Have you ever bought a knife that you liked so much that it cured your addiction?

For the past three years I have been utterly obsessed with buying knives. There would be times where I would be camping on the exchange or vendor sites just to find something to buy because I had the "itch". Almost like a drug addict desperately needing a hit. This year I got into mostly buying customs and I had this list of knives that I was on the hunt for. I ended up acquiring most of them and was kind of on the tail end of "completing" my collection.

But as you fellow knife nuts know, there is no such thing because there will always be the next awesome knife that pops up and it starts all over again. I recently made a purchase that might have just cured my addiction. For the past week now I felt absolutely NO URGE at all to buy anything. I have stayed off the exchange and vendor sites.

I hope it stays this way because there were times when I think about all the other things I could do with my disposable income/fun money. Remodel the garage, buy a motorcycle, buy some cool gadgets, buy that nice watch I've always wanted.

It's this euphoric feel of liberation. Kind of like when you made that last payment to your car or last payment to your credit card.

Any of you found your cure for the addiction?

Yes, once I procured these I lost interest for many others. They all have S30V steel. DM

Mine has certainly calmed down after getting my grail, since it certainly lived up to my expectations, but occasionally I still get that "itch". Just now I don't feel compelled to follow it.

I will agree, it's a nice feeling, though what I tend to want to do with the money I save still isn't productive at all :D

temporary satiation, but not a cure. There is always something different to explore - a grail usually just solves me looking in *that* direction.

I can't say I have yet, but I think if I had the top one in Mr. Martin's pic here, it just might do the trick. And this is just from a photo, let alone handling that beauty.

NO!!!!!! Just when I thought I was done for now, got my grail the NMFBM from busse combat.

Then Ethan Becker comes out and reveals that the Reinhart Kukri is comming back!!!!!?
Not only one,but TWO sizes of them, dang it!
Guess my credit cards are going to suffer for a while more....

Just think of it as "more opportunities to pay amounts in a timely fashion and improve my credit score. It's all about the score. Really." :D

Beautiful knives you got there David.

I think it's similar to relationships where you go through different girls and when you finally find "The one" you just know. I've acquired quite a few grails but none of them have ever stopped me in my tracks like this one did. Btw, the said knife is a..... CQC6!

And here is my entire collection. Downsized to where each one is a grail:

I have seriously considered selling my entire collection and making this my one and only knife. But I have 3 of my collection that are priceless to me and I never want to get rid of them.

I think I could seriously pare my down but, I'd always want a few "back-ups," not of the same knife, but a few knives to fall back on because accidents can happen when we don't expect. (I know, could just go buy another the next day, but I'm crazy that way.)

Yeah, I have. I realized that I had enough knives that I would never carry any of them long enough to even put any good wear on all of them. I am not a collector, but a user, and I was starting to feel like a real glutton.

I buy a pattern I don't have if I can find it inexpensively from time to time, but I am down to a couple of knives a year. Still too many... how many users does a guy need once he finds what he wants? I sometimes use my knives all day every day in my work, so like my other tools I use the ones I like that work the best for me. That means the others just sit. What waste. With the money I spend on one knife I can buy anything from new chisels, a new saw to a drill kit.

I really wouldn't need another knife if I lived three more lifetimes...

What Robert says is absolutely true for me too. I really should sell some of these.... especially the discontinued models I know I'll never want to use.

As far as fixed blades go, the esee 4 cured me, but folders are still a slight "problem" ;)

But on the whole, like midnight flyer said, I think Ive come to the point in my collecting that I have everything I could possibly want or need. My collection already encompasses most of the aspects of the industry that interest me. I have what many would consider to be a small collection, but Ive chosen each knife carefully to be able to say that I have a great variety and have a knife for every mood, occasion, etc. If I feel like elmax or a flipper, Ive got my ZT 0566. Why should I get 3 more similar ZT flippers that would do the same thing, just because they are new and cool? If I want an axis lock and slim profile, then Ill grab my 707. Do I really need six variations of the 940 platform, 3 versions of the 707, and 9 mini grips that all cover the same niche? No.

Therefore the logical side of my brain has actually convinced me not only that I dont NEED anymore, but that I dont WANT anymore, simply because I would hate to see a bunch of good knives never being used. Up until a little while ago, I was on a furious buying streak and wanted to get a crap load of knives just because I could. Anything and everything. I had to consciously force myself to buy only knives that would fill new roles in my collection. Something like 1300 bucks later, Ive kinda settled down and am more than content with the collection I already have. Even now, Im a little pissed I dont use all of my knives enough, but whatever. The point is, my urge has mostly gone away through rationalization.....and will power......lots of will power:D No single knife cured my itch for folders, though.

The fact is, I could easily just keep buying any and all knives I am even remotely interested in, but why should I? All that would result in is a bunch of unused impulsively-bought knives, and a whole lot of wasted money.

The last folders I think I will ever buy will be a dragonfly salt, and a small seb 21. Once those are in my hands, I will be done with collecting forever.......No Im serious! :D

Does anyone have any statistics on the percentage of knife addicts that relapse with in a certain period of time after they stop buying? :D And the most likely causes of relapse? Like maybe ZT putting out a new limited edition, or spyderco... well , just being spyderco?:p

You're a strong man. I am not as strong as you, but I have tried to convince myself since I don't need anything more I should not spend more than $50 on a knife and not buy more than 6 in a year. I did just buy one last week, but that's only been my second since the year started.

OP, we should turn this into the knifeaholics anonymous / knife addiction support group thread :D

I think getting my two grails would cure my addiction. All I need is for Benchmade to make their Rift in M390, and to get a left-handed Rexford Singularity. That would pretty much do it for any addiction.

Unless Todd and Benchmade team up, then I'll be sure to have a relapse.

There is no cure, well at least as long as you're a member here. Were all enablers here not a rehab website. At best you may find something to hold your off for awhile but not forever, the hunger will come back it always does. Enjoy your extra cash while you can. Treat yourself to a nice meal, go out to the movies, just do something. Because one that hunger comes back it's back to top ramen and waiting desperately for the delivery man to show up with your next package.

I hope it'll never come to that with me Krissig. It might... but I like to think I can resist..

Unfortunately, truer words have never been spoken......

The second bolded part I LOL'd at for a good while

My first Busse... I've told myself I'm still addicted since buying it, but I've found that I don't like carrying anything in place of it, so I end up selling/returning whatever I bought after it. My buys are getting few and far between now.

Just sold my 0801, the CRK Large Seb I bought a couple months prior was just so much more classy. I know CRK/ZT are apples/oranges...but the CRK just oozes class, style, and obviously excellent quality. I don't think I'll buy another blade until it is a real Hinderer, or another CRK!
