Have you ever had a "cheap" knife kick nicer knives out of your pocket?

Whenever I buy a new knife, I EDC it for a while (especially if the blade is carbon, I like to build up a patina) and it replaces whatever I'd been using. Sometimes that means that a cheap knife will replace a more expensive knife.

I've been using a Douk Douk during the weekend, before that I had my Sebenza in my pocket.

My most carried knife is one of my SAK tool knives. The one implement I probably use the most is the toothpick, followed by the scissors and the pliers. In fact, I think I use most of the tools more than the knife blades.

My most-used knife is probably my Opinel 8, since I ship lots of stuff I sell, and I use it at my desk to cut tape when I package things. When it gets all gunked up I clean it, and strop it razor sharp in minutes. I have lots of other very expensive knives that never see the light of day, unfortunately.

The one exception is a stag handled GEC Executive Whittler with a Wharncliffe blade. That razor sharp Wharncliffe blade makes a perfect letter opener, and it sits on my desk for that purpose alone.

Graham stubby folding razel by CRKT constantly gets time in the rotation with knives 10X the price. Great little utility knife.

For an office EDC yes. CRKT Razel is perfect for office/light work. The blade shape works great for letters, boxes and the flat tip will remove any sticker or glue off your desk.
I have also found that a Microtech Ultratech is the ultimate office knife. Also the m16kz works well

BUt for manual labor or outdoors no. You get what you pay for. I work on the docks of a water sports facility and also do odd jobs. My carry rotation for work looks like this.View attachment 406511

The scale on that 0550 is damn nice!

Also, while I don't have very expensive knives in my collection, I find that my new Ontario Utilitac 2 has kicked everything else back to my Pelican case. Even my Emerson.

I often carry my Spyderco Tenacious in preference to my Endura, because the G10 handle feels better than the FRN. Also I just got a PM2, and won't carry that very often, I'm too afraid of losing it. Not to mention that laws in Australia are pretty restrictive, and if anything happened I'm not sure I could having my PM2 confiscated by some over-zealous copper.

As with an above poster, my CS American Lawman has taken over for just about everything including my Benchmades, Spydercos, and Piranha auto.

For me it was a gerber paraframe i picked up at walmart, until i stuck my fingers in the oversize skeletonizations and cut up 3 finger tips, went back to more idiot proof kershaws after that.

I used to carry a Benchmade 530 and a Case Swayback Jack. I still carry them once in a while, but my typical duo these days is a Cold Steel Pocket Bushman and a Rough Rider peanut in tortoiseshell acrylic.

Because they work great, can be used with impunity and honestly, I'm not into self definition through jewely.

Well, I guess I'm into self definition through jewelry then. I wear beautiful clothes, drive a couple of nice cars, hell my e-cig cost as much as a sebenza. I am a knife nut after all, why carry something cheap? I've got a custom in my pocket today. I'm hanging a few large flatscreens today and I'm gonna use it to cut cable straps, break down boxes, strip/cut some wire, and maybe cut up some fruit.

I realize I can use a utility knife to do those things above, but where's the fun in that?

Its hard for me to buy inexpensive knives because I LOATHE 8Cr13MOV, which is usually used.
I cant really buy any cheap Kershaws because of how much they love that steel.
I dont really mind AUS-8, but I find that it chips and rolls easily. And doesnt stay sharp very long.

So, short answer, no.
I dont like Opinels, either. (Please dont burn me at the stake for saying that. :o)
The thought of the handle swelling up so much that it doesnt work anymore ruins it for me.
The cheapest knives I'll buy are Case knives, and theyre still $50 ish.

I guess all my knives are cheap ones — most I've ever paid was under $50 — so for me it would come down to "cheaper" kicking out "cheap." Hmm.

My tastes and preferences in EDC have changed over the years, but they all run solidly down-market. And I've never put away (thrown away, given away, sold) any knife because it failed some comparison. What drives the EDC choice is what tasks I think I'll need a knife for — and, frankly, whim-of-the-day.

I guess a dragonfly2 counts as kicking a more expensive knife out of my pocket. I have 3 of them and they get carried as much if not more than other more expensive knives in my 50+ rotation.

I don't carry many expensive knives to work. A SAK, a Navy 530, or random Boker may accompany the $100+ blade. So there is no one left out, just one more at the party!

I carry a pm2 much more often than my sng or my sebenza 25. And I really like the sng and sebenza.

I don't enjoy beating on any knife actually. I take care of a 20 dollar knife like I would an expensive one. I've found that I'm preferring to carry my inexpensive knives more and more because they're cool and I love 'em. I've mostly been carrying a Douk-Douk, I'll also carry Mercator and Okapi, all 20 something dollar knives. I can relax when I use these, they're durable and strong. I don't worry about them breaking (not because they're inexpensive) but because they're sturdy workman knives.

I recently got a RAT 1 which is very impressive. I would be shocked if this knife replaced my large Sebbie or Zaan.
