Have you EVER felt the need to use your knife for self defence?

I've always heard of people carrying steel for protection. Have any of you felt threatened and had to pull one out on a dude? I hope this never happens to any of you.....but have you?

No, and many around here will tell you that knives for defense is bad. I agree, but when it comes down to it, if I don't have my HK on me, I'll take a knife against nothing.

My friend I used to work with used a knife in defense once. He was held up, dude wanted his wallet, my friend pulled out his Kershaw Blackout, put it to the guys neck, and the perp took off.

I deanimated a rogue packet of kitty litter the other day...I did it ontop of my washing machine, and spilled its insides into the machine...damn the wife was pissed.

Knives should always used as an extreme last resort, as they are a lethal weapon and cause severe damage. They can also be used against you fairly easily especially if you don't have training and a damn good grip on it. I've heard that knife fighting takes a good deal of training and without it, things are just plain messy.

Fortunately I've never had to use it as a weapon, though it does provide comfort while walking at night. Just last week I was walking out at 4am with my knife in 1 hand, flashlight in the other just in case.

i always carry a knife for self defense, and have been doing so since i was very young, but i have never felt threatened enough by someone to need to take it out.

some people though, cannot carry knives responsibly. i had a friend ask me why i always carry a knife, i told him for self defense. when i asked him why he didnt carry one, he said that he gets emotional and irrational during confrontations and things like that and that he feared that he would end up stabbing someone over something stupid, so he felt that not having any kind of weapon was a better choice for him. unfortunately most people who arent responsible enough to carry a knife for self defense do not realize it like my friend was able to.

A flashlight or pepper spray would be more effective than a knife for self-defense. Anything that forces you into arms length to be effective is a BAD idea.

When I was about 16, I was out on a road bike (the pedal kind) far away from any houses back in the back country. A car with 4 older teen boys that were drunk came up and one got to running his mouth, while his friends whooped and egged him on, at me.
I was very scared and when I'd try to ride off they would pull up and block me. The one doing all the mouthing got out and I stopped and pulled out a Spyderco Endura opened it and held it in front of me. He just said go on pull your knife and mouthed some more before getting back in the car and they drove away.
I was very, very glad they left and felt like I couldn't have stopped them with the knife if they had chose to press the matter. Did it deter them? Maybe, but I sure didn't feel very confident while facing them.

This may sound funny, but according to the Canadian Criminal Code....Canadian Citizens are not allowed to defend themselves with anything that could be considered a weapon. Our Canadian justice system likes to keep us vulnerable at all times.

i have pulled and used my knife in self defense but i to this day wish never to again,

it was a few years ago and i was heading home on the bus, i was a freshman in college at the time but dressed very well, i worked as a performer at a magicians only club here in los angeles called the magic castle where just to walk in the front door you had to wear a suit. so i was sitting on the bus staring out the window when i noticed an middle aged homeless man harassing some young kids, at the next stop i told him to leave them alone and wait for the next bus, when he wouldnt i grabbed his arm and walked him off the bus as i wes getting back on the bus he tried to slash me with something, it caught my bag and sliced clean through the heavy cavas. i tumbled off the bus and he continued to shlash at me with whatever he had and in my desperation i pulled my old knockoff delica out of my pocket and slashed back. definately hit something and the second he stopped i ran like all hell.

to this day i carry a knife, but not in self defence. if the situation is called for i will be ready, ive taken both armed and unarmed fighting classes but i do not hope to ever pull a knife to use it for anything but a tool ever again. when people ask me why i carry a knife i tell them simply as a tool to me a knife is not a weapon, it is not a toy, it is a tool.

No, that's what the gun's for, how many times is this question to be asked and answered?

Its in the same category as the other one in General at the moment

"If you could only have 2 knives to last you the rest of your life"

Screw this, back to W&C I go.

i carry a SUREFIRE 5 W LED, small, bright and a HARDCORE STRIKE BEZEL on it.

dont get hit with it.

no problems with cops.

Yes I have, it was swiss army knife, someone in a mall decided that they wanted my bag, so as i was getting it off my back I pulled my knife and slashed his hand, he stood staring at the blood falling on the ground and i ran like hell.
now I am older, have a black belt in martial arts, and if the situation occurred again I would do the same except i would not be running, and nor would he.

no, i haven't...2 things though, if someone comes at me with a knife, and i feel they have a pretty big advantage over me somehow- well, don't say you weren't asking for it...a knife for self defense is a very serious thing..you have to be in a life or death situation...2nd thing though is that if it has a good solid, pointed handle, maybe you can use it as a kubaton...my microtech has a glass breaker, and my new random leek if held right and used right could do plenty..just my 2 cents

I was once with some friends who were all mugged... everyone except me. The guys had knives, and my buddies just handed over their cash. I said i had no money. I actually had only $18 in cash on me. They said "We're just gonna F you up and TAKE your money." I shrugged, and said, "have it your way." We walked away, and I THOUGHT that was the end of it... we went home, which was two blocks away... when my friend grabbed TWO BIG kitchen knives, and said "I'm gonna go get our money back." We urged him not to. He insisted. We had to wrestled him to the ground, WITH the two big knives, and took them away. He had already made it outside door. The thugs were RIGHT outside. They did not see the knives, but they now wanted MORE. We went inside, and just sat there while they threw rocks at the house. We wanted to call the cops but we had been drinking, and honestly did not want to be taken advantage of.. PIs and whatnot. That day SUCKED. This does not really fit here... just my only real knife-related experience with violence. The only other time was at at party, and a dude got pissed that a girl pretended she was with me because she didn't want to have anything to do with him, and he pulled a freakin' knife!!! I vividly remember it was a Spyderco. One of his own friends sucker punched him, took him outside and beat the snot out of him. That may be it... it sucked, but I walked away with knowledge... or at least knowing that there was an empty place in my brain waiting for knowledge... I walked away knowing that I had to learn to defend myself with improvisation. maybe RUN... but whatever the matter... I learned to PAY ATTENTION!

+1 to what Nate said... a knife is a great kubaton. Just make sure it is never "brandished" or you better believe that it's a fight until someone's asleep. If nobody else was around to help, you better believe that if someone pulled a knife on me and I could not run... my goal would be to make that sucker go nite nite... That is, if I thought I could not break a few bones first. I HATE violence.... but I HATE being hurt more.
