Have you ever bought a knife that you liked so much that it cured your addiction?

Believe it or not, I actually have zero knives now because nothing screams to me "buy me!" At one point or another, I owned a Swamprat Warden, RAT Izula (before they changed names to ESEE), ZT 0350, Bill Coye Ridgeback, HTM Gunhammer, and a Pohan Leu custom fixed blade tanto that I designed myself.

The only knife that screams to me right now is one that isn't in production yet, and that would be the Spyderco Jani-song. I've followed the Jani-song since it was a Blackhawk Design many years ago, prior to Janich moving to the Spyderco team. I had a custom commissioned at one point in time, but that fell through when the maker gave me empty promises. I do like the Burnley Kwaiken flipper, but Burnley isn't taking orders and is backlogged for 3 years or so.

Me thing is that I like symmetry. So if I want a custom, I want a double headed pivot. I want a liner lock (or a framelock with a scale that covers the framelock...so that might as well be a liner lock). I want the pocket clip mounted on a backspacer. Only two makers come to mind that mount pocket clips on backspacers. Mcusta makes a few knives like this. Caswell makes several customs like this.

And for God's sake, I don't want a stupid cutout on the opposing liner to make lock bar disengagement easier. <-------that annoys me the most.

My itch to acquire has tapered off. Not sure why, I still love looking at different knives, but have less interest in buying more. I use mine, and have no designated safe queens, but dang, you can only use so many, ya know?
Lately, I have been deliberately choosing one knife daily, that has not been out much. They all work.
I did pick up one fixed blade about a year ago. I designed it, and had it made. Steel is S30V, handle is camel bone. I find myself taking it afield more often than anything else I have.

The pm2 didn't cure the addiction, but certainly satisfied the urge to buy more knives. If I could only have one folder, it would do fine, so its hard to top that. However, since the pm2 I have bought a 0550 and an elmax blur so..

On a side note, the sebenza 21 I got as a gift from pops increased the addiction and cost of said addiction3 fold! I used to be satisfied with budget knives, got the sebbie and started looking at those like "what is this crap." All of my knives since then have been $100+ (except the SAK recruit I just picked up for $15)

Things slow down for a while and then the activity will pick up again. It is just the way things are with things you really like. If you can slow it down, I think you're doing well.

I only carry one knife, the CRK Umnumzaan. I love Sebbies, but don't carry them.
I am very fond of Spyderco Sage, Caly and Native lines, and seem drawn toward some discontinued models like the Michael Walker linerlock, EDC forum Moonglow Native and have a custom in the wind. I'm happy but I always check the Exchange. I love nice surprises.

It's not the knife I want, but the feeling, or emotion that comes with the knife, car, house, tv, vacation, alcohol, drug, gambling, money, job, lover, food.

I've slowed down in the last 4-5 months. Sold off a lot, selling 3 currently. Right now I'm needing to save my money for an engagement ring, wedding, etc. Its been a while since anything really piqued my interest. I've purchased some knives just to try out the unique feature(s). Found that I'm not a fan of:

Overbuilt
Assisted Openers
Wave featue
Metal handles (a few exceptions)
S30V.

This has limited my options. I'm happy with what I have, and there are two knives that have stopped my searching--PM2 (only knife in S30V I own, and unlike the other S30V knives I've owned, this one is actually good) and the Manix 2 CTS-XHP. These two knives are perfection IMHO. The Gayle Bradley is a close 3rd.

That's just crazy talk!

Seriously, I have slowed down a lot. I did just miss a Kershaw Trade on the exchange yesterday though...

hopefully the one i got from you will surpress the urge a bit (it should arrive any day)

and i have an additional custom fixed blade incoming

that said i already know of two rare/custom folders i NEED to have :D

Not a chance... :grumpy:
I love knives and there are just far too many interesting blades and makers. :D

Luckily, I've finally made it to the point of being very selective in what knives I buy now.
Most of what I want now involves higher end knives that cost a lot more, and take months of waiting for the knife to be made.

That helps keep the Knife Monster in check. ;)

Any cure would be a death sentence.
Who would want that for a hobby?
Maybe a fixation for a particular maker or blade style would regulate eventually towards a more matured and systematic direction for the collector.
But to buy just one knife and peddle off the rest just won't cut it for me and a load of other folks Here, I reckon.

What caused me to slow down was very similar to what the OP said in his second post. I've sold off many of the knives that I don't use / collect dust, and started after "grails" (or something similar because I can't afford the real thing ;))

I don't think there is a cure because every year they keep coming out with sexy new designs and evolutions of steel, but being able to slow down is a step in the right direction.

My addiction is just spinning up unfortunately. I have to put the brakes on for a few months after I got a nice custom and a limited edition ZT in the same month.

Hinderer xm18 definitely changed my perspective and got me to sell off quite a few high end productions and customs.

How do you cut things?
