerous naked. When are we going to start banning people?

we as a nation are now reaping what we have sown, and it will get worse, a whole lot worse before it gets any better...and it has not been all that long since we started spiraling downward.
when we started letting hollywood raise our children instead of us raising them, look what we have got now, and these are the folks that is leading our country as we speak...

Zero tolerance = zero thought

It's a way for the bureaucrats to turn their minds off and disclaim any responsibility for intelligent handling of a situation.

This kind of nonsense should inspire people to immediately remove their children from the government indoctrination centers known as "public schools". I spent time in public school, private school and home schooled, and from my experience, the public school was the worst by far. Both in terms of the educational quality and prison-like atmosphere. What can you really expect when you mandate that all kinds of kids who would not necessarily want to go to school or be around each other attend a government run one-size-fits-all education environment staffed by unmotivated and unaccountable public service union members?

The part that shocked and bothered me most when I heard the story of the six year old on Free Talk Live today was that his mother was eager and deeply concerned about getting him BACK INTO THE SAME SCHOOL! Why would you want to send your kid back somewhere that they've demonstrated an intent to try and ruin his life over ... really nothing.

I seriously feel like emailing the school. I was in scouts until late high school, and the standard issue pocket knife with the spoon & fork was my first knife! Its a shame to see the little guy get in trouble for something so innocent.

Dr. Marcia Lyles, superintendent of the school district. Be respectful but please share some history and common sense with the superintendent.

It is a sad state. Where I teach there is a zero tolerance policy of weapons, extending to clothing with weapons on them. Should have saw the look of some of the inspecting officers when they saw my computer bag with Glock embroidered on the side, and a few lockers with Ruger locks--yes, I recycle!

I will say this about my kids' school - they did an archery and compressed-air tater-cannon science experiments a few years ago. A previous principal, but I think this one is coming around. :)

Hey, more outdoor scout time for Zachary Christie and Matthew Whalen. :)

Check the teachers' staff room for scissors, letter openers and paper cutters. Check the school kitchens for steak / butter knives. Arrest the criminals hiding these weapons in drawers. :)

When are we going to start banning people?I have said this for a long time!!! Stupid people should not breed...

Say it again brother!

One more time!

Problem is convincing all the stupid people that they are the ones we are talking about, that should not breed. They are too stupid to know they are stupid.

...

I could not agree more! Zero tolerance = no thought, just action.

The only zero tolerance I have liked is the Busse ZT series! :)

When I was in the 3rd Grade, I took a knife collection to school for show and tell, I had fixed blades with 7 inch blades and folders like crazy a shoe box full of knives, yes my teacher kept them at her desk but I still got to show them off. Now this zero tolerance crap is just crazy. This has been around for some time, my nephews had to put up with zero tolerance 10 years ago! I think it should be a case by case basis not across the board crap.
