You have heard the story of the guy that went to a yard sale and bought a painting for 5 dollars only to later find out it is worth 500 dollars. Well, I would like this thread to be a collection of how you maybe got a great deal on a custom knife.

I imagine going to a rural flea market and looking through a case full of miscellaneous pocket knives. While glancing through them I see a unique one with LAKE stamped on the blade. I ask the guy running the booth how much. He says 40 dollars. I try to casually say OK and shakily hand him two twenties. I then get out of his sight and run while jumping up and down and celebrate my new score.

Has something similar happened to you?

Jon

I've heard of someone buying a or a set of Scagels that way.

As for me, I picked up a Fogg for a very good price at the OKCA 3 years ago, but that's it.

I have the same fantasies, but mines resolve of a yard sale in rural America, where I would maybe pick up some Vietnam-era ST-23 or ST-24....

There are many a fine, fine Japanese sword, "rescued" by a US sailor in Japan after the war, and later picked up for a song by a sharp collector. But I think they're very rare now.

a woman had a pouch full of scagels, the case made by scagel also, it wa in my blade mag,.

A buddy of mine saw a Moran ST 23 or 24 at a somewhat local flea market a few years back priced at $500.

He was negotiating a very rare VN era knife at the time and simply did not have the $$.....he about passed out when I told it what it was worth.

Of course, I did not hear about it till the market was over....and of course, he did not have the dealer name.

One of the local Knife nuts picked up a early Mel pardue folder at the local show for like $20 .

I found a Rudy Ruana hunter at a yard sale for $5. Later sold it for $100 I was sooo happy.

A pair of Harvey Deans at Oregon this year.Camp Knives. One Damascus and the other forged.$1800.00 for the pair
Still cannot believe they sat on the guys table for two days.

I found a guy that had over 20 NIB Pacific Cutlery and Bali-Song USA custom butterfly knives that were almost 20 years old and long discontinued........bought them ALL! He still calls me once in a while with others, not often enough though!!! ;)

Well I was in Jenks Oklahoma a while back going through antique stores and saw a case of knives. One in particular caught my eye because it resembled a randall. The owner said it was an early buck knife but the markings did not match. He said he would take $35.00 for it and I brought it home. Upon further examination it turns out it is a Ralph Bone model3 made in Lubbock Texas, probably in the early 70's. It is in decent shape and a nice feeling knife. I will have it with me at the Central Texas Knife show in August. Not for sale though it is a keeper.

Hey all,

A $200 Barry Dawson dagger at a gun show in 1994 for $45.00
A Pacific Cutlery Bushmaster for $35.00 at a gun show in 1994
A William McHenry tiger coral scaled damascus liner lock at Blade West last year for $1,000(easily worth $2,500).
An $800 Warren Osborne lockback for $175.00 from a friend, in February.
An engraved Harvey McBurnette drop point from a good friend last september for $500.00

and.......

Talking to Al Pendray at the Blade show last year, he had an all metal knife/letter opener (leftover piece of Wootz), and he let me have it for a pittance, that is one of my favorites, it is sooo cool, and a number of friends who have seen it try to buy it from me, and no way is it for sale.

Steven Garsson

Found a great handmade japanese sushi knife at St Vinnies for $3...then a few years later another one even better quality for $5.
Plus a few really good finds on fleabay.
But the best is a Trace Rinaldi Sharkstooth. Brand new for 70.00 on fleabay.
The seller didn't know what he had. had a lousy description title. The photo didn't show his makers mark well at all. The blade is coated. I knew it was a rinaldi just by the photo, Then I had to go looking for it on the net. I got it for my bid of $70. Trace just identified it as one of his first 30 knives. "Old school" he called it. is that cool or what!? :D

An 11+ inch bladed 3 bar composite damascus s-guard bowie by Ed Caffrey for 500.

Great find.

Pure luck. Saw the puppy on ebay one evening. Made a bid knowing I would not get it and went to bed. Immagine my surprise the next morning. Great knife made by a friend. Still feel a little guilt to this day since it seems like I stole this "honkin' bowie" as our friend Danbo would say.

Oh, I did get a great MS-test damascus knife for a song. Sorry, no name, no pic, and no price, but it was a real steal.

I picked up a real nice Bradshaw single blade stag trapper from a man at the central texas show a couple of years ago for $100.00. He knew he was giving me a deal/steal.

I picked up a Darrel Ralph DLC micro static maxx here on BFC for $300. The base price for the micro maxx is $575 and I believe the DLC coating adds another $100.

My good buddy Gene Osborn made the knife and back-pocket sheath, his buddy Allen Eldridge did the fine wire inlay.

Filework all over. Really a LOT of handwork.
