Have You Ever Converted a Knifeless Friend Into a Every Day Carrier?

I pulled out my ZT0350 in front of a buddy of mine, who has never owned a folding knife, and he loved it and immediately wanted one. But once I told him that they run around $100 bucks he was turned off and that was the end of it. Nothing more affordable has since spiked his attention as much as the 350. Other friends and co-workers, just say "why do you even need a knife like that everyday?". To a marginal degree they're right, my slick little Kershaw leek can handle 95% of daily tasks. I really don't need anything super beefy most of the time. My cousin took to a Leek that I gave him really well, and he carries it everyday now. He's since bought a couple more Kershaws.

I guess people either get it or they don't. It's kinda hard justifying why I like to carry big ZTs and Spydercos. But thats not to say I don't carry the little guys too. I like em all.

Yes - someone I work with - and I'm proud to say he went from carrying nothing to buying and carrying a micarta sebenza 21 in a slip sheath in his pocket.

It took me bringing in several of my knives for him to look at, and I lent a copy of my "Exquisite Blade" DVD to him. He went right for the good stuff out of the gate.

I cant even get my buddies at work to buy knives over $40. In there mind thats way to much. Funny thing is 3 years ago i thought same way. Now im over the $200 mark.

Yep,Its kind of like being an evangelist of sharp things,:p
The knives they now carry daily, aren't top end, but at least there carrying.
The owner of our company loves his Boker Trance.
The Manager, carry's a Tenacious.
A fellow worker also carry's a Tenacious.

I don't try to convert anymore, either they get it out they don't, it's like trying to convince an anti gun advocate that carrying gun everyday is normal or like trying to convince an animal rights activist that hunting is a good thing.

Like I said I gave up, now if they ask, I inform and educate with a smile.

I share T. Erdelyi opinon on the subject...I almost feel sorry for the people that actually ask, I can go on for quite some time haha.

Earlier this month I sent one of my best friends a birthday present. It included a cheap custom fixed blade to beat on and learn to sharpen with. Also a custom camp knife by one of the great makers from BF. And finally a case trapper in bone. I don't know if conversion worked as we live in different states. I think it will take because he is in the trades like me and knives come in pretty handy on a construction site.

I finally got my cousin carrying. He's given me sh!t for years, so I finally challenged him to carry for a week. I gave him a black Kershaw Leek.....he's had it for almost 6 months now. He started asking me about bigger knives, bearings, and differences in locks......GOTCHA!!!!

my old roommate and one of my best friends. he had seen me carry mid to high end spydercos for years. he liked them and respected it, but never had the urge to get one himself. Then I got a tenacious. After he saw it's price and just how well that thing cut he got a persistence and probably carries it 75% of the time. he's still not at the level where he can't leave home without it, but he'll get there.

Kind of my dad, too. he's been in the landscape construction business for years. but besides having a box cutter type razor, and a couple old crappy steak knives in his truck, he never had a good knife. got him an opinel and blew him away. Granted the first one he got he snapped an inch off the tip in the first week, but the second one has lasted him years, and he even manages to sharpen it. It's not normally in his pocket, but it's right there at hand in his truck and when I visit him at work it's normally somewhere nearby.

Yeah. At first he asked me what I needed so many knives for. Then he fondled some of my knives, and the next thing I knew, he had several orders placed at KnifeCenter.

Most notably, The Girlfriend, least notably the ex-girfriend. Also a coworker and one of my friends has turned into a full fledged knife nut.

Same thing here, except for the tip snapping part. His most expensive knife is $40
I'm slowly working him up. Me on the other hand has no problem blowing $300-400 on a knife.

I've gotten three of my coworkers to start carrying blades.

One has a delica.
One has a mini grip.
The last only got a cheap little true utility key chain knife.

yes, I had a friend who always thought it was stupid that i carried a "weapon". I always said that i dont believe in violence and thats not why I carry one. I just had and interest in them and I liked knives with neat opening mechanisms. So they were always more flashy than he would like. One day when he was making a comment about how I always have a knife I asked him how many times in the past he has asked me to cut something for him. Which was damn near every time we went and did something. He then realized how simple of a concept it was and how useful it could be to have one. He went out an got a USA Gerber EZ out that day (just like my edc at the time) and he carried them until they went to china. Then he carried a kershaw storm II. Funny thing is he always gravitates to knives that quickly get discontinued. The last knife I remember him wanting was a Lone wolf Harsey D/A. Then they discontinued it, lol.

All 3 guys that i work beside everyday have been converted. I actually sold them each the knife that they are carrying.

guy1: Kershaw Ripcord
guy2: ZT 0561
guy3: Becker bk-9 with a kydex sheath i made (he just doesnt like folding knives, but he has been carrying this big honkin' bk-9 everyday for almost a year. To each his own i suppose)

Yup, one of my best buddies from school always used to give me crap for carrying such expensive knives. I convinced his lady friend to buy him a Manix 2, and now he understands, uses the hell out of it too.

Knives are tools, just takes some people longer to realize that then others.

Both of my brothers got converted, thanks to me. My one brother I gave a JYD to. He wasn't satisfied and started looking to replace it. He has since gotten: 2 Protech Dorus (a production and one of the 2-tone skull limited editions), a damascus Skyline, an Essee 4 and 5. My other brother I gave a CRKT Hissatsu 2 because he liked it and he just bought a damascus Scallion. They're both hooked.
