Have we ruined our knife appreciation for the simple?

While I do love my mid/high end knives I also never cease to appreciate my 20 dollar swiss army knives. I have carried one for 20 years and used it nearly every single day. Love my tactical folders but the SAK never gets left behind.

I was looking at my knives, selecting a few to thin the herd. I realized as I went through the Cases Bokers, Spydercos, Benchmades, higher priced Kershaws, etc, mid range to some, higher end to my unemployed, disabled, budget limited self. Then I saw them: the CRKTs, the Gerbers, the import Kershaws, and especially an old friend or two: A Gerber LST and Paraframe, and a minimal toy SAK. Just sitting there as m Pocket carries the expensive blades.

And it hit me: my best friends, sharp, useful as ever, and been through a lot together, were going to waste, all because I am supposed to carry Benchmades, right?

Has becoming a knifenut, collector, knife snob, or whatever, made me forget what matters about carrying a blade: Reliable, sharp, and there when I need it?

I removed my Dragonfly from my keys, and replaced it with my LST, and my parafame is in my pocket. No flash, no dazzle, but still working great.

Anyone else notice this?

I love the budget Kershaws(and usually carry one) and the Byrds and cheaper Spydercos are fine with me too. Most CRKT designs just don't interest me(I do have 2 Ripples though) but when they do put out one I like(like the Ripple) O have no problem buying them, either. Won't buy a Gerber though, bad experiences with them in the past and I know I'm not the only one.

My first Gerber was one of the Gators that I picked up at WM. Mostly used it as a hunting knife (field dressing and light cutting chores in the woods). This is back a while when they were still US made and Gerber owned Gerber. I carried a small slim Gerber I picked up in Lowes for a couple years until I lost it and don't recall where it was made, but its replacement was a SOG Twitch II which I still like. But I have been a big Vic SAK fan for many years and I simply do not leave home without one even today when I have so many much higher end knives to choose from.
