Yep I saw this and it is a positive note.

Heck, I remember, when I was in High school that during hunting season on Thursday and Fridays that 1/5th of the parking lot would have been full of knives, shotguns, and rifles.

THose that didnt play football usually got to the hunting club before I did, but I always made it in time to hunt:cool::)

Zero tolerance = zero thought

It's a way for the bureaucrats to turn their minds off and disclaim any responsibility for intelligent handling of a situation.

Bingo!

IMO Zero Tolerance laws should not excist in any instance. Esp in situations as this.
Good news is this is the first time I've heard of one being reversed, and it has many people voicing there opionion about Zero Tolerance laws(a thanks to Fox news).

How so?

"Zero Tolerance" policies started in the 80s when, as good soldiers in The War on Drugs, schools decided that they would have "zero tolerance" for students having drugs in schools. It was often idiotic in its implementation from the beginning, and I remember reading news stories about girls getting in trouble for bringing Midol to school and stuff like that. Everyone knew it was stupid, but Rules Are Rules, and all that.

In the 90s, Zero Tolerance was extended to "weapons" with the Drug Free Gun Free School Zones Act of 1994, and then it really took off after Columbine in 1999. In the post-Columbine hysteria, we even had news reports about young children being kicked out of school for drawing a picture of a gun or making a gun hand-gesture. A weapon is a weapon, even if it isn't. Everyone knew it was stupid, but Rules Are Rules, and all that.

As I recall, it was not too long after Columbine that we started hearing about schools being put on "lockdown" whenever the authorities got their panties in a bunch about something. Before that, a "lockdown" was something they did in prisons when the prisoners were getting too rowdy. And its gotten to the point now that when they use prison terminology like "lockdown" in reference to actions taken by school authorities, no one even seems to notice that something has gone very very wrong.

While Columbine itself wasn't a result of The War on Drugs, the authorities' response was taken straight from The War on Drugs playbook. Wars of any sort almost inevitably result in the expansion of government power at the expense of individual liberty, and The War on Drugs is no exception. It's given us the bipartisan creeping fascism of increasingly militarized police, Zero Tolerance policies in schools, and the like. But Rules are Rules, and rules must be obeyed, we're told.

It's not the lawyers who brought us to this point; it's the soccer moms and their ilk. They're the ones you can count on to give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety.

Yep, those were the good ole days:thumbup: I can't think of many in my school(teachers included) that didn't carry a knife. When we got a new knife we would all show it off, and a few teachers would do the same.

I won a regional sales demonstration my Senior year, and then went to Atlanta for the State finals. I used my Browning auto .22, Remington 870, and my winchester model 70 .270 in my sales demonstration.
One reason I didn't win in ATL is because I didn't have any bullets to use for suggested add on sales...major deduction:eek: I winged it when the judge doing mine ask'ed what else she would need to go with the gun...I just held an invisable box of shells and sold them to her, but that was a deduction. Should have carried some.

I walked right through the door with those guns and the only thing that hapened was everyone crowding around wanting to check them out, even some teachers.
That was 1978...my how things have changed.

How things have changed. When I was in HS we used to hunt early in the morning and then go to school, I'd strip off my hunting coveralls in the parking lot and have a 30-30 in the rear window gun rack in my pickup all day, today they'd have a SWAT team fast roping in to arrest me. For my shop project my junior year I made a crossbow, and shot a pencil thru a piece of plywood to show it worked in front of the class, bet that wouldnt go over well these days either.

Simply awesome. We had to build bridges.

Zero tolerance = zero thought

This kind of nonsense should inspire people to immediately remove their children from the government indoctrination centers known as "public schools". I spent time in public school, private school and home schooled, and from my experience, the public school was the worst by far. Both in terms of the educational quality and prison-like atmosphere. What can you really expect when you mandate that all kinds of kids who would not necessarily want to go to school or be around each other attend a government run one-size-fits-all education environment staffed by unmotivated and unaccountable public service union members?

From my experience the opposite was true. The private Christian schools I attended until 5th grade were dirtier with more graffiti of foul language, less qualified and motivated teachers. There are also many states that basically outlaw unions, or at least their effectiveness is zilch, with 'at will' work. That said, once a teacher is on a self-renewing contract it is very hard to fire one and is often just brushed under the carpet, to the detriment of the students, because it is so hard to prove the teacher is junk. They are often moved to elective subjects like Environmental Systems rather than Chemistry or Biology.

It is a sad state. Where I teach there is a zero tolerance policy of weapons, extending to clothing with weapons on them. Should have saw the look of some of the inspecting officers when they saw my computer bag with Glock embroidered on the side, and a few lockers with Ruger locks--yes, I recycle!

Locally a high school drill team chear leader (not sure if this is the correct term) was suspended for having the fake rifles that looks somewhat real used for tournaments in her car during the school day before the meet.

That is good news. When school board elections are held locally, we should all make it a priority to attend and vote.

The part that shocked and bothered me most when I heard the story of the six year old on Free Talk Live today was that his mother was eager and deeply concerned about getting him BACK INTO THE SAME SCHOOL! Why would you want to send your kid back somewhere that they've demonstrated an intent to try and ruin his life over ... really nothing.

+1 This just gives the risk-averse liberal cretins running our educational institutions an excuse to not have to actually think about what they are doing. I graduated way too many years ago from a public high school after years of private school education that gave an excellent education despite having, at that time, the largest non English speaking population of any Los Angeles high school.

Sadly, the days of good teachers seem to be gone. Dogma and rules have replaced thought and initiative.

Yes this story irritated the hell out of me! Are you kidding me!!!!! A six year old with a SPORK! He's facing more time in reform school than most violent adult criminals face in prison time. Hell....he's facing the same amount of days punishment that Roman Polanski faced for raping a 13 year old.

I know, kind of a stretch, whatever.

We live in an upside down world.

Amen. Unfortunately, as Ben Franklin said, whenever you give up a little liberty, to gain a little security, you deserve neither, and you end up losing both.
