Have you ever bought two of the exact same Traditional knives? Why?

I have four grandchildren, 2 in Arizona, 2 in Georgia. So I buy at least 5, 2 stainless for GA, 2 carbon for AZ, and at least one for myself. I have several Opies that are dupes, different handle wood and carbon or stainless. Sometimes I buy 2, 1 to use and 1 for a spare.

OT

After reading thru this thread, I am thinking instead of same exact knife, I may end up getting same pattern but different handle material. Try something new out while still having the same knife itself.

This is what I have done numerous times. Same frame and blade arrangement, but many different handles.

I have two of the same pattern, but only have exact duplicates of my favorite SAK in case I loose it. I did just that a couple months ago (left it lay on a window sill on a job) and had an immediate replacement when I got home. Still have one more in the box of this particular SAK, but I will buy another to keep until its needed.

Nothing expensive, but I have a few Case sodbuster jrs. I have at least one in every bag, one in the kitchen, one in the tool belt, i have them because they are so cheap and take everything i throw at 'em. I always have a sodbuster with me, i hunt when them, i eat with them, i work with them. A sodbuster and some other type of traditional knife handles everything i need to do. Nothing wrong with doubles :)

I only have a couple of the patterns where I have the exact same knife but I do tend to get 2 or 3 of the same pattern just different colored bone or wood scales if it's a pattern I really like.

I only have one knife where I bought another exactly alike. The Case slimline trapper given to me by my father-in-law had gotten to the point where I needed to buy another to replace it due to wear and tear in 39 years of use. It's one of my favorite all around working blades.

Yes, gifts. I have three Vic Waiters, two Vic Bantams, and two Vic Classics I'll give as Christmas gifts this year.

I do this with Buck pocketknives - different tang stamps, shields, or manufacturers (i.e., Schrade/Camillus/Buck-CA/Buck-ID), but exact same model knife (301, 303, etc.). OH

Having a "backup" makes me feel less guilty about using one. Keep one pristine, let the other one get sharpened, scratched, patina'd, etc.

The knife I want most right now is an ivory bone handled #92 eureka jack. I want 2, not just so I can keep a pristine "backup", but so I can watch the ivory bone "age" over time and use.

Discontinued patterns or oldies that I'm really sold on deserve a double or even triple buy. Don't feel 100 % non-guilty about it but I can't resist. It's a shame that some knives/type of knives/quality of workmanship, materials (insert your kick...) just disappear because of the market. I do my best to allow time for real world use just to test, confirm or invalidate love at first sight. But when the auction is expiring...

Well, once. By chance I had a gift card to spend at a place which had some Case knives and got two Sodbusters in CV. Turned out to be a good thing. I sharpened and oiled them both up, squirreled one away and used the heck out of the other one.

Found out those things are tougher than you think. I over tightened the pivot and was trying to loosen it up by clamping the blade in a vise near the pivot and twisting the knife back and forth folded at 90 degrees. That cheap looking plastic handle twisted and distorted and bounced right back.

Kept me from buying more knives for some reason. I had a great one to back up and one to use. 'Course this only lasted for a while.

Now, I just had to get two Schrade 8OT's and 34OT's (USA made). They don't make them any more.

Wait... Opies count?

I have a triplicate of the limited edition folding Buck Kalinga with rosewood scales I EDC, and frequently travel by air to visit relatives. I have one with them and that way I do not have to risk losing it while on the plane. The third is in safe keeping as a backup incase of loss.

I should probably clarify after taking another look at the title of this thread - I've never bought two of the exact same knife, but multiple variations of the same pattern.

I buy multiple of same knife when I like the knife a lot & it's discontinued model. reason 1) in case it gets lost 2) to keep one or two in collection.

OoOo good taste my dude! How is the rust red in person? I like it but just worry it would be too bright for an office setting as Id never want to bring attention to it. The rust red and antique yellow are fine looking examples though! And yes, I know I worry about silly things when it comes to knives

Damn, You guys buy a lot of knives! :p

The knife that started this in my head was the GEC EO 15 in ebony. I kind of want another of the exact same bc I am kind of worried about the ebony getting scratched or dinged in my pocket. But other part of me says, dont be silly, ebony is strong. So its either another ebony as a back up, or one in antique yellow bone to try out different handles while trying to keep the ebony as clean as possible. First world problems at its finest! The idea of getting the same knife in different covers is intriguing, but then I think I wouldnt use the ebony at all to keep pristine. But the whole purpose of this is bc I love the knife (in ebony) so darn much! lol oy

On two separate occasions, I accidentally ordered two Buck 102's and two Vic Huntsmen due to Amazon being glitchy. I put the extra Huntsman in my car, and gifted the extra 102 to a dude I owed a tank of gas (I think I came out ahead I that one, actually).

I did intentionally by an extra Buck 303 because I liked my first one so much.
