Have you ever bought two of the exact same Traditional knives? Why?

I just bought a knife that I love so much that I am contemplating picking up a second. Part of me is thinking I already have one, either spend it elsewhere or just have some extra money in my pocket. The other part of me is thinking that having a back up will make me more comfortable using the first one and I'll always have a pristine example regardless what happens.

Have you ever bought two of the exact same knives? What prompted you to do so?

Yes. I have two Case Small Texas Jacks in Amber Bone CV, two Case Medium Jacks in Sunset Winterbottom Bone SS, and at one point I owned two Case Peanuts in Chestnut Bone CV.

Here are the reasons:
Medium Jack in Sunset Winterbottom: I had ordered one from a dealer and it still hadn't shipped in over a week, and they were showing out of stock on their web page (though was in stock when I ordered). I had experienced a couple of times where dealer web sites didn't match inventory, so I ordered from a second dealer. When I contacted the first dealer, they actually shipped it so I ended up with two. Rather than returning one, I used one for a dye-job experiment so I could keep the other like new. [Incidentally the dyed knife looks MUCH better than the factory coloration on that knife.]

Amber Bone Medium Jack CV: I wanted to experiment with allowing / coaxing a patina on the CV steel, so I bought one for patina formation and one to keep shiny.

Peanut CV - Same deal, wanted one to experiment with and the other to keep original. I ended up gifting one of them to a forum member on another site, new and unused in the box, and never did the patina experimentation, having satisfied my patina curiosity with other CV knives.

Now I do have multiples of some patterns but in different steels and/or handle materials, so not identical. I'm guessing for the purposes of your question that doesn't count. (like having 3 Case '18 pattern Medium Stockman knives - one in Amber Bone CV, one in Pocket Worn Orange SS, and one in Stag SS).

In a perfect world I would buy two or even three of every knife I buy. This gets quite pricey though... :/

I've done this too many times to count. I'm an unorganized accumulator....I can't help it. :)

Just purchased 3 Victorinox Spartan knives this past weekend. One for my collection, and the other two to give to my daughter & her boyfriend as gifts. They both enjoy wine, and the spartan model has a cork screw (never fun to find oneself with a bottle of corked wine, and no means to decork it)... lol! ;-)

No I haven't ever bought two of the same (not saying it's completely beyond me! but it's not likely). I know it's pretty common with members here to buy two of something, but I've never quite had a budget to support that lol. I have seven GEC traditional folders and love them all in their own right. Of those seven folders 3 or 4 of them are very frequently carried and the others not as much but occasionally.

If you are able to buy a spare of a favorite model why not? :)

All the time. Want some to use and some to keep nice....On the ALOX (Soldiers, Pioneers and Farmers) they are different models/date stamps/options/conditions/colors and sometimes just because I could get a nice one for less than 25 bucks shipped. Bought lots of Soldiers when they were being discontinued because and I knew the price would double. Try to buy Moras and reg SAKs this way too when I can. In the "SAK Box"there are multiples of gray magnifier Champions, Explorers and Swiss Champs which are some of my favs.

After the fire...there are just some knives I never want to be without ever again....it's an illness. :D

Yes, but only in the sense were someone asks "Why do you have 10 of the exact same knife?" and then I sound like a dork explaining that they aren't at all the same, they have different tang stamps, blade profiles, pulls, rivets, blade materials, etc.

So, no, never had two of the "same" knives, but several that could be considered really really close....

If you don't mind my asking, what knife has you so enthralled?

Yes I have multiple GEC 15's/Charlows. Not all in the same cover material. Many are duplicate are blade patterns.

This. When I find a pattern/design that really strikes a chord, I end up eventually wanting more than one rendition of it more often than not.

The first one made us feel good, so we buy the second one and it makes it feel good too. [Edited by Powernoodle].

Traditional forum, traditional knives please.

I bought three of these Buck 703's for two reasons.

It was my favorite companion knife back in the 80's and when I discovered a few years ago that they were discontinued yet still available I just had to get one for old time's sake.

Then I decided that I wanted to collect one from every year of production. 1979-2001 if I'm not mistaken. These three are as far I've gotten.

Gotta admit, there are a couple favorites that I gather multiples of: Buck 307, Old Timer 8OT, Case Peanut...etc.

I like having an extra (or two) in case my primary gets lost. Plus, if I see a bargain, it's hard not to scoop it up.

GEC 15 eo lambsfoot

I guess Opinels count. I have two 06s, and feel they are cheap enough to have duplicates of. I like to carry an 06 in my left pocket, as a backup so it doesn't hurt to have an extra in case I break or loose one.

Glad to see I'm not alone. I bought 2 of the 2012 BladeForums Traditional Forum Knife last year (only 1 for the 2013 edition)......One for carry and one to put up because I liked the pattern and blades. I have also done the same with several different Victorinox models. I have several of the "old style magnifying glass" Explorer models as well as several Yeoman's. I bought those because I don't like the newer style magnifier and Yeoman's are not made any more.

After reading thru this thread, I am thinking instead of same exact knife, I may end up getting same pattern but different handle material. Try something new out while still having the same knife itself.
