Have you EVER felt the need to use your knife for self defence?

I EDC a knife everyday, my life would have to be in danger for me to pull it out as a weapon, and if I couldn't run.
I would also like to bring up that people are not the only dangers out there even in sprawling urban areas. There are a lot of stupid dog owners and if a dog tackles me to the ground it's going to meet my blade.

i got in a fist fight with this piece of crap! complete disrespect for me and the veterans who fought for our country! i really wanted to pull it out but i made the smart choice and beat him up old school!

Nope. As everyone else has said, it's a tool blah blah, blah blah. To be honest, I would pull it out as an intimidation factor. If they arent running, then I am.

I believe you should NEVER pull a weapon you are not willing to use (eg. to intimidate them). You will likely hesitate, giving your attacker an opportunity to take it from you. On to the question though. I have never had to use it, but it has been a comforting thing to have at times.

I trained in martial arts in Japan and trained in defending against attackers with knives for about 2 years. I also trained with one. But my teacher always said that in any situation, it's better to run, if possible. No matter how good you might think you are, there is no guarantee you won't read somehing wrong and make a bad move. And if you can't run, pull the knife for intimidation. And with no other choice, I feel comfortable enough against someone who has no apparent training.

It's different for everyone, but I never leave without some kind of knife. The initimidation factor can save your life. Once walking through the woods when I was younger, a group of five kids came charging at me and then pulled up short when they saw my hunting knife in my waist. I know bone deep that they would have had some fun with me otherwise. They just kept asking about the knife as I walked myself out of there. And I have never forgotten that experience. From that point came my fascination with knives:D

I have not. That's what I carry my Glock 30 for.

BUT, I will say that I do carry a knife on my "off hand" side to use (to "slash" with) in case I have to use my primary hand to "guard" my gun and cannot "pull it". Sure hope I never need to use either, but.............

My .02 FWIW YMMV

If a a perp came at me with a weapon or a large group of dudes attacked me I might see my Spyderco Military as an effective weapon...thats if I dont have my 26inch ASP nearby. But how often does that happen? Other then that for a single unarmed attacker (or even a couple) I got my hands elbows, knees and shins. I've EDC'd knives for a few years and never had to pull it as a weapon but then again noone really bothers me since I am a larger muscular dude. But with some training knives can be a great weapon of opportunity in a life and death scenario.

I carry a large leatherman multi tool since I read in Tactical Knife that most people don't think of it as a weapon.I wonder if that would work in Canada? A drunk guy had his hand in his coat pocket and demanded money.I took the money out of my billfold and gave it to him-about $30 and steped back saying "no problem" Walked away glad to keep the billfold.LATER,I thought it would have felt good to have droped the mony and then stab neck at C4 with my miltary spyderco.I did the right thing by just giving him the $30.But if I ever did stab some one they would not see the knife.

Yes it would, but don't give credence to all the people who think you cannot carry a tactical knife in Canada, BECAUSE YOU CAN!!!
You just can't SAY it's being carried as a weapon, and let's face it, most of us will use our "tactical" knives to deanimate oranges, cut open a box, or cut a steak when the restraunt gives yo a really crappy steak knife.
I'll never get why so many people, even IN Canada, think you can't carry a knife in Canada. Makes no damn sense.

No, that's what the gun's for, how many times is this question to be asked and answered?

Few people have a gun with them at all times.I carry at least one knife at all times.I have a shot gun next to my bed.I'll reach for the gun first. You bet. .One more time...guns are great IF you have a safty off, cocked and loaded and in your hand...IF not... a push knife could hurt you if the bad guy wants your big gun.

"Have you ever felt the need to use your knife for self defence?"
Yes, several times.

Re: using the knife as intimidation. Just my opinion, but I disagree with this. It gives the bad guy a chance to see what you've got, then formulate a plan of his own and maybe even pull out his own weapon. The other person shouldn't know you have a blade until it's stuck in him.

I agree and I've carried for years up here.

Haven't had to, thank God. I had a dream a couple nights ago that I was in the Mumbai attack. I was in a hotel room with a girl, and the bastards knocked on my door. I told her to poke her head out when he came in, then duck back down. When he came through and saw her, he ran toward her, and I was at the side and tackled him from behind, stabbed him in the arm, the back, the chest, then cut his throat.

I have no idea if I'd do that in real life... I think I would if my life was in danger. Hopefully that never happens.

yes , on two occasions... each time a small blade on a pocket knife..
both times gave warning to the xxxx that i might get hurt but that i was not going to hesitate hurting them.. each time i use it every thing was quickly over...
bullys dont like getting hurt it seems ... jest hurting others ..
would i again.. in an heart beat..

Had a dog attack my girlfriend at the time and myself. We were able to put a hedge between it and us, but I was getting ready to stab it.

I think I said this in another thread but... I also carry a concealed gun (g23, legally) but since we have moved out in the country I find myself doing it less and less. I know, I know, I'll need it when I don't have it...bad habit. However, I ALWAYS have a knife on me (lately Spydy Para). I would probably not be able to effectively draw it and get it into action if I was suddenly attacked...but, if I had a little warning and felt like it was a deadly situation and I could not flee...Hell yeah (for me anyway) a blade is better than nothing. Not to mention the million of other useful applications every day that I use it for.

Wasn't self-defense but I've seen one knife fight in my life, between a friend and another idiot back in high school days. Both were posers and got into the fight because neither had the brains to de-escalate or back-down. Neither knew what they were doing which probably kept them both from getting killed. They hopped around waving and slashing like they were extras in "West Side Story"

My idiot friend managed to slash the other dumbass across his forearm -which ended the fight. At that time, I couldn't believe how much blood could come from a knife cut. Since then, I've seen worse, but I will always remember this "knife fight".

My idiot friend is now a corporate attorney. He is a good attorney, but still an idiot.
